Right now in the novel, I feel really bad for Kino and Juana. All they wanted was for Coyotito to get better from his scorpion bite, but the greedy doctor won’t help them! It makes me mad that the doctor is so focused on his wealth and status that he won’t help a family in need. I feel like the whole neighborhood is not helping them even, everyone in the neighborhood just stares, and listens to Kino and Juana in the midst of this crisis. They do not do anything to help them, which really surprises me for when this novel takes place. I am also interested in what will happen to Kino now that he has the pearl. I assume he will go to the doctor, and ask him to heal his son. But I think the pearl might backfire on him, and actually harm him because
After finding the "Pearl of the World," Kino struggles to protect the pearl, himself, and
Social structures such as the family, the village, and the town are central to the pearl. However, the central unit, for Kino and Juana is their family. They make sacrifices for each other and their son Coyotito. Kino and Juana’s dedication towards their son Coyotito is most evident through their wish for him to “go to school” (p25) and “break out of the pot that holds” (p39) them in. Although Kino’s family life is threatened upon the discovery of the pearl, much of its damage is caused by the individualistic greed of the people surrounding them. “The doctor,” (p7) “the priest,” (p27) “the neighbors,” (p8) and “the pearl buyers” (47) all equally contribute to Kino and his family’s downfall.
The pearl, in my opinion, was not evil, it was bait. It lured bystanders in as a test. It reminds be of the trails to get to heaven; it was made to entice the greedy and selfish so they may be punished. Those who can keep away the destructive thinking of power and riches get rewarded. It was a standard to leech out the sinners.
After discovering the pearl, however, Kino begins to dream of possibilities for his family, most importantly an education for his son, which was something he previously never thought of as he considered it absolutely out of reach. His dreams gradually start becoming more and more materialistic as he stares at the pearl’s surface. Consequently, he drifts apart from his culture and family customs, he escapes town and ends up killing a man, being inherently deceived by the pearl. When he returns to the village, wrecked by the death of his son, he first offers Juana the chance to throw the pearl into the sea. This indicates that he has learned to value her sense of judgement and is, in a sense, yielding to her. But she insists on Kinoo throwing the pearl into the sea instead and that shows that she remains faithful to their previous alignment of life and as always, seek and strives s to preserve
Kino dives to the very bottom and sees a glimmer coming from an oyster, grabs it, comes up to the boat to open it and finds the pearl of the world. The news that Kino has found an immense pearl travels fast through La Paz. The doctor who refused to treat Coyotito decides to visit Kino. Kino's neighbors begin to feel bitter toward him for his good fortune, but neither Kino nor Juana realize this feeling they have engendered. Kino has no idea what to do with all the new money he has earned, but wants to send Coyotito to school.
Kino followed her and saw that she was about to give up the most amount of money Kino had ever seen. Kino punches his wife and kicks her once she’s on the ground in anger. Kino then goes and walks on the path on page 61 and is mugged by anonymous jealous people. The first thing Kino does when he gets up is say is the pearl’s gone. All he cared about was that pearl evewhen his wife was beat up.
After all Kino finally decides to get rid of the Pearl “ Kino drew back his arm and flung the Pearl with all his might… they saw a little splash in the distance(89-90). He realized that his son's life is more important than the pearl. He did what he should have done from the beginning throw the pearl out. Materialism and greed can take over someone's life before they even realize it in the end your family is always
I’ll be playing the wife of the rapist before her husband comes home. Her monologue positions the audience to feel sympathy for the character as she decides whether to stay in the marriage or run away from it. She is a loyal wife to her husband but she isn’t sure whether she should leave and start fresh somewhere or if she should stay and just put up with all the drama. Lady walks into the kitchen and starts making tea.
Kino's life gets ruined by the pearl, when he starts hearing the evil sound he should have thrown it away the first time. It only brought trouble and conflict to his family,
[aside] Again Olivia cannot see him, A fool in front of her. Her own kinsman. She thinks he drowned for none of hers are fools.
The pearl's evil infects Kino like a ravaged disease and consumes his mind. He starts off with good intentions, but they become twisted. He wants to sell the pearl and use the money to better his family's lifestyle. He has dreams and goals that each depends on the pearl selling for a good price. Juana sensing the evil and greed coming from Kino attempts to destroy it. Kino beats her unmercifully. "He struck her in the face and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side...He hissed at her like a snake and she stared at him with wide unfrightened eyes, like a sheep before a butcher." Juana sees through the outer beauty of the pearl and knew it would destroy Kino and herself. Kino's vision from the soul becomes blurred by the possible prosperity the pearl will bring. The evil invades Kino's life as well as everyone he knows and loves.
The pearl has changed Kino from a content man to a man who is unhappy with just the love of his family. Instead he wants “stuff “ to make them happy. For instance when Kino says “ We will have new clothes. “(31). This quote explains that Kino wants to get things he does not need, but what he wants. The pearl has also imported others negatively. The pearl has ruined the life of Kino and his family. “ ‘This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us…’ “ (43). Juana has noticed that the pearl has become something much more than they can handle. It has destroyed those in its path, especially Kino. “ A dead man in the path and Kino’s knife, dark bladed beside him, convinced her.” (67). At this moment the pearl is pure evil as Kino has taken a human’s life. He and Juana know that life will never be the
The pearl has had many effects on the people off Kino’s village. Making them happy, crazy, and even blood thirsty killers. Kino only wanted to bring his family a better life.
