At the beginning of the book, We Were Liars, the mood is very mysterious and dark as Cady describes her family’s problems. However, as the book continues the mood starts to lighten up a bit, especially when Cady comes to reality with her inner ghost. The changing mood of book can be described using the song “Shake It Out” by Florence + The Machine. At first, when she first realizes that her cousins are dead the mood feels like these lyrics, “Regrets collect like old friends/Here to relive your darkest moments…/And I’ve been a fool and I’ve been blind/I can never leave the past behind.../I’m always dragging that horse around.” Not only do the lyrics feel bitter, but so does the music. When the song starts, it is very quiet and slow. The mood
Mood is the feeling that a story gives a reader, and Norman Maclean’s writing is brimming with it. The mood shifts throughout the entire story as well. Toward the beginning there is always a lighthearted and fun mood to the story. “He was last off the train, and he came down the platform trying to remember what he thought an international-cup tennis player looked like” (Maclean 32). This quote describes Neal when he first dismounted the train in Montana. Norman’s tone in this passage suggests that he disliked Neal. He critiques Neal’s ridiculous looks and comes to the conclusion that they would not get along. Another point in the story that shows a light tone occurs after Norman’s first attempt to fish with Neal. “The women squatted on the floor of the box, and had been making sandwiches until they saw my head appear like a target on canvas. Then they pointed their cutlery at me” (Maclean 53). Obviously, by reading their reaction to the sight of Norman, the trip did not go well. Norman left Neal earlier after Neal refused to fish with him. It was mainly Neal’s fault, but the women blamed Norman and did not let him inside the tent where it was dry. The mood of this part of the story is playful between the women and Norman. Maclean has made it clear to the reader that there is no danger in the situation but that Norman is being punished for Neal’s illness. Whereas most of “A River Runs Through It” has a bright mood, it changes near the end to one of sadness. “I am haunted by waters” (Maclean 113). This is the last line of the book, and it expresses Maclean’s true feelings about all of the losses he has experienced through the years. By this time, he has lost all of his family, which explains why he is “haunted.” The mood of this line is bone-chilling and sobering in its meaning to the author and also to the reader, who can now understand Maclean’s pain. The true skills of an author come
In life, everyone has their ups and downs and some may lead to distress. In “We Were Liars” it explains one of the toughest challenges to face. Death. In the book, the readers don’t find out that “the Liars” are dead until the end because, Cadence was hallucinating that they were still there. Cadence was desperate for help. She was lost. In “We Were Liars”, Emily Lockhart uses techniques such as flashbacks, metaphors and symbolism in order to explore Cadence in despair.
The mood displayed in this song is much more consistent than that of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The mood throughout this song is to stay true to who you are no matter of how much pain it may cost you. This mood is very deep when you contemplate it because there are people in this world that never see their family since they had a conflict or feud. This song is trying to say to people to make up with your family or whatever is holding you back from being who you are. The tone set in this song by the 80’s rock band is to always be who you are and true to who you are no matter of what happened in the past because there is always going to be a future. Bon Jovi made really clever figurative language when writing this song. He used this form of writing in almost every line of the song, which makes the song be interpreted in many different ways by different people. The first example found in the song of figurative language says, “Like a blind dog without a bone, I was a gypsy lost in the twilight zone.” This line shows that the main character of the song is confused of where they belong and are confused on where to head next. The following example of figurative language states, “Saving dimes.” You can conclude from this line that the main character of the song is tight on money and could possibly be living from pay to pay. We also learn from more figurative language used throughout the song that the
In the beginning of the story the mood was sad, mysterious and sympathetic this is because Mrs. shears dog was killed and Christopher really loved that dog. Haddon shows this on [page 3], “I pulled the fork out of the dog and lifted him into my arms and hugging him” This shows how much Christopher loves the dog and creates a turning point in the story. During the middle of the novel the author creates a mysterious worrying and has suspense because Christopher discovers letters from his mom after her death. This can be seen when Haddon writes ‘’Then I stopped reading the letter because I felt sick mother had not had a heart attack ,mother had not died mother had been alive all this time’’.’’ And father lied about it’’[page 112]. creates a turning point in the story because Christopher is baffled and his father reveals many secrets to him creating suspense mystery and worry towards Christopher and how he will react. Finally the mood during the end of the book was very hopeful because his relationship with his father is gradually improving also Christopher finds his mother. Haddon illustrates this on [page 220] ‘’and I called the dog sandy and father brought him a collar and a lead I was allowed to take him on walks to the shop and back’’ This shows how Christopher’s trust in his father is getting better and how he is slowly rebuilding his family relationship’s. Haddon uses mood
In the climax of the movie, Cady shows high levels of aggression in terms of manipulating and spying on the “Plastics” which leads to her experiencing low peer acceptance resulting in peer rejection. This was shown when she lied and manipulated both Janis and the “Plastics” resulting in the loss of her friends Janis and Damian and also being rejected by the “Plastics” especially Regina. The fighting and manipulation gets out of control when the “burn book”, which is a book that includes cruel and fabricated rumors about students and teachers of the school, is found. Near the end of the film, Cady begins to feel empathy toward her classmates because she had observed and participated in peer rejection. She tries to amend her relationships by apologizing and taking responsibility for her
Through out the song Bruce Springsteen keeps a depressed tone as if he has no hope in life. The constant tone in his voice maintains the melancholy feeling and makes one feel sad instead of mad of what is going on. The mood of the music matches the theme of the lyrics. The music sets a dismal feeling just like the words. The instruments used such as the guitar, the flute and the accordion set the perfect tempo for the gloomy song.
