As George Orwell said “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot be conscious.” In the book The Giver everything is different, they are controlled, and have no emotions. In the modern day you can choose who you love, and choose what you do. The society in The Giver has very few similarities compared to our society today; however, there are many more differences that set them apart. A main difference between the modern day society and The Giver is their rules. In the modern day society they have a laws, they can choose some of what they do, and they can feel emotions. Many people take advantage of our memories, love, and choices. According to Marcandangel “When you have two good choices go with the one that scares you the most, because that’s the one that’s going to help you grow.” What you choose may change your life forever. The rules of the modern day society cause us to choose the right things to say and do. The society in The Giver is extremely controlled. They cannot feel emotions, they have no …show more content…
In the modern day society they are run very unorganized, have some leaders, and a good president. If we lead a community then we can leave it improved. What many people in the modern day society don’t understand is that in order to be a leader you have to be supportive, responsible, and you have to make an influence. In their government they have some leaders and the don’t take enough control of their society. In the society of The Giver they don’t have a government, but they do have a solid Chief Elder. In The Giver it states “ The initial speech at the Ceremony of Twelve was made by the Chief Elder, the leader of the community who was elected every ten years” (lowry 51). The Chief Elder was the one to make all of the decisions, to help the society enhance in their laws, rules, and jobs. The two societies are very divergent in many different
“Life here is so orderly, so predictable-so painless. It's what they've chosen” (Lowry 103). Imagine a world with no control over who you marry, what your job is, what you wear, or what you get to eat for every meal. This is what it’s like in The Giver by Lois Lowry. The people live in a community that is severely more controlled than ours. We have the freedom to have a pet, have as many kids as you want, and say what you want. The people in The Giver do not have those freedoms. The people in the community don’t even know what love is. In our world love is each individual’s choice, but not in The Giver. In other words, they don’t get to experience the precious parts of life, such has having a wedding and giving birth to your child. No society is perfect, but citizens of every community have an
My first reason on why I think the giver is a dystopia because they don’t get to choose their jobs. They have ceremony every year and when you turn twelve they get assigned a job. People will get assigned a job that they might not like, but there is a chance that they could get a job they like. For example on page 60“ in a firm, commanding voice she announced, ‘Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver Of Memory”. Jonas was nervous at first about his job because the chief elder has described his job as painful and that the pain was “ indescribable.” Later he then just wants to be a regular child instead of being the Reciever.
The Giver shows the ideology of a dystopian theme as it has the citizens being controlled by the authority. Members of the community are being watched by The Community so that they will not perform anything that hurts the population. For example, “”you know that there’s no third-chance”. The rules say that if there is a third transgression, he simply has to be released.” is quote said Jonas’s mother while sharing her experience that day. In this quote The Community is empowered and regulates every community member to be the way they want them to be; perfect. “Attention. A reminder Stirrings must be reported in order for treatment to take place. “”Jonas you HAVE to take your pills!””is another quote in The Giver. In this quote both the Community
The setting of The Giver is bleak and lackluster, portraying everyone and everything as the same. There are no differences or any uniqueness. All of the families have the same amount of people in their household. For example, the book describes families as “two children-one male, one female- to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules” (11). People dress, speak, and even think similarly. With the strict rules the town makes force everyone to be the same. The citizens have to talk in a certain way or they will get punished. The girls cannot do their hair differently than others. Children are not allowed to ride bicycles until they turn nine years old. The
However, the society in The Giver, which has limited choices and feelings for all its citizens, is an improvement from the ours in 2015. In the novel, the concept of death is not present. It is much more
The Giver is a novel that is set in a society that strives to be a utopia. A utopia is essentially a is “a place where no one has to make a decision, feel pain or even have a negative thought or a bad memory” (Goepfert). In The Giver their community focuses so intensely on this concept of a peace that they make many sacrifices in their pursuit to obtain it. This includes the loss of emotion, lack of individuality, deceit of the public, and a great burden on a small few. Ultimately the cost of this utopia is too high for this society.
The society in The Giver is based on sameness, which in order to achieve sameness individualism is discouraged, and rules and discipline matter most.
The Giver Imagine a black and white world with no love. In the book, The Giver, by Louis Lowry, the protagonist, Jonas, disagrees with this dystopian way of life. Modern day society and Jonas’s society have close to nothing in common. Jonas’s society is emotionless, experiences Sameness, and has no freedom of choice, while modern day society revolves around emotions, individuality, and freedom.
Imagine never worrying about getting bullied, feeling self conscious, or getting seriously hurt ever again. In The Giver the elders of the community control the climate, diseases, what is worn, and what is said. People have to follow many rules to protect their community. This community is a good place to live because it is very safe.
In our modern world, many would classify this current generation as disappointing and sometimes even, pathetic. We often categorize ourself as greed, trying to take more than we need. Many believe that our society is corrupted and can not be fixed although some sit back and just watch, much like, in both the book and the film. In 'The Giver', the elders gave an appearance of a perfect society with no violence, no problems and no pain but hid valuable information to many. They simply dismissed all of their wrong-doings for the better of their perfect world which in many cases is exactly like real life. In our modern day, we are not exactly openly given information about the world unless it is discovered by someone else. We are given
Vinh 7B In the giver book, there is the a dystopian society. That community is a dystopian society because it is unfreedom society, The freedom in that community is restricted. That community is really bad with a lot of weird rules made by the leader of this community, Chief Elder. In the Giver, the community has an independent thought.
Are modern day society has alot in common with the givers society. such as both societies have rules they must follow. What I mean by this is both our society and the givers society has rules they must follow are they will be punished severely. In the giver they have a law that you cannot be outside after 12:00. Our society has the same rule but ours is just a little earlier, we have
The society of The Giver has certain things that we as a whole don’t do like getting rid of color and animals all together. Modern day and the society in The Giver have many differences, including rules, family, and figureheads.
In The Giver, no problems ever occur within the society because it is supposed to be perfect. The society chooses everything for you such as your spouse and children so you do not make the mistake in the future. This perfect community eliminates so many problems that happen in our everyday world. Some things that would be safer for us to be chosen would be the types of medicines we take because this would eliminate all the use of drugs and drug overdoses. Also having society make our decisions about the type of clothes we wear eliminates all sort of dress code and shame to what we wear since everyone wears the same thing. Another way having society choose what is to be done because it eliminates all different types of bullying in children since they would not be allowed to say anything rude to one another. Having society choose our decisions definitely has its ups and
The Givers society and the society we live in today have differences but also similarities such as who is the leader or figurehead in the community. The leader in our society is the President. The President approves or veto´s the laws that the branches of government make. But in ¨The Giver¨ the figurehead is The Chief
