Proverbs 5:23 says, “For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly” (NIV). This statement does not only seem to be the foundation of St. Bernard’s teachings, but it is also provides a glimpse to a life without Christian mysticism. St. Bernard of Clairvaux lived from 1090 - 1153 AD and lived as a Cistercian abbot, acting as the mouthpiece for Christian mysticism during the Middle Ages. Mysticism is defined, “The spiritual discipline that enables an individual to experience union with God or a divine principle” (Quinn). Throughout St. Bernard’s letters and teachings, he wanted the reader to grasp the meaning and necessary steps to have an established relationship with Christ. St. Bernard of Clairvaux was a mediator for Christian Mysticism because his teachings reflected mysticism’s values of discipline, obedience, and selflessness. St. Bernard stressed the importance of discipline, as it is not only beneficial for someone to strengthen their relationship with Christ, but it is necessary for someone to discipline themselves in order to draw closer to Christ. St. Bernard says in Some Letters of Saint Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, “Thus I have determined to follow him as master always and everywhere, but on the condition never to deviate from the authority of the Rule, which, as he himself is witness, I have sworn and determined to keep” (St. Bernard). In this excerpt of St. Bernard, he is illustrating that the person must refrain from things that are
In conclusion, Bernard is interested in pursuing his personal desires, instead of conforming to society because he doesn’t like the way society is and what it is restricting people from.
This quote talks about how Bernard is discussing with ford about if he can bring back the Savages, but not because Linda lived in London before but for experiments on John. I chose this quote because I wondered why Bernard would be so cruel to another person, and make someone else's life miserable just so he can benefit from it. I feel like he should understand how it feels to be mistreated and not want that to happen to anyone else. But in my opinion I think he is getting himself and John into a bad situation with the society (100)

Once again, in this quote, the theme of human importance and the need for individuality is expressed. Bernard recognizes himself as a separate individual. He does not want to be swept away to unconsciousness by the soma, but would rather stay aggravated in reality. Through Bernard, the author is explaining that it is important to be oneself even through trials, because no one else, however jolly, is completely content.
I would like to define the meaning of spiritual discipline is? According to Dallas Willard in his book title ?The Spirit of the Disciplines?, on page 151, he define spiritual disciplines as follow; in the embodied personality that is the carrier of our abilities (and disabilities!) a readiness and an ability to interact with God and our surroundings in a way not directly under our control; wanting to have our self in the condition of our body and mind to secure the Father in assistance to stand as firmly as Jesus did. The mark of a disciplined person is one that is able to do what needs to be

" A man should not be forced to do what he doesn't want to do. But since it's his take for being part of this religion, he must. However, I feel pity towards Bernard because in my view he doesn't want to be part of the service he doesn't feel
The saint I have chosen for Confirmation is Saint Catherine of Siena. Her feast day is April 29th. She is a patron saint of Italy, bodily ills, miscarriages, people judged for their piety, sexual temptation, sick people, nurses, and fire prevention. Saint Catherine of Siena even helped the poor and assisted the United States becoming peaceful. The reason I have chosen her is because when I’m older, I want to help people by becoming a nurse or something of that field, just like her.
When Bernard is exiled to Iceland he is unhappy and decides to go the reservation even when told he shouldn’t. When in London his popularity increases and takes advantage of his new status. He used his new status to get to women, but those women were promised that they would get to meet John through knowing Bernard. Also with being exiled Bernard becomes more independent and individualized. “And then he spends most of his time by himself—alone." There was horror in Fanny's voice.”(pg 35) This is the beginning of where Bernard’s defining feature is a downfall and a virtue. It defines his virtue because it makes an individual to be alone. It’s also a downfall because it makes him insecure and manipulative to John.
