“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.” In this quote, Thomas Jefferson talks about how the most important thing in society is the care of individuals. He says that a government should make an effort to look after their citizens and strive to give them happiness, not ruin. In the short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger,” if a “criminal” is on trial, the king would have them stand in an arena and choose between two identical doors to open. Behind one door, there stands a beautiful maiden whom he could marry, whereas behind the second, there would be a hungry tiger waiting to maul and devour him. According to the king, fate would decide if you were innocent or guilty. The author briefly talks about the issue of dictatorships and how the king has instituted a system in which fate would …show more content…
The type of society presented in the story is quite different. In the third paragraph, Stockton writes, “The arena of the king was built, not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and develop the mental energies of the people.” In this excerpt, the author uses a sarcastic tone to describe this system as having ‘purposes far better’ than one where criminals would receive a fair trial. The story also states, “.. the accused person was instantly punished if he found himself guilty, and, if innocent, he was rewarded on the spot, whether he liked it or not. There was no escape from the judgements of the king’s arena.” This method of executing justice is unrealistic and unpractical, but it’s the way things were and no one asked
For example, although the gladiator fights were entertainment for some, the document completely ignores the perspective of the gladiator. Gladiators were often criminals or Prisoners of War, that fought as punishment. Others were poor plebeians that had no other source of income. While it was entertainment for most people, fighting was torchure for the gladiators because they had to kill or be killed. The recounts of the gladiator fights, were very biased towards the patricians because the author, Martial, came from a wealthy family and became well known for his writing. Evidently, the passage is a very subjective account of gladiator
Looking back into the 1800s, those accused of a crime did not receive the treatment they would nowadays due to the lack of freedoms they had. In Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, the characters Victor Frankenstein and Justine Moritz were both unjustly accused, tried, and Justine was executed; similarly, a significant amount of people experienced the same unfair treatment in the 1800s (Shelly).
The novel, Tears of a Tiger, by Sharon M. Draper addresses the aftermath and impact that a fatal drunk driving accident has on the lives of the young teenagers involved. The story focuses on the protagonist, Andy Jackson, the drunk driver in a car with his 3 other friends who get into a fatal crash which ends up killing his best friend, Robert Washington. While everyone else slowly got over Robbie’s death, Andy changed severely, and fell into a pit of depression and guilt which no one could pull him out of. The author’s purpose is inform teenagers of the dangers of drunk driving and it’s impact on the ones involved, so that teenagers learn from the mistakes and lessons of these characters. Tears of a Tiger can also compare to the movie,
In “Get it Right: Privatize Executions” Arthur Miller compares executions to a sports event in a rather mocking tone. I believe that the shocking and somewhat sarcastic statements made about seat prices and sport rituals purpose is to convict the readers and make us think. Would people truly want to gather in an arena or in their homes with popcorn in hand to watch an execution? Could we really be as barbaric as the gladiators? I did some research on this and the unfortunate answer is yes. What I find perplexing is not that people think murders should be executed, but that so many relatives as well as people unaffected by the criminal, would actually want to spectate the
The authors of Crime and Punishment in the Elizabethan Era conclude that due to Elizabeth’s strict convictions, England became a safer society. Even for committing minor crimes, people would be “arrested and punished quickly” (1). Before Elizabeth’s reign, punishments for committing crimes were uncommon, resulting in an unorganized society. Having a careless, free society leads to outbursts and revolts which could eventually lead to bigger disputes, like a civil war. Elizabeth worked to prevent this by enforcing acts of public humiliation and larger punishments. These tough punishments lead people to not want to break the law or commit any crimes whatsoever. Although Elizabeth was strict and penalized citizens for small crimes, her actions led to maintaining peace and balance throughout England. The orderly society that she built could’ve been disastrous if it weren’t for the austere precautions she took to enhance England. The actions Queen Elizabeth I took towards crime and punishment helped transform England into a more stable

“And despite scientific efforts to implement capital punishment in a "humane" fashion, time and again executions have resulted in degrading spectacles, including the botched lethal injection in April 2014 that took more than 40 minutes to kill Oklahoma inmate Clayton Derrell Lockett and prompted Glossip v. Gross” (Heyns and Mendez). Capital punishment is an inhumane and outdated way for punishing criminals. The use of capital punishment is hundreds of years old in America. It is used as a punishment for criminals who have committed a violent crime in which they physically harm others. The point of the death penalty is to show that these kinds of crimes are not tolerated, and to deter criminals from committing these kinds of crimes. Unfortunately
My blood boiled. My face was a deep scarlet resembling fiery, bright lava. I looked at my sister. Her smug face made the bomb inside of me tick faster. Before I knew it, I felt a stinging impact; my hand leaving a distinctive red mark across her cheek. Not long after, I felt the same pain my sister had. I stared at my mother in shock. To this day, I still reflect over the irony of that one moment. My mom attempted to teach me not to hit my sister by striking me. However, this contradictious lesson was not practical. It did not fix my behavior; the only change was that I questioned my punishment. This applies to the broken system we have here in America. The death penalty is not only paradoxical, but it is a costly process that does succeed in deterring crimes. Capital punishment is not beneficial to our society.
