The Importance Of Law In Civilization

Throughout civilization there has continuously been a debate of civilized against uncivilized, but through years of studying this historical debate, virtually all agree that law is part of civilized culture. The ancient civilizations followed law and law is still the foundation of society to present day. Incredibly, though, some men have the power to dodge laws. In many situations, due to various circumstances, the state itself allows law to be evaded if any person or group holds enough power. Socrates, the master philosopher, is not a man that had the wealth or power to evade the law, but the men who disliked his teachings had the power to break the law, falsely accusing Socrates of crimes. Accordingly, any man with enough money or power receives permission to disobey the laws of Ancient Greek society, and even modern-day society. Law is defined as, “The principles and regulations established in a community by some authority and applicable to its people, whether in the form of legislation or of custom and policies recognized and enforced by judicial decision.” An ancient instance of law would be The Code of Hammurabi, a list of laws and punishments. While these laws in this code appear quite severe, it illustrates the place of law in society, even for the ancient Babylonians. As people face imprisonment and death for their wrongdoings, the power of law holds a sacred place within society. Particular instances, however, people have the ability to evade their punishment,
