Rainsford is a very skilled man, with many traits, he is a round character. Throughout the book you see rainsford do many things that proves he is a round character. In the book “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character, Rainsford is trying to survive for three days in the wild with a man hunting him. We are constantly hear his thoughts and his perspective on things, we know that Rainsford is a good character because he rejects the idea to hunt with General Zaroff, ad therefore is risking his own life. Rainsford told himself “I will not lose my nerve. I will not” This quote is an example of us the reader hearing his thoughts, which is another reason I think he is a round character. In the definition of round character it says that the character
Being able to overcome something in life is a great feeling. When you want to give up, but your inner body says no. The ability to overcome that feeling, although your mind and physical ability tells you no, is special. In Richard Connel's short story "The Most Dangerous Game," big game as Sanger Rainsford is tested in the following ways: strong versus the weak, the value of life, and becoming what he fears. Next, we will go into great detail about how Rainsford handles his weakness.
For example, he is shown to be intelligent and experienced when he says, “"I have played the fox, now I must play the cat of the fable"” (pg18). Rainsford used deception skills by zig-zagging back and forth and creating multiple tracks that confused Zaroff’s dogs. He used his experiences from previous fox hunts to achieve his goal of outsmarting General Zaroff. An illustration, of his resourcefulness and skill is shown when “...the dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell; but for his alertness, he must have been smashed beneath it” (pg19). Rainsford was quick to spot the dead branch and was resourceful to use it as a trap to slow down and try to stop Zaroff.
Rainsford is certainly a brave character. ‘“Hunting, Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (110). Rainsford is composed until he figures out that Zaroff’s new species is human beings. Rainsford has just met this man, doesn’t know where he is or anything about those people but he still puts his foot down. Rainsford knew it was murder, and so did Zaroff, but it was brave for Rainsford to tell him he would not keep a secret of what Zaroff was doing and Rainsford demanded to be taken home immediately. Rainsford was brave to tell Zaroff, straight forward, that he would not participate in his game. ‘“Ivan,” he said to Rainsford, “will supply you with hunting clothes, food, and a knife”’ (170). Rainsford was now in the game and had to participate. His bravery came out when a three day duel was forced against his will.
Human vs Nature, Rainsford being cast off his yacht would be a good example of this struggle.
The short story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, takes place on an island known to have a curious dread to many others. A big game hunter named Rainsford sits around on a yacht talking with one of his other fellow hunters named Whitney who describes how the hunt may only be best for the hunter in lines of feelings but, Rainsford has a different opinion on that matter. When Rainsford is left on the island, he goes through a series of events that leads to a peril of danger. Rainsford states “he had never slept in a better bed”(Connell 15 par. 2) after experiencing a journey that could’ve put his life in jeopardy. This gives the reader a sense Rainsford is projected as a dynamic character from his progression in thoughts
When many people think of hunting, they often think of searching through forests, jungles, and fields to find certain animals that they will stalk and then kill. However, Rainsford, a character in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, is forced to try a very different form of this sport invented by a mysterious man he meets on Ship Trap Island. General Zaroff, another character in this short story, traps people on his island and hunts with them by seeing if they can survive three nights and evade his attempts at killing them. Before arriving on this obscure island, Rainsford was already an experienced hunter, already heard of by quite a few people. After falling off his yacht and relying on his instincts to safely make it to
Being lost in an island, hungry, and tired is not an everyday thing. So Rainsford being in that situation, had no other choice than except Zaroff’s generosity. Zaroff gave Rainsford clothes, food and, a place to sleep. Zaroff tells Rainsford to join him for dinner, and Rainsford went to the dinner room as told. Sitting down eating there meal. The two men’s starts a conversation and starts to talk about their lives. Zaroff learns a lot of things about Rainsford and so does Rainsford. Rainsford learns that Zaroff is a smart man and a hunter just like him, but Zaroff him hunting people is part of things that he hunts for. Zaroff on another hand learns that Rainsford is a pretty smart, educated man and lastly a hunter.4
In the short story," The Most Dangerous Game", composed by Richard Connell, the protagonist Rainsford changes significantly. At the start of the story, he is very inconsiderate. This changes drastically as he is really confident and becomes more respectful towards hunting. At the beginning Rainsford is a very inconsiderate person, he expresses this when he is talking to Whitney about all the jaguars that they are going to hunt. As the story evolves Rainsford is shown to be a very confident individual.
In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford gets trapped on Ship-trap Island and has no way to get out so he needs a food source to survive. He needs to hunt for food, he can't only eat plants the whole time he is there. Before Rainsford fell off the boat, he was talking to his friend about how “the hunter had his nerve with him to tackle [the animal] with a light gun” (Connell 22). Rainsford knows when a gun is too small to hunt an animal, it seems that Rainsford clearly knows a lot about hunting, considering he has been hunting his whole life. As Rainsford has been walking around for awhile, he comes across this huge mansion, he is invited inside and as he is walking “the hall [there] were mounted heads of many animals-- lions, tigers,
People in society change based on their experiences. In many stories authors use dynamic characters. In the short story "The Most Dangerous Game", Connel uses Rainsford as a protagonist and charismatic character. The short story "The Most Dangerous Game" is about General Zarrof and Rainsford on an Island competing against each other for survival. For example, in the beginning of the short story, Rainsford had said to his colleague on the yacht in the ocean, going to a world wide hunter competition, passing an Island many sailors had feared " You're a big-game hunter, not a philosopher, who cares how a jaguar feels?" (Connel 60). Rainsford's character in the beginning was careless, thoughtless and ignorant about how he had viewed not only jaguars but many other animals in general.
Rainsford, a big game hunter, falls overboard on his boat and falls into the Caribbean Sea. He struggles to keep his head up but he manages to make it to the closest island shore. Rainsford soon discovers that he is on shipwreck island, a island that most people don’t escape. While he explores the island he runs into many life threatening encounters. In order to escape he will have to come up with good skills to keep him alive while he participates in General Zaroff’s game. In order to win this game he will have to hide in the jungle for three nights and to not get seen or caught, and if he does then General Zaroff, another hunter, gets to kill him. Many survival traits are developed throughout the story that keeps Rainsford alive. In the “Most
Have you ever heard of a “predator vs. prey” relationship. In this short story The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell. The year that the events in the story are not stated but one can conclude that it takes place after WWI. Dwight Lyman Moody once said, " character is what you are in the dark," to me that means that when someone is in the dark and they start to become afraid. The reaction to their fear reveals the type of person they are. In the Short story "The Most Dangerous Game," Richard Connell shows that Rainsford reveals his character when he is in the "dark" being hunted by the General. His reaction or his instinct to this internal conflict is to reveal is hunter self and turn the hunter into the hunted.
Throughout the story, Rainsford proves he is caring. For instance, after Zaroff proves to Rainsford that he hunts humans for pleasure, Rainsford remarks, ”Hunting? Great guns? General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (Connell, 4)! This is showing that Rainsford values human life.