Clair says, “daddy-said-so,” in the second paragraph. The puerile tone is evident when Clair uses “Daddy”. It shows how the author is playful and childish. This adds to the characterizing of memories in a happy way. “My box of private things,” is an excellent example of her restrained tone. The author is trying to be reserve and private in the third paragraph. The restrained helps capture the youthful mood of the story. It does this by not going into depth, which makes the story seem like a child is telling it. “I kept it in my cigar box as a sort of momento of good time,” is another example of Clair’s tone. The tone Clair uses is melancholy, she uses this tone to describe how things have changed, and is feeling a bit remorse. The melancholy makes the author seem less innocent, by discussing how she doesn't want things to change. The different tones throughout each paragraph contributes to the characterizing of memories. The tone also helps display the coming of age part of the passage. In the beginning of the childhood children are happy and innocent, so Clair uses a puerile tone. While growing up children become more private, and the author emphasizes this with a restrained tone. During the time when children are becoming older they experience sadness, and lose some of their innocence, so Maxine Clair uses a melancholy tone. Additionally the different tones contribute
Beloved is a historical fiction book that indirectly depicts the life of Margaret Garner, a young mother during the mid 19th century who was arrested for murdering one of her children after having escaped slavery in order to prevent them from being returned and enslaved by the slave owner. This gory act was induced by the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which gave the authorization to slave owners to return escaped slaves to their plantations. Sethe, representing Garner in the book, murdered her two-year-old daughter, who left unnamed. While the story revolves around the powerful, yet traumatic life of a former slave, the author of Beloved, Toni Morrison, uses different literary techniques, such as personification and metaphor, and a literary
The tone is yet another area that should be examined when trying to fully understand a song. In the olden days, the tone is the attitude towards the lyrics. One tone is assertive because when Demi Lovato singings “Cause this is my ground/and I am dangerous/and they can get out/But it is all about me tonight” (Lovato 23-26), she wants people to feel assertive of the skin they are in and the life they have. Another tone is candid because people have to be able to be candid about them. The lyrics have a candid tone when Demi Lovato sings, “So you say I am complicated/that I must be outta my mind/but they have had me underrated/rated, rated” (Lovato 14-16). The International Encyclopedia of Depression states, “Depression in childhood, compared
This creates an darker and gloomy mood compared to the other tracks. Sadness could be another word to describe how the music flows throughout the piece. The composer
The tone and mood of Bohemian Rhapsody varies throughout the song. It begins with a slow and pitiful chorus that only murmuringly hints of the possible explosion later. Mercury¡¯s first verse gradually builds ¨C it is interesting to note the emphasis he gives to the word ¡°Mama¡± not only in this verse but also throughout the song. Despite the addition of various
Let Her Go, by Passenger contains many poetic devices. The theme of this song is losing a love and not realizing what you had or how much you actually appreciated the people you had in your life, until they are gone. The tone of this song was slow and steady, to make a stronger impact on the emotional lyrics. In this song, there was a lot of repetition, such as the words “let her go” and the lines “only need the light when it’s burning low”, “only miss the sun when it starts to snow” and “only know you love her when you let her go” are repeated five times throughout this song. The line “only miss the sun when it starts to snow” is also an example of alliteration, for it repeated the consonant sound of “s”, which made the lyrics flow more smoothly.
In a survey study most people stated that their investment in music derives from its ability to convey emotions(Gebauer, Kringelbach and Vuust 2012.) Studies have implied that music can elicit basic emotions such as happiness (Gebauer, Kringelbach and Vuust 2012.) Music with a fast tempo and major mode are considered and reacted to as happy music, while music with slow tempo and minor mode are deemed sad(Gebauer, Kringelbach and Vuust 2012.) This effect was shown through fMRI imaging while listening to different genres of music and participant questionnaires (Gebauer, Kringelbach and Vuust 2012.) A study conducted by Greasly and Lamont was able to show that there are two broad types of listeners; less engaged and more engaged(Greasley
Bad Day by Daniel Poster has been a song that has influenced my life since I can remember. It is really the first song that i remember hearing from my child hood. Every time it came on the radio me and my mom blasted it. The song goes through the motion in a third person narrative of someone having a bad day. I remembered during my childhood when I was having a bad day I would blast this song and it would make me in a better mood. It really begin the foundation of music for me. This song spoke volumes to me and it would instantly change my mood when I heard it. Now when I hear it I instantly am drawn to memories of me and my mother blasting it. It takes me back to my child hood in a way. I remember my favorite lines from the song was, “You're taking one down. You sing a sad song just to turn it around.” Its ironic, but sometimes listening to sad music will brighten my mood. I related a lot with that verse and the rest of the song. This is why Bad Day by Daniel Poster is part of my attention collection project.
This very slow song, so in my opinion I think it reinforces a sense of bittersweet, because even though she mentions how she wants to be remembered for the good things that she did she also mentions death and regrets in her song.
