The Outsiders is a Novel set in the 1960’s that explains the divide between people with similarities and differences. The book explains life as it was in the past, is in the present, and will be in the future. It talks about the rift between different people in society and their social classes. Every rift must try to be changed by someone for the benefit of society, and that person is exalted as a hero. There are many heroes in the outsiders, but the biggest hero is Ponyboy because he was empathetic to others, quick to think and act, and stands strong and moves forward to overcome challenging events in life that seem impossible to overcome. The first reason Ponyboy is a hero in The Outsiders is because he was empathetic to others. When Johnny murdered Bob, he had to run away to avoid getting captured by the Cops, but Ponyboy didn’t. Yet he ran away with Johnny anyway because he was empathetic to him. It must be hard leaving everything you’ve liked or known to help your friend endure the inevitable hardships coming. Ponyboy was also empathetic to Cherry when she was struggling with destiny. “I started to turn and walk away, but something in her eyes made me stop. I was ashamed.” (129) Ponyboy could have left her bawling, but instead he is empathetic to her and tries to cheer her up with the correlative traits that they share. “‘Hey’ I said suddenly, ‘Can you see the sunset real good from the west side?’ She blinked, startled, then smiled. ‘Real good.’ ‘You can see it good from the east side too’ I said.” (129-130) he is using the consubstantial trait of them looking at sunsets to cheer them both up. Ponyboy is exemplifying empathy throughout the novel to others, which is a great quality in a hero. The second reason Ponyboy is the most valuable hero in the novel is because he was quick to think and act. He was the one who decides to run into the fire to save the kids, the one who acted first in that perilous moment. “‘I’ll get them, don’t worry!’” (91) Ponyboy decides to run into the fire when he could possibly die without a second thought. Others were trying to stop him, but he didn’t think twice and ran into the burning building. “I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was; We started it! We started
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is about two groups of kids the greasers and the Socs. The Socs are the rich kids who drive expensive cars and wear expensive clothes and the greasers are considered the bums. They don’t have money and they don’t get whatever they want, they also have to work extra hard to get to where they want to be. If you are considered a greaser you are a muffin and the Socs are the cupcakes. Everybody would prefer a cupcake over a muffin, but in this story two boys were just trying to protect themselves and they get into some trouble while doing it so, they hit the road. I am going to tell you about whether or not Ponyboy and Johnny are heroes.
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. HINTON the main character Ponyboy’s identity changes multiple times over the text. In the beginning of the story Ponyboy was introduced as a greaser, a greaser is someone who is usually poorer than the middle class and like to screw around and start gang fights and they are considered hoods as stated on pages 2-3, “We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we’re wilder, too. Not like the Socs, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace almost like hoods.” this shows that even though the Socs are much more wild the greasers are still considered the bad crazy hood people. Ponyboy didn’t like being a greaser
However, they all see Ponyboy as an outsider: Being the youngest and the smartest, they have hopes that he will not turn out like them. Quiet and sensitive, Ponyboy is not as tough as the others, and his friends hope that
One characteristic Ponyboy shares most in The Outsiders is his intelligence. In the beginning of the book, S.E. Hinton states, ¨I'm supposed to be smart; I make good grades and have a high IQ and everything, but I don't use my head. Besides, I like walking.¨ The author explains in this quote how Ponyboy is both smart and has common sense. After Johnny killed Bob, Ponyboy and Johnny use their intelligence to decide to go to Dally for help getting the items they need while on the run.
In the beginning of “The Outsiders”, Ponyboy only likes a few people but in the end, he realizes that he judged people unfairly. In the beginning, he only appreciated Johnny (the second youngest gang member), Soda (the middle child in his family) and Two-Bit (a wisecracking member of the gang). He dislikes Dallas (the most criminal of the gang) and Steve and thinks that his oldest brother, Darry, dislikes him. He also believes that all Socs are bad. His judgments are first brought into question when he meets Cherry Valence, a female Soc. Ponyboy, referring to her and her friend wrote, “It seemed funny to me that Socs -if these girls were any example - were just like us.” (37) Pony’s views on the Socs evolve again when he talks to Randy. After talking to Randy, Pony thinks, “Socs are just guys after all. Things are rough all over, but it was better that way. That way you could tell the other guy was human too." (118) By the end of the novel, Pony does not think all Socs are good because there are Socs like Bob, who jumped Johnny and Pony, but he realizes that people should be
To start off, Ponyboy is a hero because of the courage he displays through the book. “I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was: We started it. We started it. We started it!
