“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.” In this quote, Thomas Jefferson talks about how the most important thing in society is the care of individuals. He says that a government should make an effort to look after their citizens and strive to give them happiness, not ruin. In the short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger,” if a “criminal” is on trial, the king would have them stand in an arena and choose between two identical doors to open. Behind one door, there stands a beautiful maiden whom he could marry, whereas behind the second, there would be a hungry tiger waiting to maul and devour him. According to the king, fate would decide if you were innocent or guilty. The type of society presented in the story is quite different. In the third paragraph, Stockton writes, “The arena of the king was built, not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and develop the mental energies of the people.” In this excerpt, the author uses a sarcastic tone to describe this system as having ‘purposes far better’ than one where criminals would receive a fair trial. The story also states, “.. the accused person was instantly punished if he found himself guilty, and, if innocent, he was rewarded on the spot, whether he liked it or not. There was no escape from the judgements of the king’s arena.” This method of executing justice is unrealistic and unpractical, but it’s the way things were and no one asked
