The Necklace “Wake up for school honey!” I heard my mom waking me up at the usual 6:00 am. Birds were chirping outside and the sun was minutes away from rising. I got up to get ready for school. I banged my leg on the side of my bed on my way to the bathroom. It made a mark on my leg from how hard I hit it. I got to school early and sat alone in the cafeteria. Everyone walked in happy with their friends talking about their weekends. While I was just reading some book about some ancient kung fu warrior. The book wasn’t bad but the thing was that in my community I’m the worst fighter ever. I always wanted to improve my fighting skills but I just couldn’t. It was like everyone was just so much more better than me that I couldn’t ever win a kung fu fight. The bell rang to go to class and on my way upstairs I bumped into one of the best kung fu fighters in my district program. His name was David. “ Watch where you're going pussy!” David said in a angry tone. I just stayed shut and watched him and his friends laugh at me. This kind of stuff makes me angry inside but in reality I can’t really do anything but let it happen. Class was boring as always but of course I have good grades. I had good grades in every class but Physical Education. I’m a tall skinny toothpick who struggles doing any type of exercise, but I used to be on the cross country team in tenth grade. Calculus ended that abruptly, was the last class I had for the day. I had a lot of homework for the night but
The quality of one’s emotional life changes over the years. But the basic instincts and desires, greed and hope, seem to remain constant. In short story “The Necklace” written by Guy de Maupassant is about a woman by the name of Mathilde. She’s described to be average in the physical sense and was married to a clerk by the name of Loisel. The couple get invited to a ball and shortly after, Mathlide complains that her wardrobe was too embarrassing to wear to the ball. Loisel buys his wife a gown and suggests she borrows a necklace from her friend to complete the outfit. Mathlide falls in love with a necklace from the collection. “She threw her arms round her friend's neck, kissed her passionately, then fled with her treasure” (Maupassant 44). The night of the ball Mathlide realized she had lost the necklace. The couple decide to replace the necklace ad work ten years to pay off the debt, finally finds out the original necklace was a fake. This short story created a perspective for who to blame for the outcome of the situation, which in this case is Mathlide.
The Story of an Hour and The Necklace share many similarities and also many differences; both explore the feeling that both wives harbor towards their husbands and the lack of communication that both wives share. In this essay I will discuss the similarities and differences that the two short stories share with regards to communication.
People who are driven by greed end up focusing on what they do not have instead of being grateful for what they do have. This is relevant in the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant because Mathilde Loisel ends up losing everything she owns just because she lets greed drive her decisions and get the best of her. When receiving an invitation to an extravagant ball, she declines because she says she does not have anything nice to wear. In the beginning of the short story she says, “There is nothing more humiliating than looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women.(Maupassant).” The reader sees how she puts value in possessions and what others think of her. After finding a dress and then borrowing a necklace that she thought
It was the day, the report card appeared into my mail box. I headed into the house slowly, my father walking in front of me. The marble stone floor was colder than usual and was gnawing on my foot. The sense of danger hung in the air, but I walked on. As my father summon me to come forward my foot, obediently, dragged themselves in front him. Knowing that I will be stroke with the slender bamboo stick, instead of fear rising, indifference was replaced by it. The first blow struck my buttock. As it gained speed, almost the entire of my body surface was struck, and then it ended. Black and blue covered my legs and arms as like it was paint. However, unlike paint, it can’t be washed. I hate report cards. Since then, my grades were above average, but until today, I still hate them. You can say that it was that day that changed my languid attitude to a busy worker. I can’t say that my attitude and behavior haven’t changed from since, but I can say that it is kind of solid.
Around the world, values are expressed differently. Some people think that life is about the little things that make them happy. Others feel the opposite way and that expenses are the way to live. In Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace”, he develops a character, Madame Loisel, who illustrates her different style of assessments. Madame Loisel, a beautiful woman, lives in a wonderful home with all the necessary supplies needed to live. However, she is very unhappy with her life. She feels she deserves a much more expensive and materialistic life than what she has. After pitying herself for not being the richest of her friends, she goes out and borrows a beautiful necklace from an ally. But as she
As a team, the goal of this presentation is to reveal to the class, how the Necklace can relate to modern day society. In order to understand and apply the reading to modern day society, we set the event to take place in court as an exaggeration to a situation that can be solved behind closed doors. By questioning the characters in the story, each will slowly reveal how the reading is applied to our everyday lives (such as modern day mentality, christian beliefs, and moral standards between friends).