Not only is capital punishment a conflict in today’s society, but it is considered a cruel and uncommon punishment by the law. In
Tears of a tiger is a young adult novel about the struggles of not only being a BLACK teen in a world where WHITE is acceptable, but also the struggles of “teenagehood” and feeling like no one truly understands. The protagonist Andrew (Andy) Jackson goes through a devastating lost at the age of 17, and constantly blames himself. I wish he could have truly found someone to talk/ work through his issues with. He reminds me of myself in a way. I have always grown up in a predominantly white area, and as a young kid it never affected me, or so I thought. I never realized how important it was to have people to relate to that look like you. Going from North Carolina, to Lorain, Ohio, to Cleveland, Ohio, to finally Brunswick, Ohio all in the span of about 7 years, I now struggle with my inner feelings about my skin color and culture.
Many people mistake justice as retribution or revenge. Seeking justice has come to mean taking matters to court and “getting even” for what the individual took or damaged. However, the true motivation for justice is to reveal the truth and reality of expressing a fair representation of fact respecting merit or demerit. In other words: even-handed treatment. The Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” is a genuine representation of justice, which contrasts with the epic of “Grendel”, in which there is a lack of consideration to the innocent monster.
On January 27, an article was published, “Why Chinese Mothers are Superior” by the Wall Street Journal. It brought attention and promotes extreme controversy. Chua sparked debates over the differences in parenting styles of American and Chinese heritages. “Chinese Mothers” used in a broad statement and “Western Mothers” used for every other party. Americans began to raise questions. Chua’s article referring to herself as a Tiger mother stands to have both negative comments and some positive.
All over the world Feminism is a current topic of concern and there are very few advocates who are currently fighting for gender equality. In the media men and women are attempting to use their voices to fight for equal rights and get the message across to all generations. In this paper, I will be analyzing the movie Beauty and the Beast (2017) by drawing upon the feminist theory, which will demonstrate how the main female character, Belle challenges the modern-day system of inequality and the socially constructed gender roles. I will do so by examining why Emma Watson was chosen as the leading actress, how Belle is different than the other women in her town, the modifications from the original movie, and how Belle ultimately gets to decide her destiny. I will also consider why some people may view the film as anti-feminist, which will allow for me to understand a different perspective. It is my thesis that socially constructed gender identities are negatively presented in popular culture, however actors and actresses are attempting to use their influence to make an impact and move towards equality.
The term epiphany is pretty common in literary terms, and most often means a moment of realization or self discovery. In a story, it’s when a character discovers an awareness or knowledge that really changes their views on life. They start to “see a new light” as some would say. In the story of “The Lady with the Dog,” there are four parts, and each of the four parts of the story involves an epiphany of some sort, one way or another.
Despite all the pros and cons of capital punishment, society must think about what is truly correct and most practical for our world. Capital punishment is not functional in today’s legal system. There are countless amounts of evidence that proves these legal killings to be ineffective. We, as Americans, must correct this irrational practice before it does anymore permanent damage.
