Mesoamerica is the area in which the ancient Maya had lived, and is the area where modern Mayans are still reside. According to Coe, the Mayan geographic can range from Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Yucatan Peninsula, and the Mexican States of Chiapas and Tabasco (1966:17). Yet these areas are not limited to just Mayan. Many structural architecture remains today has proven the complexity of the Mayan culture in Mesoamerica. The Mayan history consisted of three main phases. The Preclassic period, the Classic period, and the Late Classic period. With each period containing several subdivisions. The Preclassic period started at the time civilization first emerged in Mesoamerica, around 1500 B.C., to about A.D. 250/300. The Preclassic period phase contained three subdivisions. The Early Preclassic, the Middle Preclassic, and the Late Preclassic. The Early Preclassic range from about 2000 B.C to about 1000/800 B.C.. The Middle Preclassic range from about 1000/800 B.C. to about 400/300 B.C.. The Late Preclassic range from about 400/300 B.C. to about A.D. 250. The Mayan civilization was thought to arose during the time of the Late Preclassic. The next phase is the Classic period, which range from A.D. 250 to about A.D. 600. And the final phase of the Mayan civilization is the Late Classic period, which range from A.D. 600 to about A.D. 900.
