The Importance Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald, in The Great Gatsby, creates this money crazy protagonist James Gatz who transcends himself into a made-up persona, James Gatsby, in attempt to climb his way up the social class ladder. The novel focuses on how accomplishing the American Dream actually determines success. Though as readers, we begin to learn that success comes into two forms Gatsby’s perception of success and success in wealth. In his life time Gatsby accomplishes this great amount success but we see that Gatsby measures his own successfulness by when he has won Daisy back. This “love” drives Gatsby into many obstacles that ultimately rob him of his sanity and wealth. No matter how much effort you put into something you’ll never get the payoff you deserve if your priorities aren’t pure. Gatsby is guilty of allowing his own perception of success to take away from his accomplishments.

The American Dream is defined as someone starting low on the economic or social level, and working hard towards prosperity and or wealth and fame. Born as James Gatz to poor farmers in North Dakota, he decided at an early age that he wanted more out of life than North
