The Importance Of The Freedom Of Religion

Religious freedom is a basic human right that gives our lives dignity and meaning. Religious freedom allows us all to think, act, and express what we deeply believe. “Religious freedom is our birthright as being a human begins” (Martin). It is recognized in both the Declaration of Independences and the Constitution of the United States of America. The 2017 edition of a First Liberty report called “Unquestionable” shows increasing discrimination in American’s First Amendment rights spanning the past five years. The number of documented incidents of religious discrimination grew 15 percent in 2016 compared with 2015. The Number of incidents increased by 133 percent, from 600 to more than 1, 400, between 2011 and 2016 (Lewis). At its most basic, religious freedom means the right to choose, change, declare, and act upon your faith. It includes freedom to worship but is much more than that. It’s the right to “exercise” or live your religion without interference from government or others, except when necessary to protect health and safety. It includes the right of like-minded individuals to form religious organizations that govern their own affairs. So, Does the First Amendment guarantee our freedom of religion? In all reality; no, what happened to our First Amendment right of Freedom of Religion and Expression?
