Have you ever wondered how the 1960’s was like? Would you have been fearful, jovial, or melancholy? In the book, The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton the main character Ponyboy Curtis lives with his two brothers, Sodapop and Darry, and is involved in a gang called the “greasers.” Ponyboy realizes what it is to be a kind person instead of being violent, he is always on top of his studies and is very observant of others.
In the first place, a person with a kind and sympathetic nature is a person that will do good deeds like Ponyboy, even if he’s in a gang that is supposed to be barbarous, vicious, or even acquire ways to convert into a criminal he is kind hearted. For example, on page 78 it says,“You ain’t like any of the gang. I mean I couldn’t

In fact, Ponyboy has done this countless times. In other words, Ponyboy would be surprised by what he learns about someone just by looking at their actions or face expressions. For example, on page 86 it states,“It was hard to believe a Soc would help us, even a Soc that dug sunsets.” Ponyboy now realizes it doesn’t matter who you are financially or your complexion. To repeat, on page 88 it says,“He meant it when he said he didn’t care about his parents. But he and the rest of the gang knew Johnny cared and did everything they could to make it up to him. I don’t know what it was about Johnny-maybe that lost-puppy look or those big scared eyes… made everyone his big brother.” Ponyboy clarifies that Johnny still cares about his parents even if they beat him up, however, Dally is upset and told Johnny to forget about them. Ponyboy comprehends Dally really cares for Johnny. To enumerate, lastly on page 162 it mentions,“A real person, the best buddy a guy ever had… Did he have a kid brother that idolized him? Maybe a big brother who kept bugging him not to be so wild? His parents let him run wild-because they loved him too much or too little?Did they hate us now?” Ponyboy doesn’t understand why a Soc would come and talk to him normally and tries to put the pieces of the puzzle together. With this in mind, Ponyboy is intellectual, a deep
In the novel, Ponyboy couldn’t even walk a short distance home without getting jumped by the Socials. This idea is heartbreaking to realize that a child can’t safely walk around his or hers neighborhood without being harmed in some areas. The novel shows a numerous amount of young adults being killed or harmed due to gang violence. For example, Johnny Cade killed Bob Sheldon in self-defense, which was devastating to his family, friends, and girlfriend. The author also represents a positive side to violence at the end of the novel. The rumble between the two groups without weapons, helped end the aggression and hatred between them. This uncovered the common interest that they shared and allowed them to relate to each other on an emotional and physical level.
In the book the outsiders Ponyboy is the main character. He is mainly distinctive from the rest of the characters by his physical traits and by his actions. Ponyboy was harassed several times by the Socs just because he was a greaser. Overall Ponyboy didn't use his head before he his actions. It caused him to get into many accidents such as when he was jumped in the beginning of the story because he walking home from the movie theaters by himself. Not only did Ponyboy not use his head he also was altruistic. An example of this is when he ran into the burning church to save kids even though it could have killed him.
Another appreciable example showing Ponyboy is kind-hearted is when he would fight to see Johnny. The first indication of this is when it says, “ The nurses wouldn’t let us see Johnny. He was in critical condition. No visitors…. We both begged and pleaded, but we were getting nowhere until the doctor found out what was going on. “ This means that Johnny would beg and plead as hard as he could just to see Johnny. Even though they are only friends, Ponyboy treated him like family demanding to see
Ponyboy is a hero because he is courageous and not afraid to rescue and help people in their times of need. One main reason why Ponyboy is a hero is that when school children are stuck in a fire Ponyboy runs in to rescue them. Ponyboy yells to the teacher, “I’ll get them, don’t worry… I’ll get them,” and immediately rushes into the burning building to rescue the children. This quote shows the true nature of Ponyboy because he is concerned for a group of children trapped in a burning church. He was so worried that he goes in to the burning church with disregard for his safety and saves the kids. What he did when the church was burning meats the definition of a hero perfectly, he was courageous, saved people who needed his help, and was even called a hero by the newspaper. Another way that Ponyboy is a hero is that when Randy, a soc comes over and talks to Ponyboy, Ponyboy listens and talks to Randy about Randy’s problems. Randy then goes on to say, “Thanks kid.” This is a small gesture of kindness shown by Ponyboy, yet it is an act of heroism too. People do not have to save the world to be a hero, a small act of kindness still can take a courageous gesture like overcoming the differences between two people like Ponyboy and Randy did. Heroism in its own simple but pleasant way being kind to others is also heroic. Ponyboy is a hero because no mater how big or small
I wasn't about to go through that flaming door, so I slammed a big rock through a window and pulled myself in. It was a wonder I didn't cut myself to death, now that I think about it.” He shows courage because he barrels into the church that was a raging inferno to save innocent children. He also shows courage at the end of the book, “’You're the guy that killed Bob Sheldon,’ one of them said. ‘And he was a friend of ours. We don't like nobody killing our friends, especially greasers.’ ‘Big deal.’ I busted the end of my bottle and held on to the neck and tossed away my cigarette. ‘You get back into your car or you'll get split.’ They looked kind of surprised, and one of them backed up. ‘I mean it.’ I hopped off the car. ‘I've had about all I can take from you guys.’ I started toward them, holding the bottle the way Tim Shepard holds a switch--- out and away from myself, in a loose but firm hold. I guess they knew I meant business, because they got into their car and drove off.” He fearlessly opposes the Socials, clearly showing that he has great courage and should not be underestimated. Also, another time that Ponyboy proves to be a courageous person is when he fights at the rumble even though he feels a bit sick. He put his gang first and fought for them in the rumble.
