“Halloween is a liberal holiday because we’re teaching our children to beg for something for free...we’re teaching kids to knock on other people doors and ask for handouts.” Sean Hannity from Fox News said in October of 2007. Fox News has been the mainstream, go-to news station for years. The popular news station gained the trust of the public by its credibility and ability to spread news fast and efficiently. Now, in the twenty first century, people are questioning the credibility of Fox News and if they are using personal biases to present stories and segments. Fox News presents information of conservative views, good ol’ fashion American Traditions, and creating heroic personas of American figures through glory bias.
Conservative views can be visible on all platforms of Fox News media. Topics that were under the ‘Trending in opinions’ tab on FoxNews.com, as of January 2, 2015 at 1:34p.m, were the following “Obamas budget: Taxing Grandma to fund the AFL-CIO, Free community college? For Obama’s plan to succeed business must be part of the equation, Obamas housing recovery plan could bring another great recession, Mitt Romney was right: To win in 2016, here’s what republicans must do now” All of the ‘trending opinions’ on fox news are biased towards glorifying the republican; a more conservative party, and making the democratic party out as fools. There has and will always be a divide on conservative versus liberal ideologies, there is nothing we can change about that.
A liberal is a person that believes that the government should provide equality for all, while a conservative is a person that believes in limited government and that the government should provide the necessary freedom for people to pursue their own goals. Over time, it has been argued, mostly by conservatives, that there is a liberal bias in the media. Liberals have combated this idea with the belief that conservative media is devoted to making efforts to invoke fear and division in the general public. Though liberals make a fine counter-argument, it is easier to observe that the media is liberal-biased. The liberal versus conservative debate can be compared to facts versus values. Another reason for bias within the media is that a significant percentage of minorities, or smaller groups within the population that are often thought to be poorer, politically identify themselves as liberals. To make these minorities feel like the government is on their side as well as everyone else’s, the media must accommodate the needs of these minorities. Because of this, the media becomes liberal-biased.
FOX NEWS’s credibility has even hit a “record low”. In a public policy poll in 2013 it states,”Fox News has hit a record low in the four years that we’ve been doing this poll. 41%of voters trust it to the 46% who do not. To put those numbers into some perspective the first we did this poll, in 2010, 49% of voters trusted it to 37% who did not”. FOX NEWS’s use of “strong-loaded” words and publishing of misleading reports, people tend to view them as conservative.
Even only listening to Fox, Herman Cane, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity I would be getting plenty of political coverage of liberals. Fox News has many liberal commentators who are on the “conservative” network and regularly state the left-wing point of view. Rush and Sean, for instance, inform their listeners of liberal views perfectly plain if one is listening. Fox News itself has hosted many liberals Tamara Holder, ( a
Liberals and conservatives support the media especially in the news. Audiences usually lean towards a news station that has viewers of the same political standpoint. For instance, a large percentage of conservative viewers watch mainly Fox news. Conservatives typically cluster around one news source. In this case, it is Fox News. Opposed to conservatives who are weary of different sources, liberals can trust a variety of different types of media such as MSNBC, ABC, and CBS. But it’s not just news stations. Newspapers also lean towards a political
The newspaper reported that “an implicit defense of Mr. Trump was also a consistent theme” during the 18 hours Times reporters watched Fox News. After President Trump’s push to repeal the Affordable Care Act did not get enough votes in Congress, Fox host and analysists said to not blame him, the newspaper said.
A Washington Times story last week screamed, “Americans increasingly seeking media outlets that confirm pre-existing partisan views.” The Public Policy Polling people recently found Republicans only trust Fox News while Democrats trust any news other than
In the article “GOP-Fox Circus Act”, Reed Richardson argues that although both the GOP and Fox have conservative political values, they are ultimately harmful to each other’s agendas because of their differing political goals. Both organizations are lacking popularity in recent years so they are struggling to find new ways to gain an audience. The GOP wants to find a way to get their ideas to a wide variety of people, whereas Fox is promoting more liberal views to increase the ratings of their programs. On one hand, the GOP’s reputation is hurt by the inaccuracy of Fox’s reporting. On the other hand, Fox is tied down by the conservative views of the GOP, thus restraining Fox from gaining a larger audience. Journalist Reed Richardson wrote this article for The National, a liberal newspaper, in 2013, so the events and issues that he is speaking of are still relevant to this day. Due to the differences of political views between the author and the subject matter, there is plenty of room for biased statements and opinions. Does Richardson provide enough evidence of the harmful effects of the Fox and GOP relationship? Richardson clearly and meticulously establishes the problems that both organizations face in the pursuit of their political goals with the use of statistics, reliable sources, and thorough evaluation of events; however Richardson constantly provides the reader with a biased argument when discussing the current state of Fox.
