In The Martian (Ridley Scott, 2015), the plot’s predictability leaves the theme of patriotism and the difficulties of war feeling inauthentic. Scott once again uses the same exaggeration of American patriotism to advance a film’s plot like he did in Black Hawk Down (Ridley Scott, 2001), only this time Scott does it in the most unrealistic way imaginable. While it is reasonable for a leadership figure to receive backlash for leaving an American without a proper burial, the retaliation from the American public alone was apparently enough for NASA’s director Terry Sanders (Jeff Daniels) to spend billions to salvage the life of a single astronaut. When Mark Watney (Matt Damon) was finally rescued, the scene transitioned to Times Square, where red white and blue confetti magically falls from the sky and everyone was seen waving American flags in excitement.

Oliver Sacks is a very famous doctor of neurology as well as a writer. He spent most of his adult life treating patients. Oliver Sacks mostly concentrated on disorders of the brain and nervous system. In a lot of the cases that Sacks dealt with, there was nothing he was able to do to heal the patients. That’s where he wanted to find ways to help these patients to the best of his and medical ability out there. Throughout his cases he studied he came across patients who had different
On a dark winter night, a UFO landed on Earth. The UFO was filled with Martians. During the night, the Martians made their way to the White House. The Martians snuck into the White House and implanted a device in the President to allow them to control him with the sound of a whistle. When the President woke up the next morning, he suddenly heard a whistle and lost complete control. The Martians were able to make the President launch rockets, launch attacks on other countries, and to spread false information to the citizens. When the President regained control, he was confused by what had happened and why or how he completed these tasks. Every morning the President would get up and the Martians would take control of him again. Everyday they
In The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury there are many differences between humans and martians. One of the biggest ones, aside from the obvious being from different planets, physical appearance, and telepathy is that the humans want everything to do with the martians while the martians want nothing to do with the humans. This is shown by the humans knocking on doors constantly and even just walking into a martians house in “The Earth Men” and by the martians ignoring or even killing the humans before they even interact with them much.
The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, is a science-fiction book and was written in 1946. This major work by Bradbury is a collection of short stories relating to Mars or Martians. Bradbury had a clear vision of the Mars in which these stories are set. His vision was one of a fantasy world from the Martians point of view. In this work, the humans from Earth are the aliens from outer space. Bradbury has won many awards including the O. Henry Memorial Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, the Aviation-Space Writers Association Award, the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, and the Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America. Bradbury supported his awards
The author’s purpose is why the author wrote what he did. Typically, the intent of the author is to persuade, inform, or entertain. In War of the Worlds, the author’s goal didn’t seem to be making the reader do or believe something. Similarly, the author didn’t seem to be trying to give facts about anything, especially since Martians haven’t walked this Earth. So, that leaves entertaining - giving amusement. This novel has many components that would be considered enjoyable. For example, the entire concept of Martians coming to Earth is revolutionary. Also, the creatures that are the Martians may appeal to anyones imagination - “A big greyish rounded bulk, the size, perhaps, of a bear, was rising slowly and painfully out out of the cylinder.
The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, was a strange conglomeration of stories that I had a hard time following until I examined its themes a little more closely. Initially, I was excited to read another Ray Bradbury book. His novel, Fahrenheit 451, was something I first read when I was younger, and have come to love. This makes my initial experience reading The Martian Chronicles even more disappointing. The structure of the novel, told through little vignettes of different characters and time and plot, felt confusing and better suited as stand-alone short stories.
I created this piece to further elaborate on the book’s main premise of the lack of support for our space program in our current age. Before I touch on that we have to touch on our origins. We as a race have lived as pioneers exploring the earth and colonizing any new place we could find. It all started in the fertile crest in the middle east. They ventured forth and spread across the earth. Then came the period of stagnation where no exploration was happening and the space race started. We went back to our roots as pioneers exploring beyond the bounds of our small blue planet. America as a whole was the economic powerhouse of the age and the space race caused our education standards to be raised as a whole leading to a greater nation. However,
1. My initial response to this story is that I'm intrigued. The story had this way of almost cloaking what was really happening. It made each death or event seem like it was a dream and the way everything was described it hooked you into the story.
Are Aliens on Mars? Yes, there are some tall and minor Aliens . They have sharp teeth. The red rain that scientists think that Aliens were landing. The on Mars have Flying saucers to get around. Little houses to live in. There face was indented into stone or clay. The Aliens eat animals that have rugged skin with bumps on it. The animals are big and small. they look like they are saber tooth tigers.
The year is 2075. A superior alien race called Crustinians have enslaved humanity to feed their ever-growing labor demands. They have prisoned every alive human into sectors based on their profession. I am in Sector – 13 since I am an optometrist. As a young man, I didn’t like the outdoors – hated everything from amusement parks to zoos. Yet, today, 10th April 2075, is the day I break out of captivity to watch for the very last time, the Sun dip in the sea from the Olympus Beach. It is fascinating what 15 years of imprisonment can do to you.
Most people feel scared or worried that something bad might happen while they are left home alone, well, NASA astronaut Mark Watney went through something similar to that. However, he wasn’t alone in a house, he was completely alone, on an entire planet, for a year and a half. The Martian by Andy Weir features a sole astronaut, Mark Watney, alone on Mars. Accidentally left behind by his crew, this brave botanist must fight to the end in order to survive. Though he is isolated, this dynamic space pirate becomes extremely resourceful with his methods of staying alive. Mark Watney changes and develops a new respect for life, accepts his fate and becomes witty and humorous.
‘Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus’, it was a typical joke in society to metaphor the disparity of sexes. Male is said to be straightforward and rational while female is ambiguity and emotional, these differences are shown in how they communicate and express themselves with the tool, language. Language use is particularly referring to the word choices, intonation and politeness in their speech in varies relationships, ranging from close friends to respectful ones to strangers. To explain the differences in language use, some suggested that it is an innate distinction between sexes biologically as men are usually left-head thinkers (more logical and objective) and women are used to be right-head thinkers (good at creativity, subjective).
