Often, people who find their lives in a downward spiral feel they must place blame on something, like a curse, because there is no other way to explain what's happening in their lives. In The Brief LIfe of Oscar Wao, Diaz argues that the supernatural, specifically, the Dominican Republic, curse “Fuku” is present in individuals' lives; he conveys this argument through Oscar and Beli’s encounters with the Mongoose.

One of my many aspirations at the University of Texas is to become a principal factor of the scholar community. Being a pertinent part of this highly-educated group will be a crucial part of my future as well as my fellow colleagues at UT. Not only will the Forty Acres Scholar Program help pay for my education at the University of Texas, it will teach me the values of education and teaching others. The scholarly community will help me branch my passions to other people so that they can also be shown the same light that was shown to me and they can see what made me adopt my taste in sports, music, and life in general. In a recent program, students worked with the College of Integrated Science and Technology. Professors from four different departments created a hands-on experience for the scholars. First, scholars learned about the ethics of science and technology by creating a short story with a monster and drawing out how the story should go. In the next session, scholars put their stories to life using MIT’s Scratch program, a basic and fun introduction to coding. The goal of these programming days is to teach the scholars a new skill they can develop, as well as to introduce to them to activities, and possibly careers, which they may not have been familiar with. As a recent graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Design focusing on art history and education, the position as Education Coordinator and Advisor at Buena Vista University captured my attention as an opportunity to work with students through educational programming. As a recent college student, I provide a valuable perspective on academic advising through my own personal experiences. I have learned many advisors lack in truly connecting and catering to each student’s individual situation and needs. Buena Vista University, a relatively small area college, provides an opportunity to fully connect and provide personal one-on-one experience all students deserve. Subsequently, students gain the absolute most out of their college education. A large part of my career goals entail helping students of all ages engage, thrive and connect in their own individualized way.

College tuition for students to uncommon schools just got a little easier thanks to Keith and Keely Mann. Effective in 2016 Keith and Keely Mann will be establishing a $5,000 scholarship for professional achievement. Students interested in benefiting from these funds will need to complete an essay of 1,000 words. The essay should elaborate on the benefits of a college degree and how it could be used to help the student further their career. The scholarship will continue on an annual basis with winners receiving the nod by the end of March.

I am a firm believer in the adage, “The university does not make the student; The student makes the university.” Therefore, I believe that my intellectual and academic interests could be explored at any university. However, I feel as though the University of Pennsylvania will provide me with an unrivaled pathway on which to explore my interests. Two distinct academic choices that caught my attention were Freshmen Seminars and Service Learning, due to their relevance to my interests.

University students, their experience with continued education, and their desire for internships combined with the children’s need for prolonged education will be beneficial to everyone involved. This will also cut down on costs in a budget, which is already highly constricted. We call this program Students4Students.

Although I can’t answer all the questions about how I’ll do it, I’m certain that I will make a positive difference in the world and I am also certain that Barnard College is ideal for me. Barnard’s commitment to intellectual risk-taking and discovery and its joint theatre program are the main factors that influenced me to apply. Barnard is known for its intimate learning environment and embodies qualities that I find attractive and motivating. I’ve spent my entire life going from one close-knit group to the next. Whether it was Taekwondo, Dance, Theatre, or The Commonwealth Governor’s School, each group was empowering, nurturing, and noble in its own way. Duke is a haven for the seekers and thinkers of the world. In search of an education that will help me make a qualitative impact on the world, I find myself in awe of Duke’s multifaceted and integrative curriculum, one that is the crucial next step in my quest for intellectual discovery. Duke is grounds for both academic and social innovation. Bass Connections provides the means to collaboratively make the global impact I dream of, thus quenching my unending curiosities about the world around me-- a world that is not far from Duke’s reach. After researching alongside world-renowned professors through Duke’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative, I will be able to implement our collaborative ideas on a global scale through DukeEngage. I