The 1967 novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is about the social outcasts; the Greasers and their rivalry against the high class Socs. In the beginning of the book the characters values and attitudes are revealed to the reader through the point of view of Ponyboy. As the book progresses and the lives of the characters take a turn for the worse there is a significant impact on the characters resulting in an alteration of their values and attitudes. Ponyboy, Dally and Johnny experience these changes due to the death of Bob the Soc and the chain of events that follow.
Ponyboy is caring because he is thoughtful. Towards the end of the story Ponyboy went to see Johnny while he was in the hospital. I think that Pony taking his time to visit Johnny while the brawl was about to happen showed Pony’s thoughtfulness. It is clear to see that Ponyboy cares about other people more than himself. He went to go visit Johnny in the hospital taking up his own time, Pony is being thoughtful. Maybe Johnny wanted someone to come visit because he felt lonely. Next, Pony showed his thoughtfulness when he risked his life to save the kids in the fire. On page 91 paragraph 8 Ponyboy said,”“I’ll get them don’t worry”I started for a dead charge for the church.” I think that this shows the reader that Ponyboy wants to put other people before himself and save the kids from the fire. Ponyboy is cleary thoughtful because he was willing to die to save other people's lives and he is willing to lose his own life. Ponyboy is caring because he was willing to spend his time doing stuff for other people and he is
There were constant fights either between family or friends that affected the way Ponyboy, let alone the whole gang, grew up-not to mention how they connect to the poem’s themes.“‘Hey, grease,’ one said in an over-friendly voice. ‘We’re gonna do you a favor, greaser. We’re gonna cut all that long greasy hair off.’” Excerpts like these are evidence that Ponyboy was never accepted by other crowds, let alone his older brother Darry. Hints are dropped, like those within the poem explaining how the life was “not as ideal” as the Socs on the other side of town. During his youth, Ponyboy had to undergo some very painstaking experiences including the loss of his parents and the emotional complications within his siblings. In my opinion, the quote from “Poverty and Wealth” that best symbolizes Ponyboy’s maturity levels increasing and how he learns to deal with the struggles but still push through with a positive attitude.“His wants were simple, and simple his creed, To trust God fully: it served his need,” Almost afraid of what was to come from the future,
At the beginning of the book, Ponyboy is in intelligent, young teen, but he lacks the perspective to understand the environment around him. He can only see his side of the story and fails to understand why others act the way they do. The first example of this is his oldest brother Darry. He thinks Darry hates him because he is always giving Ponyboy a hard time about his lack of common sense, his grades,...
Ponyboy might be considered a hero because,he had no hesitation getting out of the car and going into a burning church to save a few kids.He puts others before himself and he cares about other people. He went into a burning church knowing that he could get hurt or even die but he still went anyway ¨Dally was standing there, and when he saw me he screamed,¨For pete's sake, get outa there! That roofs gonna cave in any minute.Forget those blasted kids!¨I didn't pay any attention, although pieces of the old roof were falling to close for comfort.¨ You can see from reading this quote from the book that Ponyboy is considered a hero because he didn't care about what Dally was telling him,he only cared about getting those kids out of the burning church. This is just a few examples of why Ponyboy could be considered a hero.
THE OUTSIDERS: Choose one character in the story and consider how he or she compares to a real person that you know [ANALYSIS]
The reader can see how much Ponyboy values his relations with his friends. Ponyboy does not like the gang to be distant. Through the story the reader will see what the best character trait for ponyboy is that he is loyal.
He is himself, and this allows him to be special. In one instance, Ponyboy causes some Soc’s to retreat by brandishing a broken piece of glass at them and threatens to split them if they don't leave. This is found in chapter 12 page 171 in the book. We can also recall how he responded to when faced with having to rescue the children from the burning church. While some might see this as an extraordinary act of bravery, especially considering Ponyboy's injuries, he is humble about the act.
John C. Maxwell once said “Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you.” This means your life comes from your specific choices. You have agency to do what you want, but what you choose to do affects you personally . The book The Outsiders , S.E. Hinton, talks all about choices. All of the many choices affected the character’s lives. In this essay, there’s many examples of when Ponyboy took the time to get to know people who were different than him and changes his perspective on them. This book talks about the main theme of judging people. Just because someone doesn’t look, act ,or think like you, doesn’t mean you should judge them, especially if you don’t truly know them.
First, In the story The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton the character Ponyboy Curtis has many strengths. A couple of them are that he is tough. He is tough because when the Soc’s pinned him on the way home from the movies he was strong and didn’t just let them kill him he fought back and got away but still got caught. Another is that he is respectful, he is respectful
