In "The Masque Of The Red Death", Edgar Allan Poe uses words and phrases to create an effect. He uses bold and dark words to help his readers be able to picture a very good image of the story and the mood that he wants to set. In the story “The Masque of the Red Death”, Poe expresses the theme that death is inescapable or inevitable. He expresses this theme through rhetorical devices such as symbolism and allegory. For example, Prince Prospero’s chambers were allegorical because of the rooms’ arrangement which was from east to west. The east represents the beginning of life, while the west represents the end of life. The Darkroom, which was at the end of the hall, symbolized death. It was the room that the guests didn’t want to go in and eventually was the place that they were killed by the Black Death. Another example of symbolism is the clock which as a symbol of the time-lapse of life as a human being. It was in this apartment, also, that there stood against the western wall a gigantic clock of ebony...and when the minute-hand made the circuit of the face, and the hour was to be stricken, there came from the brazen lungs of the clock a sound which was clear and loud and deep and exceedingly musical, but of so peculiar a note and emphasis that, at each lapse of an hour the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause, momentarily (Poe 374). This sentence expresses how compelling the clock is and how it attracts the attention of the masqueraders. The author also uses imagery to build suspense upon the reader. An example would be how the author describes the Red Death. His vesture was dabbled in blood-and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror (Poe 378). This describes the dreadful

Edgar Allen Poe's “The Masque of the Red Death” is an extravagant allegory of the futility of trying to escape death. In the story, a prince named Prospero tries to avoid the Red Death through isolation and seclusion. He hides behind the impenetrable walls of his castle and turns his back on the rest of the world. But no walls can stop death because it is unavoidable and inevitable. Through the use of character, setting, point of view, and symbol, Poe reveals the theme that no one, regardless of status, wealth or power can stay the passing of time and the inevitable conclusion of life itself, death.
“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are best shadowly and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?” (Poe). There is no such thing as having the ability to predict or tame the wrath of death, for all we can do is learn to accept it. In the story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, the main character, Prospero, shows through his arrogant actions that death will forever overpower the human instinct to stay alive. Poe uses symbolism to convey the battle between man and nature through the idea of the masquerade that serves as a fortress against the wrath of the disease, an excuse to disguise the true colors of man, and the honest truth that man will never become immortal.

“The Masque of the Red Death” has a symbolic expression to the story. It featured a set of familiar symbols whose meanings combined to send a message. “ ‘The Masque of the Red Death’ is a vanits tale, a memento mori. More specifically, it is about the failure of art to stave off death” (Dudley). Dudley’s use of the word ‘art’ somewhat changes the meaning of the quote, but the overall idea behind remains the same; it is impossible to escape death. Despite Prince Prospero’s astounding attempts to hide away and live forever, The Red Death still found it’s way to them in the form of the mummer. Everyone has had a time in their life when they wanted to live forever, but soon after coming to the reality that that dream would be impossible to achieve which is what this short story is showing an example of.
When it comes to reading literature the most challenging yet important task is to understand the purpose of the author's writing. In Romantic era literature understanding the emotions and thoughts that are created in the reader's mind are essential to gaining a clear message that the writer is trying to send. In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Masque of the Red Death” the narrator immediately introduces the “Red Death”; a disease that has been spreading throughout Prince Prospero’s country; killing his people within half an hour of contracting the disease. “The Masque of the Red Death” is a very disturbing story that delves into a concept of life that everyone knows but rather not think about. In the story, it depicts a setting where a plague known as the red death is ravaging a country, where the only safe place from it is in a castle owned by the wealthy Prospero. However, rather than helping the people in the chaotic country, Prospero instead throws a party in order to distract himself and his guests from the plague. So despite all the security in the castle, the plague itself entered and killed everyone presenting the fact that no matter how rich or how powerful you are death will come for you. The story uses characterization to help show the theme, setting to aid that too and imagery
The constant dread experienced throughout the story is contributed by the strange imagery, and peculiar wording. Each detail of the multicolored rooms added to the suspense, from the “writhing” dreams, to the irregular path. Each loud chime from ebony grandfather clock gave a bit of fear, and multiplied the expectations of the readers, from the exceedingly musical tone, to the nervous laughter of the guests that followed. And lastly, the figure added a slow, creeping danger, from the “dabbled” blood, to the unusual outcome of the Prospero attack, and lastly the death of everyone after the figure is disrobed and found to be nothing but an illusion. Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” while short, is still a masterpiece.
