In the story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson she demonstrates a variety of gothic elements in her text. Gothic Literature explores a combination of horror and romance throughout the stories. Jackson creates a world where there is a ritual violence unquestioned by the members of the community. They meet on a certain day and draw a name of who “wins” the lottery. The result of being chosen means that person is stoned by the community. Shirley Jackson uses Gothic literature in her story by demonstrating evilness, characterization and damsel in distress.
Shirley Jackson uses Evilness in her story to emphasize the gothic elements. The lottery has been going on for generations. All 300 people in the village come and participate in this event. Each member of the village must bring a stone and pile it up in the middle of the square. The original box was lost but they use a black box now to draw out who wins the event. Death is still delivered by stoning. The villagers are more than willing to kill members of their own community when it comes to the lottery. Old Man Warner has participated in the lottery for seventy - seven years. He believes that the tradition of the lottery should continue, that it has been going on for so long that it shouldn’t end now. The whole purpose behind the lottery is that it is helping their crops. Old Man Warner states about the young people thinking about giving up the lottery: “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon. First thing you know, we’d all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns.” (170-171). This shows that he believes that if the lottery ends it would result in failed crops and chaos. According to the older generation, the lottery is almost making the village more civilized and imposing order.
