Stereotypes are generalizations about a group of people whereby we attribute a defined set of characteristics to this group. These classifications can be positive or negative, such as when various nationalities are stereotyped as friendly or unfriendly.

One of the first things that comes to mind when thinking about sex workers is the danger posed to prostitutes. Theft, rape, kidnapping, threats, blackmail, murder, and more are things that these women, (and some men,) have to deal with on a daily basis. Cash is king in the sex work world, and can be easily or forcibly taken in many circumstances. Even for workers who demand payment beforehand, the fact remains that there is not much standing between a man and getting back the money he has to pay for sex. Some workers avoid this problem with a pimp, who can intimidate the client and make theft less of an issue, however pimps bring their own problems and hazards to the industry.

Stereotypes have great impacts on people all over the world. One of the reasons why people believe stereotypes blindly is that they know less about the objects. In order to decline the uncertainty of this new object, people choose to believe the stereotypes to feel safer. For the purpose of understanding the world more objectively, we ought to treat stereotypes critically and at least not be convinced of stereotypes blindly anymore.

A "stereotype" is a social perception of an individual in terms of group membership or physical attributes. Stereotypes are generalizations made about a group and then attributed to all members of that group.

In life, there is a common ground on which most every person can relate. At one time or another, we have all been promoters of or victims of the unremitting nature of stereotypes. According to the Webster’s dictionary, a stereotype is defined as “a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group.” Most stereotypes take on a negative form and are based on characteristics such as age, gender, race, status, and personal beliefs. Generally speaking, the greatest problem that arises with stereotypes is that they judge group of people by the characteristics and actions of their ancestors, rather than on an individual basis. In addition, this service industry brings bad consequences to society in the United States, such as, economic, health and social issues.

Many people believe that prostitution is wicked because it contains sex for money, and considered a sign of social order. Feminists, believe that prostitution provides a setting in which prostitution is viewed as being robbed, beaten, or raped. The two different beliefs hold negative views about prostitution. “Sex worker” is a label used to describe people who work within all trades of the sex industry, which is anything concerning the “exchange of sexual services for material compensation as well as the selling of erotic performances or products” (Weitzer 3). It is preferable to the term “prostitute” in that is is more inclusive to workers who don’t provide “full service” and does not have a history of being used as a degrading insult. People get into sex work for many reasons; while money is usually the biggest consideration, things like documentation or immigration status can also be important factors into someone’s decision (Incite National).

Using the word prostitution to describe workers in the sex industry is not a neutral description and it imposes a negative view or moral judgment on the individual. The word prostitution reinforces discrimination and it also creates stigma. It does not look at the work as being professional and also implies that she has a lack of worth seen by society. It also implies that a person is always using their body as a commodity for payment when it is not always the case since the services are diverse and vary by type of worker. It is always best to use the word sex worker because sexual services do not always imply offering the body as a commodity for payment. It does not imply any type of moral judgment or evaluation. The presences of stereotypes are overwhelming and are developed by both the environment a subject is raised in and their family. Stereotypes, which are pervasive throughout different societies, become intertwined in the collective values of the society as justification for all forms of social, economic, and political inequality among groups (Devine and Elliot 2000;Kaplan 2004; Operario and Fiske 2004). As people become more exposed to stereotypes they start to become a permanent part of a person’s life, they begin to stereotype themselves almost always involuntarily.

Stereotypes is negative impact to a certain group of people which is affect them unworthy, and incapable to communicate with others in their life. Even though stereotypes are not always negative type, it’s still leave a serious consequences.

There are 2 categories: direct and indirect. In the direct category, people know street prostitution, brothel, and escort. Street prostitution is “clients solicited on the street, park or other public places. Serviced in side streets, vehicles, or short stay premises” (What Are the Different Types of Prostitution?). Brothel is “premises explicitly dedicated to providing sex. Better security than street. Often licensed by authorities” (What Are the Different Types of Prostitution?). An escort is when “clients contacts sex worker by phone via hotel staff. Most covert form of sex work. Relatively expensive because of low client turnover. There are many forms of prostitutions, however, are individuals that are sex workers enjoy their jobs? An example is a woman named Celine Bisette. She was a college student trying to make ends meet. Bisette became an escort and was easy for her. However, she was judged and looked down upon because she was a escort. She lost friends and lost self-confidence in herself. “I am embarrassed to be a sex worker, even though I like my job, I’m good at it…” (Celine Bisette) In society, people are always judged regardless of what an individual does. If you’re good at something you should not let anyone’s opinions change what you like. There are sex workers who do enjoy their jobs and there are some who hate it.
