In the article “What Makes a Hero?” by Phillip Zimbardo, the author expresses that everyone has the ability to help others, whether it is a small deed like leading a guiding hand to someone who needs it, or it can be as intense as pulling someone out of a burning car. The writer attempts to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing by stating,  “Few people do evil and fewer act heroically.” (Zimbardo). In addition, heroes act not for the fame or the money, but for their own satisfaction. “It’s not easy to be a hero. You do it because of what you believe, not because of what other people deserve.” Anyone can face a challenge or a hardship. But what makes a true hero is how the person takes on the challenge. Often, heroes show feats of ingenuity and acts of bravery. Two heroes that acted during the American Civil Rights Movement, were Martin Luther King Jr, and Rosa Parks. A hero is a person who has demonstrated behaviors to ethically receive our appreciation and respect. A hero is an ordinary person who finds the strength within themselves to persevere and undergo hardships and calamity.

As Novalis, a famous German poet and philosopher once stated, “A hero is one who knows how to hang on one minute longer.” A hero does not show worry, but pushes through and can be courageous for only a little while longer than everyone else. Because heroes are people who put others before themselves, they must go above and beyond and not worry about their own safety.

Courage and selflessness are words that describe heroes. Mundane people can be heroes when they have enough perseverance to do extraordinary tasks. They sacrifice their needs for others. Frederick Douglass was a brave, honorable and bold abolitionist, his heroism was impactful and it changed the mindset of many people.

Heroes are not people who think about themselves. Instead, they are people who do things they think are best for their country. Heroes are not in it for themselves, they are guided by what they think is right. To be a hero, one needs to be selfless, courageous and strong. They need selflessness to be humble and put others needs before their own. These qualities truly show the real heroes in both literature and in today’s world.

Heroes always put their best foot forward in order to aid those in need. A few examples of people who have done this, are Abraham Lincoln, the man with the red bandana, and Frederick Douglass. First, Lincoln is a hero because of how he used his position of power to help those who require it. In White House Funeral Sermon for Abraham Lincoln by Dr. Phineas D. Gurley, Gurley mentions his virtues and how greatly they helped everyone. Gurley talks about the impact of how he made a great effort to help free those who were enslaved. Another demonstration of heroes trying their hardest to help in a difficult situation, is the man in the red bandana. The man in the red bandana, or Welles Crowther, saved people without hesitation after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. Heroes rise and act in times of need, even if obstacles may stand in the way. For instance, Frederick Douglass an abolitionist, and Vincent Ardolino, a man who rescued others at the BOATLIFT of 9-11 both acted to help during a time when heroes were needed even though obstacles stood in their way. Frederick Douglas’ feelings towards rising and speaking against slavery are described in his autobiography The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Douglass stated, “ The truth was I felt myself a slave, and the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down.” Frederick, although he felt unworthy, stood that day and spoke as a symbol against slavery. Frederick Douglas’ actions led him to be “engaged in pleading the cause of my brethren” from then on, and to be seen as a hero until today. Likewise, Vincent Ardolino is a man who acted when he saw others in need to be rescued off the island during the chaos of 9-11.

Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is not the urge to surpass others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Someone who stays strong in their heart and shows selflessness towards others even though he or she could be in the risk of personal risk and danger is what makes a true hero. Anyone could be recognized and admired as a hero if they could, but there's a big gap in front of that because it adds on with the hero showing compassion in spite of the obstacles that they are faced with. It could make someone more heroic than he or she ever was by just showing selflessness to others. Clara Barton put herself in danger to treat the wounded during the Civil War and not only that, but she founded what is known today the American Red Cross (History.com). Harriet Tubman helped many slaves to freedom in the north, also placing herself in peril. (History.com). Florence Nightingale, who was a nursing innovator did the similar as Clara Barton, but during the Crimean War (History.com & Biography.com). All of these women stressed the idea of helping others before they did so for themselves, but that took bravery to do so. Whether the challenges that a hero has to endure, a true hero puts others before themselves no matter what the position he or she is set in.

Heroes have achieved many feats that support the belief of a greater good and expressing valor and selflessness through the ages. There are fictional or real life accounts that have recognized these men and women for their vigor and marked them as heroes due to their events of success and motives of committing the heroic deeds. Yet there are copious amounts of people who have sacrifice themselves for a greater good but they have been lost through time even if their actions were prosperous or doomed in the end with a valiant purpose. They are unsung heroes who committed the actions based on their inner fire of what is right or honorable or rather than the fame they hope to achieve from those acts. The world or a populous may not know of their actions, but the actions and beliefs of an individual or group can entitle them of being hero-like without the necessity of recognition and success. They have lost their lives or a part of themselves to a cause based on righteousness rather than self-gain. They presented selfless heroism rather than the the intention to receive praise from the victories. Sacrifice contributes more to Heroism because the individual invested his or her own determination, valor and accepting the opportunity to risk their self-health (physical or psychological) based on great intentions rather than reaping the accolades of committing good deeds.

Patty Jenkins once said, “It’s not easy to be a hero. You do it because of what you believe, not because of what other people deserve.” This means that you can’t just one day decide to be a hero, that hero’s know what is right and they don’t care who deserves it or not. In their minds everyone deserves to be saved. Although heroes care for others, put others before themselves, they are not always fearless when looking danger in the face.

A hero is selfish if they do not sacrifice for their task. Even if they have done something good for another person, they can’t be a hero because they didn’t jeopardize themselves for the good of others. To be sacrificial, one has to expose themselves for the well-being of others. Some could argue that you could save other people without making an actual sacrifice and that the person is still helped or saved but then the person was only lucky to be helped or saved and that does not make the other person a hero. Harriet Tubman is a good example of sacrificing for the good of others, “…Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, then immediately returned to Maryland to rescue her family. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other slaves to freedom.” (p1, ¶3) as stated by Wikipedia editors, 2014. Heroes have many goals and many challenges, but whether they are successful or not is a whole different story. Always trying their best to achieve their certain goal and risking to help others is what heroes live for. For example, during the attacks of 9/11, boat drivers such as were rescuing people from the island of Manhattan in New York. There were thousands upon thousands of people, but with enough support, the boat drivers were able to rescue everybody. Vincent Ardolino, one of the boat drivers during the 9/11 boatlift, said in the documentary “Boatlift” that he tells his children to “never go through life saying you should have. If you want to do something, do it.” This mindset is what all heroes should adopt for the future. These people may not have the most difficult job in the world, but they carry out small challenges with a lot of passion. Likewise, were the heroes during Hurricane Harvey and Irma, two very devastating Hurricanes that have costed the USA many lives. Many people from outside of the area have done countless things to help like rescue people with their boats, donate money, and help rebuild. Many of these heroes have risked their lives and struggled on for the greater good.
