We all practice discretion many times during the day in our lives. A police officer's discretion is a definite judgement call in interpreting the severity of the crime committed. "Proper use of discretion is probably the most important measure of a police officer or department” (Kinsey, 2014). Sometimes the actions the officer takes may not please everyone at the scene of a crime, but based on the law, the officer's experience and training with a clear, sober, unbiased appraisal is what's needed to make appropriate assumption to the cause. Having good discretion from an officer is so important in the interest of the community in carrying out the best punishment for these criminals.

Police officers are constantly dealing with people that are often not at their best when speaking to the police, and because of this will tend to give these citizens a little slack. These officers are handling people under the influence of rage, frustration, depression, jealousy, drugs, alcohol, emotional or psychological impairment, pain, withdrawal, lack of sleep, pressure or any other emotion, illness or condition are not themselves and thus they will often be "difficult" people to deal with (Kinsey, 2014). Good officers accept these people and learn to deal with those complications. Discretion in law enforcement, and especially within policing, is critical to both the functioning of the police department and to the relationship with the public in which the police department serves (McCartney & Parent, 2015). Key to this argument, however, is that some in law enforcement view professionalism as somewhat judged on the amount of discretion that is awarded to an occupation, and it is in this respect that a shift toward more discretion will result in police services acting more professional.
