What does it mean to be a good person? This question has been asked millions of times since the beginning of time, which is why it is one of the most discussed topics in everyday life. Individuals that delve into the art of philosophy find themselves seeking the truth about the morals and values one should have in life to be considered a good person. Morals are the fundamental standards of right and wrong in society such as the Ten Commandments in the Bible. Values, on the other hand, are an individual’s perspective on what is right or wrong. In the book Values in Thought and Action, David Lipe sheds light on the idea of moral value. He states that “if one were to follow all the rules and principles perfectly he would probably not be judged as a morally good person,” moreover “we desire that one possess such qualities as friendship, love, and loyalty” (Lipe 123). Being a good person is not merely knowing right from wrong but rather, it is having dignity, devotion, and sincerity in all that you do. Rudyard Kipling exemplified these traits best in the poem “If,” which is centered on the values one should have in order to be regarded as a moral individual. When attempting to make a definitive list of the values one must obtain to be considered moral, it is important to remember the universal virtues handed down through history that have influenced the characters of men today.
