Introduction:

There are many social movements that happen changed the society. For example, feminist movement, civil rights movement, Arab spring movement, children’s rights movement, ect. Civil rights movement is one of an important movement that change society and the ideas that were related to slaves, black, and African American people.

Before the United State becomes a country, people in thirteen colonies began fighting for their civil rights. So the journey of finding equality starts before long time, not like the idea that all people but it in their minds that it starts in the US (Marsh, 2004).

What were the main causes that led to this change?

This paper tries to focus on the cause behind the civil rights movement. Focusing on the goals of the movement. Finally, answering whither this movement has achieved its goals or not.

Cause:

There are many things that cause this type of movement. However, the main cause is the discrimination and bad treatment of African American people. There are many stories that happen are the best example of discrimination and bad treatment. One of these examples is the story of Emmett Till. On Aug. 28, 1955, a 14-year-old named Emmett Till was kidnapped, tortured and murdered for whistling at a white woman in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. His death helped spark the civil rights movement and frame the ongoing debate over racism in America (Ollhoff, 2011). Another example is the story of Rosa Parks. On December 1955, a 42-year-old African American woman called Rosa Parks. While she was sitting in the middle of the bus a white man ask her to move because this set is only for white and the last 4 sets for black but she refused. The best example for this is Martin Luther King. By his speech “I Have a Dream” he raise many peoples’ awareness when he speak about the problem. He also mobilizes followers (Karson, 2005).

Have the goals of the civil rights movement have been achieved?

After 50 years, some people think that the goals of the civil rights movement achieved and some thinks that it did not. CBC new did a survey and asked white and black people some questions about race and the civil rights movement (Dutton, 2015).

The first question was how many goals of Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement has been achieved?

27% of black people in American think that all of the goals have been achieved. 67% of them think that only some of the goals have been achieved. However, only 5% of them think that none of the goals have been achieved.

In other side, 45% of white American think that all of the goals have been achieved. 49% of them think that only some of the goals have been achieved. Only 1% of them think that none of the goals have been achieved.
