The Impact Of Ocean Pollution

Better Essays

One of the most expansive and diverse places on the Earth is dying at the hands of humans. Fossil fuels, fertilizers, and energy plants are releasing chemicals into the environment harming oceans. The ocean's ecosystem can not handle the extensive impact of today’s agriculture. The acidity of the ocean continues to increase, making the ocean’s ecosystem unstable for marine life. In order to restore oceans back to their original state, the government needs to adopt policies to help oceans face today’s agriculture.
Today’s agriculture is producing high levels of nitric and sulfuric acid, which is being released into the air and ocean. The production of these acids comes from land based sources, such as farms, automobiles, and energy plants. The biggest culprit of ocean pollution is the burning of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels are burned, “sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are released into the atmosphere” (Images). Once these compounds are released into the air they mix with water, oxygen, and other substances to create high levels of nitric and sulfuric acid. These acids turn into acid rain that is carried by wind, spreading it across hundreds of miles (“Agriculture a Threat”). Once acid rain hits the Earth’s surface, it sinks into the soil, and enters runoff water. Runoff water and water systems enter oceans, introducing the acids to the marine environment. Fossil fuels are not the only cause of acidity in oceans. Farming causes chemicals like ammonia and
