When debating on what I should create for my fourth marking period independent reading assignment and which book I should do it on, It Gets Worse by Shane Dawson seemed like the most obvious choice. Nothing really, in my opinion, fit the essence of this book more than simply writing about how amazing of a read it is. So that is exactly what I did. While reading other reviews of It Gets Worse, as well as Dawson’s first book titled I Hate Myselfie, I noticed that a great of deal of them commented solely on the humor found within the books. Of course, I saw this was necessary, as Dawson is mostly well-known throughout the YouTube community for his very abstract and distinctive humor. I myself focused on this mostly while writing my own review.
Every english class includes dreaded assigned reading, and students get used to the treacherous act of mandatory reading and analysis. However, there eventually comes a novel that pushes the limits of commitment and causes students to question why they took the advanced placement course, such as William Faulkner’s Intruder in the Dust. More often than not, a student’s motivation to read assigned reading is quite low, but Faulkner’s writing creates a whole new level of desperation to avoid the novel. The complicated sentences and common themes Faulkner uses create a difficult reading for anyone, especially unmotivated students.
Also, take this from a different person's perspective, not just mine.Think about the differences. What kind of stories would be told if this was from for example, an officer? Questioning and taking it a bit further and thinking outside the box makes a reader broaden their answers. Not just reading the book word for word, but asking questions makes it's so how we can look at this from another dimension. We are thankful for first-hand accounts because a textbook doesn't tell the whole story. Never had I thought reading a book can impact my view on life that leaves me
I think that what the author did to make this book interesting is base it on something
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, there were some aspects of it that I did not especially care for. The first of these aspects are the sections that are devoted to showing the reader what errors are commonly made in writing a piece of fiction. Although I do see the value in showing a student such things as the dangers of using excessive
The novel expresses a lot of humor in every way possible. Junior goes through a lot during the novel. At his reservation many people die because of alcohol and poverty. To get through the rough times his teenager humor helped carry us and him from the constant mourning. Not only does his funny comments help him express his humor, his hilarious cartoons do as well. All in all the humor in this book is what makes it a one of a kind book, that I believe every pre-teen and teenager should
Reading, whether it is a short story, newspaper, or novel, can affect the way the people view things. Reading has changed countless opinions and views of history and many other things around the world. Most people mature and develop better analytical skills from reading a wide variety of different literary pieces. “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, and “The Man He Killed” by Thomas Hardy are three pieces of literature that have significantly impacted me as a reader.
I was hooked from book one (The Absent Author), and spent hours every day paging through the books on my own time, which would in turn increase my vocabulary, enhance my analytical thinking, and improve my writing skills. In all honesty, those books granted me a love for reading that couldn’t be satiated. They opened up a door for me that would provide solace, comfort, and happiness in the coming years, and I am forever grateful for being granted a personal outlet. Books have become something no one can take away from me, and every person deserves to have something permanent; I’m just glad I found mine when I
In my opinion the book started getting better towards the end. I started the book
I remember dedicating my life to that project, and putting everything I had into that dialectical journal to ensure that I would get the best grade I had in me. It's a slippery slope to the bottom. It's work like that which causes little lights to burn out. I remember the disappointment I felt when I received the grade everyone received--collected. And so I began to hate reading. And as I began reading less and less fantasy and more and more non-fiction and speeches and research, I didn't have the time, nor the attitude to read for fun. I knew the ropes, I knew what to look for, but the things I was reading about held no value to me. I respected the authors, and I respected the extravagant diction and syntax they had used. But I felt nothing. And all I could think was, what is a piece of writing if it doesn't make you feel anything? How do you credit it with greatness if it doesn't inspire you to become better, or leave a lasting impression on you? And so if I seem bitter, please forgive me, for I know that this is my own fault. Reading is something which can liberate us. However in some rare cases, reading, and writing become the chains that bind us. The things we prioritize become the things that cause our fears. There comes a time when you realize all of the ideas you've learned, all the opinions you’ve discovered: your teachers’, your friends’, your peers’. And suddenly you realize you
This book was a harder read for sure, but that did not make it a boring read. Even though I had to read some parts over a few times for it to make sense didn’t make me dislike the book more. For being someone who does not enjoy reading I enjoyed this book it was planned out really well. I liked how Raine kept comparing himself to some of the people mentioned in the book. It made me think that he has killed someone and no one will never know,
On a cloudy, rainy day, the thing that always comes to mind is reading. Snuggling up with a hot cup of coffee, a blanket, and a book doesn't seem so bad on a gloomy day. While reading an action, romance, or dramatic novel, a person can become totally invested into it. This can lead to all types of emotions pouring out of any living soul. These emotions can range from jealousy to empathy to motivation. Although the books may be fiction or nonfiction, it still takes a toll on our total outcome of life. Each book shows different ways an individual views the world. All of these are examples of how it can change a person's opinion or outlook on their own personal life.
I remember at the beginning of the semester when Professor McEwen said, “Smaller book size does not mean easier to read”, in my scenario this turned out to be a trillion percent true. The two books that I read for my assignment was Thomas More Utopia, and The Prince by Niccolo’ Machiavelli. My books are polar opposites. My books are more opposite than acids and bases on a pH scale. On one hand I have rules you must follow to be a successful king; which has a pretty dark feel to it all throughout the book. On the other hand, I have Utopia which has a cheerful, and heavenly tone to it. Both of these books were interesting but, were both extremely challenging reads.
Written by one of the most well-known YouTube humorists, It Gets Worse: A Collection of Essays (2016) by Shane Dawson, chronicles the memoirs of a young adult YouTube session. In his book, Dawson reflects back on the times where he was a troubled child trying to find his place in the world. His book contains stories about shenanigans and sketchy situations that he can now look back at and laugh about. Though many of his stories often have a more serious undertone to them, Dawson manages to attain a different point of view that allows him to add his signature humorous element. This is, according to the online reviews, is what makes his book entertaining and heartwarming. While Dawson is known for having a self- defeating style of humor, many
But surprisingly almost half of the book was like a feel good story filled with hilarious quotes. The tone of the writing did get more serious as we got deeper into the story.
However, when I read this essay about how to mark a book I realize that it is a very interesting and a fun idea to just read something fun and try to use Alders methods to make it easier and fun for me. I agree that if I start reading something that I like and then write little notes about it, it will help me understand the story better and it will also help me to express myself. I am the type of person that when I read a story I tend to forget some parts, so, if I start underlining key words or circling phrases will help me remember the thoughts that the author had when he or she said something. With this in mind, I will start reading more now and use the methods the writer talks about in this