In an article titled “The Fox News Effect: Media Bias and Voting,” it is addressed that towns and regions that air Fox News do indeed have an impact in elections, and that the impact is in favor of the Republican party. “We find a significant effect of the introduction of Fox News on the vote share in Presidential elections between 1996 and 2000. Republicans gain 0.4 to 0.7 percentage points in the towns which broadcast Fox News. The results are robust to town-level controls, district and county fixed effects, and alternative specifications. We also find a significant effect of Fox News on Senate vote share and on voter turnout. Our estimates imply that Fox News convinced 3 to 8 percent of its viewers to vote Republican.” (DellaVigna &
MSNBC’s audience are liberals and democrats who care greatly about saving the environment from global warming. Many of the viewers appear to be both in the middle and left wing who are everyday people who were raised in a more progressive era. Meanwhile, viewers of Fox News are diehard conservatives who believe wholeheartedly that climate change is a tactic orchestrated by liberals to take away their political powers. In a sense, it appears as though Fox News appeals to older and predominantly white, rich males who grew up before the progressive era. Fox News expressed their personal testimony more openly, which allows them to deflect the attention of the audience away from the issue, while MSNBC sticks to the topic at hand and supplies a plethora of statistics for their audience. Fox News logos and pathos appeal is more effect than MSNBC because they make statements that disturb viewers peace of minds. However, MSNBC is clearly more effective in winning over their audience due to the highly educated commentators they use to make their point across. It is apparent after the examination of these four transcripts that broadcast networks apply their own bias opinions into a form of current events that is supposed to remain unbiased and
Let’s see, FOX philosophy; Republican party is the only true rulers of this nation. Democrats are socialists. Homosexuality is bad. Organized religion is good, except when the pope speaks out. Gretchen Carlson is rebellious and does not follow the directions of the master of FOX. Black people and other minority groups should not own weapons while (angry) white people can. A black president is a error in history and will not be spoken off again.
The clip from SNL illustrates President Obama in a very different light. In this video, actors from SNL perform a skit showing Obama going on several TV interviews to promote his health care plan to “as wide an audience as possible.” He says, “I don’t want to shut anyone out of this debate,” and goes on various interviews, many of which are completely ridiculous. However, when asked, “How about Fox News?” he immediately replies,
Attack journalism, along with other methods, is used in order to try and discredit conservatives. The mass media chooses people they favor and people they do not favor. The people who they oppose deal with tremendous amounts of scrutiny. Bias in the media exists and it influences Americans greatly. The media uses headlines, omission, and word choice to mislead and influence the American viewers. Painting conservatives in a bad light effects how the public sees them, leading to a greater distrust or dislike of a certain person or people. Neutral standpoints do not exist in the mass media and it has been proven multiple times by the way the media targets
Often media broadcasters tend to lean to this side, therefore giving them the image of being liberally bias. Chris Mathews and Keith Oberman from MSNBC are two examples of broadcasters that have been accused of delivering their news with a liberal twist to it. Journalists tend to vote on the liberal side of situations, but still say that while they are on the job they only tell the news in the fairest way and the way that will be least offensive as well as respectful to who it will be presented. In many cases however, this report can come out with an oddly left sided tone (thatliberalmedia.com). Since 1991 when Katie Couric became co-host of NBC’s Today Show, she has used her powerful spot in the media to praise significant liberal figures such as Hillary Clinton and Jimmy Carter. At the same time however, Couric has never been shy about complaining about “right winged conservatives”
One of the articles in the “further research” that caught my attention was Fourteen Propaganda Techniques Fox "News" Uses to Brainwash Americans. The article mentions 14 techniques Fox news network uses to deliver false claims to viewers. 4 of those techniques I frequently see in various news outlets. These techniques are: Panic Mongering, Bullying, Saturation and Guilty by Association. When we enter in state of panic, we don’t think rationally.
• E.g. Fox news channel headed by Republican supporters often portray Democrats in a negative light. Fox’s anchorman compared the logo of the recent nuclear technology forums, approved by President Obama, with the Muslim crescent, accusing Obama of having Muslim inclinations. The logo, in fact, was a representation of the scientific atom and had nothing to do with religion whatsoever.
