The Masque Of The Red Death Analysis

Decent Essays

“The Masque of the Red Death” is just one of many short stories that Edgar Allan Poe wrote involving death. The reason for Edgar Allan Poe having so many stories involving death is because he was always around it. His mother and father died before he was three years old leaving him to be raised as a foster child. He then married his cousin and life was looking great, but all that ended when his wife died of tuberculosis. In a book about his biography Poe describes her dying by saying, “she was suffering from a pulmonary hemorrhage and was dying” sending him into depression and alcoholism (Kennedy 46). His life consisted of him being abandoned by his family and death. That was all he had ever known, so it came into his writing. In contrast, Poe describes a kingdom run by Prince Prospero, who has done his best to separate his kingdom from the “Red Death.” Poe describes his kingdom as “an extensive and magnificent structure” (1). He describes it has a strong and loft wall, iron gates that been bolted shut, and it was filled with other provisions to keep the disease out. This shows that the Prince and his kingdom want nothing to do with the “Red Death” and that they are going to do anything to make sure that it stays that way. Poe makes the Prince’s kingdom seem like a place the reader would want to live and that it is a dream to live there. The setting also shows the time period that the story is set in. It is shown through the characters and words Poe uses in the story. “The presence of a prince and knights suggests a royal and
