The Politics Of Civic Engagement

With civic engagement development being initiated nationwide, we must attempt to understand citizenship in today’s world. Citizenship is often a misunderstood concept.

Engaging with my community is important because I been helping people volunteer around me since middle school and continuing in high school because of the help I received in elementary. I wanted to help the elementary children because of all the support and help that I received. Helping them makes me think of when I needed help and received through people. I mostly helps with volunteering around with little kids in different elementary schools at my school district. I want them to be safe and help them during their hard times. I wanted to help people because I wanted people to understand what they are learning and have a good education. When I’m volunteering I help keep the children safe and cheer them on when they are competing.

Community impacts our daily lives. It brings us together and it provides the support we need through tough situations. Every day we engage with our community whether it is with a person from the community or with service to help the community flourish. It is important to better ourselves as a community member or a neighbor because a community needs strong members to flourish. To become a strong community member, one must practice all types of altruism, give more than what is required, and work together with members of the community.

For the assignment civic engagement, I volunteer in four projects Temple, Bernie Sanders, Elementary School, and VTA transport to complete my 16 hours community service. However being a part of these amazing projects, I learn and experience a lot of things that how to interact, encourage, and help other peoples.

I would like to nominate Dr. Johnson for the Civic Engagement Award based on her inspiring vision of service in Women’s and Gender Studies. Most recently, she organized the 7th biennial Bodies of Knowledge Symposium on the topic of queer kinship and queer community building. Her work in LGBT programming on campus is important for students and community members who identify as LGBT and for others who want to know more about it, especially in South Carolina where this identity can be controversial. The observations talked about in Putman’s “Bowling Alone: America’s Declining Social Capital,” have shown a decrease in community involvement and social interaction. In the twentieth century there has been noticeable declines in community involvement. My project relates to the course objectives twelve and seven this is because it talks about inclusion, in which all types of diversity are respected, appreciated, and valued in America. As well as the vital role of the people in creating and maintaining a society through voluntarism and civic engagement, a role that can complement and replace the role of the government ensuring the well-being of society. Civic engagement involves “working to form a distinction at intervals the civic life of one’s community and developing the combination of information, skills, values and motivation to form that distinction. It suggests that promoting the quality of life throughout a community, through every political and non-political process” (Erlich, 2000). Civic engagement includes every paid and unpaid style of political policy, environmentalism, and community and repair. Volunteering is one kind of civic engagement. Many of the nation’s volunteer’s group are youngsters. 59 percent of teenagers in the U.S. are recorded for their participation in youth volunteer. Most youth volunteers do so out of selflessness and by wanting to make a difference throughout other individual’s lives.

For a few days after I moved to DC, I wondered what actions I can do to illustrate the concept of “civic engagement.” I thought it was a broad term, maybe because I was not familiar with the American term. However, when I took the time to look over the exceptional amount of things I learned and done in Washington DC, it was easy to write this paper.

During the last century, American involvement toward civic are falling into a slump. This could mark a new era of history for democracy but the question is what happens when only about 5% of American will take part in civic. Since World II American civic engagement are greater and they are more likely to trust their government and community but over time the people trust is beginning fall. What could have caused this trust issue? Well, the problem here is over time the people begin to see a lot lies the government feed them, for an example, the Vietnam war was one of the reason that caused American reduce their trust the government as bomb the country with a lot of civilian casualties but the government only showed American the shooting part.

Civic involvement and citizenship are common terms used interchangeably in order to describe individual responsibility in society. However, upon further evaluation, both words address different aspects of society itself. Citizenship can be understood as certain obligations, liberties, and privileges embodied by an individual; and civic involvement is the activities associated with those responsibilities. The following definition summarizes the broader scope of citizenship and civic involvement assumed in A Short History of Progress by Ronald Wright. In this book, Wright describes the progress of citizenship, and the perception that mankind gradually improves over time.

Being an active citizen is something that everyone in the United States is required to be, yet not everyone actually is one. Many people may believe that just voting is enough to be a good citizen, but voting is actually the least of their duties. Citizens have a set of rights and responsibilities, including the right to participate in decisions that affect public welfare. Being an active citizen means that people get involved in their local communities and democracy at all levels, from their town to nationwide activity. This can be volunteering to clean up the park or street, or educating students on democratic values, skills and participation. Active citizenship is a mixture of knowledge, attitude, skills and actions that aim to contribute to building and preserving a democratic society. When citizens speak up about problems in their communities, public officials take notice and may take action to answer their concerns, which empowers the citizens of the community.