In "The Necklace" the authors choice of words, or diction, is very well articulated. I enjoyed this story because the narrator, Guy de Maupassant sets us so much suspense with the tone of the story. Madame Louisel essentailly loses a valuable item, or so she thought, and goes to major extents and even life-deminishing problems to just make it seem like she was not responsible enough to take care of a necklace for a night.
On August 31, 1997, The beautiful Princess Diana died from a tragic car accident in Paris, France. The loss was devastating to many around the world and millions of flowers were laid before Buckingham Palace. Her life had changed how royalty was viewed and how media and paparazzi worked, especially in the UK, and that change only sped up after the accident. And just like how society went through a change after Princess Diana's death, Mme. Mathilde Loisel of Guy de Maupassant's The Necklace underwent the change after the death of her current lifestyle. Mme. Loisel had lost a borrowed necklace that had been lent to her for a ball. She and her husband were able to replace it without the owner finding out, but it cost them 10 years of poverty and labor to do so. Mme. Loisel had lost everything, and she came to appreciate what she had, because she didn't have it forever.
Money can definitely equal happiness as seen in "The Necklace", my personal life, and in the world today.
The short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant is about a young beautiful woman named, Mathilde who was born into a family of clerks but despite her station believed she deserved to live a life of wealth and luxury. She always dreamed of living a glamorous lifestyle; attending glamorous parties, engaging in charming conversations, and being admired by many. This story is set in France during the late 1900s. In this time women could not work for their status. A woman’s status was solely determined on who she married. To Mathilde’s disappointment, she married into the middle class. Every day she is tortured by the reality of her life. Her husband, Monsieur Loisel, is content with his status and belongings, unlike his wife, and works exceedingly hard to make Mathilde happy even if it means sacrificing his own. A necklace is a small item that turns out to be Madame and Monsieur’s ultimate status downfall. Guy de Maupassant uses imagery, symbolism, and irony to show how greed and materialism can drastically effect one’s life and character through the protagonist, Mathilde.
At first glance, Chopin’s Story of an Hour (1894) and de Maupassant’s The Necklace (1884), appear to have very little in common. Chopin’s story, as displayed in its title is quite short; while in comparison, de Maupassant tells a much more detailed account of the beleaguered Loisel’s, who must learn from the self-centred Madam Loisel. With de Maupassant’s depiction of his female protagonist as selfish and ungrateful; it is difficult to fathom Chopin, known for her active role in describing woman's oppression in the nineteenth century. Interestingly, Chopin, a realist, did consider de Maupassant to
How you ever met a person who is different on the inside than on the outside? Mathilde Loisel is a pretty, middle-class woman who lives in Paris in the late 1800s. The story “The Necklace” is written by Guy de Maupassant. She doesn’t think about others/selfish. Her husband treats her like he should and she isn’t happy with it. She cares too much about her outward appearance. Besides the fact that she is pretty, Mathilde Loisel is also a closed-minded, selfish, and a vain person.
when she hears of her husband’s death. Although she is not stuck as many women would have
In today's world what we wear and how we present ourselves can say a lot about who we are and the stories we can tell. Without speaking a word to another person someone could decipher many things about me based on a necklace that I wear. My necklace could reveal many different aspects of who I am. it could reveal that I am close with my family. It could also be determined that I value the sentimental value over the monetary value. As a gift from my grandmother I have many personal attachments to this necklace, it will allow people to think certain things about me, and it can reveal a lot about who I am; but there are also things that it doesn't show.
“She was one of those pretty and charming girls, born, as if by an accident into a family of clerks” this is what Guy de Maupassant started “The Necklace” off by saying (Maupassant 221). Also, this helps describe the main character and to give the readers a visual of Mathilde Loisel. “The Necklace” is a short story that Mathilde Loisel, the main female character, wants to be a higher class than she really is. Mathilde’s life drastically changes one night after she loses the necklace. Guy de Maupassant incorporates his use of the social class into the short story.
