The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion or impeding the free exercise of religion. Adopted on 15 December 1791, it is one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

The constitution of the United States of America is the founding document on which the government of America is built. It currently has twenty-seven amendments. It lines out the specific government practices as well as the system of check and balances. It was first drafted July, 1787 after the first form of government, the articles of confederation, had proven very inefficient to a point where it became almost redundant to have them in place. After a large amount of debate the acting continental congress decide to completely revise the current system. The constitution was efficient and fair and it kept the parts of government in place while not giving too much power to one or more branches.

The American flag is a representation for the strength and power of this country and all that it has gone through. With that being said, not everyone sees the American flag in this way. Desecration is the act of burning something, in this case it is burning the flag that symbolizes the freedom of this great nation. It is obvious to most that this act should be illegal, seeing as there is no reason good enough to hurt the country in this way; however, some Americans believe otherwise.

However, in recent dialogues, the controversial topic of flag desecration has resurfaced. According to Merriam-Webster, desecration, by definition, means, “to treat a sacred place or sacred object shamefully or with great disrespect,” such as burning or vandalizing. Because the American flag is seen as such an iconic symbol of American history, opinions on the punishment, or lack thereof, of those participating in flag desecration differ greatly. Although the disrespect of one of the most meaningful objects of the nation is clearly not an act held in high regard, it is protected by the first amendment of the Constitution and, therefore, does not require a punishment for exercising a right given to Americans by the founders of the nation.

America is known for freedom, and people from all over the world make their way to the United States to find their American dream, but should the freedoms presented in the first amendment include the right to burn the American flag? The American flag is much more than a flag; it is a symbol of strength and the lives lost to get America to where it is today. Burning the flag should be excepted from the freedom of speech protections because it is not only disrespectful to those who have served, but it also causes violence when burned in public places.

A "symbol of our country" means nothing. As someone who took an oath to defend our country (you know the oath) and protect the US constitution of the USA, I see a lot of rhetoric similar to yours used to criminalize flag burning and it is completely unfounded. Burning the US flag is a 1st amendment right of any citizen that feels distressed with where our country and our government is headed. The American flag is not only a symbol of freedom, but it is also a symbol of corruption, slavery hypocrisy and tyranny. What it boils down to are the actions of the people of this country and our leaders; that's what makes this country great! It is definitely not a piece of fabric. The most important amendment is the last part of the eighth amendment. Even though we are known as the “Melting Pot,” Article II Section I of the Constitution a right that should be given to all of America’s citizens.

The Flag is an honored and venerated symbol of a country. Epic wars were fought for this piece of fabric, such as the American Civil War, or World War Two. However, some people disrespect this, and “Take it too far” such as, physically destroying the flag, or desecrating the flag by burning it down into a pulp. This is currently illegal in several major countries. I believe that desecration of the flag is not permissible, and should stay illegal in the United States.
