The Importance Of Happiness In Literature

Humankind, regardless of geography, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, education or economic status all come to down to one thing within everyone, which is happiness. Through literature that authors provide insight, comfort, and oftentimes advice to help us cope with our humanity. In literature, it illustrates all the human conditions that we humans face. We are so fond of some literature because we can relate to the human condition even though we may not know it sometimes. Through a few literatures I am going to link the human condition, “Happiness”, and connect it to our society to see where that relativeness comes in.

She is in envy of her sister is because she compares herself to her. She’s looking at the positive of her sister and the negatives of herself. Maggie hasn’t accepted her scars that is why she is not happy with herself. Often times people today compare themselves to other people and they find it hard to accept themselves. Another thing it says “I did something I never had done before: hugged Maggie to me, then dragged her on into the room, snatched the quilts out of Miss Wangero’s hands and dumped them into Maggie’s lap.” (Walker L84) and then “Maggie smiled; maybe at the sunglasses. But a real smile, not scared.” (Alice Walker) Affection wasn’t apart of Maggie and her mom's relationship. No affection could lead Maggie to think that she’s not loved. How could she accept herself if no one else accepted her? That reassurance her mom gave her was a relief that she was loved and accepted. In this story Maggie learned to accept herself with the help of her mom, she then was able to smile. Acceptance is the key to happiness.