He is also a hero because he’s good at school, he is a good student, he’s athletic, and he avoids making tension with his rivals. Ponyboy is a hero to the kids in the wrong side of the cities for showing them that it’s possible to escape, and get a better future, he’s a hero to the kids who would’ve died, a hero to his brothers, and many
Ponyboy is caring because he is thoughtful. Towards the end of the story Ponyboy went to see Johnny while he was in the hospital. I think that Pony taking his time to visit Johnny while the brawl was about to happen showed Pony’s thoughtfulness. It is clear to see that Ponyboy cares about other people more than himself. He went to go visit Johnny in the hospital taking up his own time, Pony is being thoughtful. Maybe Johnny wanted someone to come visit because he felt lonely. Next, Pony showed his thoughtfulness when he risked his life to save the kids in the fire. On page 91 paragraph 8 Ponyboy said,”“I’ll get them don’t worry”I started for a dead charge for the church.” I think that this shows the reader that Ponyboy wants to put other people before himself and save the kids from the fire. Ponyboy is cleary thoughtful because he was willing to die to save other people's lives and he is willing to lose his own life. Ponyboy is caring because he was willing to spend his time doing stuff for other people and he is
I would consider Ponyboy a hero because when they went back to the church that they stayed in. Ponyboy saw that the church was on fire. Without thinking Pony went to see what happened at the church. Then Ponyboy realized there was some kids still inside. Without a doubt Pony went into the church while it was up in flames. He found the kids in a room at the back of the church. He then went to go help and save the children. That's why I consider Pony being a hero.
Ponyboy is a hero because he went into a burning church and saved the children that were in the the church. Ponyboy is also a hero is because he is a survivor. Ponyboy is a hero because he is not afraid to step up. Ch.8 says a quote from johnny and it says I would, I would help her and Randy both if I could. "Hey," I said suddenly, "can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?" That meant that Ponyboy has the desire to help people in problems which makes him a hero. Another quote was in ch 4 which meant that ponyboy isn’t afraid of anything and it says “You know what a Soc is? I said, my voice trembling with rage. "White trash with Mustangs and madras." And then, because I couldn't think of anything bad enough to call them, I spit at them.” Heroes are people who rescue others or people that do something that is really brave. Ponyboy did that, so he is a hero in that way.
As a young adult, it is difficult to grow up without parents and still be tough and brave. In addition, teens can be emotional and overreact at times. In the novel The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, a fourteen-year-old kid named Ponyboy Curtis feels different emotions that make him stand out from other Greasers, or “hoodlums”. Ponyboy, the youngest of all the Greasers, is a great example of a teen who feels isolated, brave, and emotional throughout the novel.
Some people might think that Ponyboy has the stereotype of a hero and not a greaser, because he, Johnny and Dally saved the kids at the burning church. “I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time.”(42), after saving the trapped kids Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally were called the bravest kids the school teacher has ever seen. Another reason that Ponyboy could be considered as a hero is that he tried to save Dally, because when he was in a police chase. Ponyboy tried to make the police not shoot Dally, he was tried trying his life for his friend but he could not complete. The final reason that Ponyboy is a hero is that he helped out Cherry (a girl soc who is a spy, rich, and snobby). What Ponyboy taught her is that the socs and the same it does not depend on the side they live
Ponyboy is a hero, because he save the kids at the church and he could have died. He went into the church and risked his life for the kids in there. Some evidence I have to back up my reason that he is a hero is that he asked where the kids were in the burning church so he could save the. Also, Ponyboy is considered a hero by the teachers who where at the church because they said we think you must have two come from heaven.
At the beginning of the book, Ponyboy is in intelligent, young teen, but he lacks the perspective to understand the environment around him. He can only see his side of the story and fails to understand why others act the way they do. The first example of this is his oldest brother Darry. He thinks Darry hates him because he is always giving Ponyboy a hard time about his lack of common sense, his grades,...
Have you ever had two friends that are enemies? In the story, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Cherry Valance (her real name is Sherri) is a fashionable, fiery, red headed, emotional, understanding, and trustworthy friend. The story took place in the mid 1960’s in Tulsa, OK. Greasers and Socs are two very different, yet same groups, which most definitely do not get along. After Ponyboy and Johnny got jumped, Johnny killed Bob, a Soc who was also Cherry’s boyfriend. During Ponyboy and Johnny’s hiding out in an abandoned church, the church starts on fire, while the children are playing in there. Johnny and Ponyboy somehow made their way back in to save the kids. Johnny and Ponyboy both made it out alive. Unfortunately, however, Johnny gets out with severe burns and a broken back. While he is in the hospital, Cherry has a conflict with herself: she is asked by Ponyboy to go see Johnny in the hospital, but she says no because she doesn’t want to face the person who killed Bob. In the time of the trial, Cherry and other Soc’s testify and come clean about the night of the stabbing. Consequently, since they told the truth, Johnny, Sodapop, and Darry all got to stay together. Cherry Valance is an emotional, caring, and trustworthy friend.
