At any high school football game, football players take a knee on the field when either an opponent’s player or their own team player is injured. This shows respect; “a gesture of self-surrender before the greater reality of human suffering”. However, when it comes to an actual NFL football game, “taking the knee” has a whole different concept after former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick “took the knee” at a football game during the National Anthem as a form of protest against the racial injustice and police brutality. After the impression Kaepernick made, half has argued that this gesture is “unpatriotic and politics should be disregarded in sports” and the other half, including some other football teams, are with Kaepernick and agree with his protest of police violence against African Americans. Although it was and still now a strong movement, the reason behind it nowadays has become redundant and shouldn’t be as relevant as it is now. To start off, Colin Kaepernick started his movement last year around the months of August and September. It began with him being seen sitting down during the national anthem during preseason in August to him actually kneeling down in September; a start of a silent protest. Kaepernick then later gave an explanation to his actions via NFL website stating, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color” (SBNation).
