The Participation in organized sports has become very popular in America over the past 30 years. Many parents are worried that putting their children on a team too early could close them off to sports as a whole. When is the appropriate age for competing in organized sports and what are the consequences of starting too early or even too late? This paper will discuss whether children and preadolescents should participate in competitive sports.

It was not until the late 1900s that organized sports started to become popular for children younger than high school age. Until recently children in America have been grown up playing sports in a very informal setting. Kids would just play sports for pure enjoyment and without the many rules and regulations we find today. There was no practices or tryouts or any sort of parental involvement. Sports were just a way of life for many, a way to find out which kids were going to stand out as leaders among their peers and which showed greater athletic prowess. But for most it was how they nurtured a life-long love for sports and competing. So what has changed? In the past few decades the wave of organized sports has taken over the nation. Now young athletes have many more resources at their disposal than their parents or grandparents.
