Second hand smoke is smoke that comes from any form of tobacco that is exhaled and later inhaled by another person nearby. Second hand smoke can put just about anyone’s life in danger.

Regardless of consumer belief, smoking dramatically increases the chances of contracting many diseases - such as heart disease or high blood pressure. Although not every user experiences these diseases, it is well known that smoking can decrease one’s life time dramatically. When a person experiences secondhand smoke it can affect their health in many ways. One major way that secondhand smoke can affect someone's health is lung cancer. In the United States, approximately seven thousand non-smokers die each year due to lung cancer obtained through secondhand smoke. Many smokers may say that smoking is a way of relaxing for them, but there are others non-harmful ways to relax. Another major consequence of secondhand smoke is heart disease. Over thirty three thousand non-smokers are killed from heart disease because of exposure to cigarette smoke. This is because only 15% of smoke is inhaled by smokers; the other 85% is in the air for nonsmokers to inhale, whether they want to or not (Page). The dangers that result from second hand smoke include: cancer, asthma, lung infections, emphysema, heart disease, pneumonia, ear infections, strokes, sinus infections, nose ear and throat discomfort, nausea, headaches and dizziness. Twenty percent of the population is at risk for obtaining lung disease due to second hand smoke, and for those who live with a smoker, there is a thirty percent increase of getting lung cancer or heart attacks (Page). Nonsmokers can even have carcinogens found in their blood. The bottom line remains: when somebody smokes, everyone around is effected.
