Pentagram

Pentagram is a word that originates from the Greek pentagrammon meaning to have five lines. This is derived from pente “five” and gramma meaning “what is written”. A pentagon is the body of the pentagram, whereas the pentagram is a five pointed star extending from a pentagon. Sometimes called the “Endless Knot”, the sides of the pentagram are interwoven, as though they were drawn with a single line instead of 5 straight lines that intersect.

Known to be used as a magical or symbolic figure of the Pythagoreans or magicians, the pentagram has a more ancient history. Roughly etched pentagrams have been found in stone caves and on ancient Babylonian clay tablets dating back to the first millennium B.C.E. This can be done with a ritual tool, such as the athame, a wand, or just by using a finger in the air. The pentacle is drawn by visualizing a single line by starting at the top and bringing it down to the bottom left. Next, bring it up diagonally to the right, and straight across to the left. Finally, bring it diagonally down to the bottom right and back up to the top where the pentagram was started.

When a pentagram is drawn with the point up, the pentagram represents the importance of mind over matter, even a suggestion of obtaining secret knowledge. The pentagram is one of the most widely used and powerful symbols of the Neo-pagans and the practitioners of Wicca and it is often drawn on to magical tools to increase the magickal properties of the tool and connect to the element of earth.
