The former president of the United States, Barak Obama and his administration went through one of the biggest environmental controversies. The issue was related to the construction of oil pipeline called the keystone XL pipeline. The purpose of this project is to transport thousands of tons of crude oil a day from Canada to the United States. The United States is an industrialized country that consumes more than 15 million barrels of oil every day. More than half of this oil is imported from foreign countries including Venezuela and Saudi Arabia (Lee, 2015). It is also used to make some chemical products, such as detergents and paints. Every country in the world uses oil, however, many countries do not produce it. The top Countries that produce a large quantity of oil in the world include China, Saudi Arabia, United Stated, and Russia, and the top countries that consume tons of oil every day include China, Russia, United States, Japan, and Germany. Some studies showed that by 2039, the world might face oil crisis due to the current rate of oil consumption (Oilprice, 2009). Generally speaking, oil plays an important role in the functioning of many things, but keystone oil pipeline particularly can be harmful for the population. With this project, 830,000 barrels of crude oil will be transported every day from Canada to the United States, which is about 1,664 miles (Eilperin, 2014). Nebraska is one of the States the pipeline would pass through. However, Ogallala aquifer crosses many States including Nebraska. Ogallala aquifer is one of the largest aquifers in the world. It provides drinking water to more than 2.3 million people in the United States. Plus, about 30 percent of the water that is used to irrigate land come from aquifer. Therefore, basically, Keystone oil pipeline could threaten the quality of the water, especially when there is an oil leak.
