Description: Immediately catching the eye when on looks upon this poster of The Conjuring is a a dark noose contrasted against a lighter colored and overcast sky. The noose is in the center of the poster hanging from a dead and decrepit limb that is protruding from a dead tree full of blacks and browns. There is a pile of dead leaves resting underneath the tree and through further observation, there seems to be a silhouette of a woman hanging from the aforementioned noose. Slightly left of the noose directly in the middle of the page is an old mansion resting in between a plethora dead bushes, trees and some weeds. The mansion 's front, sides, and back are all white while the roof has black shingles accompanied with two tan chimneys and a dormer. The mansion is sitting upon a lush, mist covered green yard of short grass with dead leafs scattered throughout. On the bottom left side of the page there is some small white text informing viewers of who is presenting the poster and movie. This is a James Wan directed movie and produced by New Line Cinema. On the topmost part of the screen there is a line of dark text telling viewers that James Wan, the director of The Conjuring, also directed the movies Saw and Insidious which are two critically acclaimed movies. Under that text, still in the middle of the page and above the aforementioned tree limb, is the title of the movie written in large, bold, and black colors, The Conjuring, directly underneath the title is some
Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is as a wonderful example of the gothic horror genre. It was not until the rediscovery of the story in the early 1970’s that “The Yellow Wallpaper” was recognized as a feminist indictment of a male dominated society. The story contains many typical gothic trappings, but beneath the conventional façade hides a tale of repression and freedom told in intricate symbolism as seen through the eyes of a mad narrator.
Inception is a science fiction thriller film, directed by Christopher Nolan, which describes the complex idea of entering dreams. A cast of character are presented near the middle of the poster in an environment where the town curving upwards in the background, displaying that the film will defy logic. The poster directly shows a scene from the movie, which grabs the attention of the viewer and makes them curious. The repetition of the cast holding guns shows that there will be action and violence within the movie. The bright red colors contrast the plain colors that are presented throughout, adding suspense and tension to the situation. Furthermore, the lines “Your mind is the scene of the crime” is written. This gives a dark tone to the situation,
“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman takes the form of journal entries of a woman undergoing treatment for postpartum depression. Her form of treatment is the “resting cure,” in which a person is isolated and put on bed rest. Her only social interaction is with her sister-in-law Jennie and her husband, John, who is also her doctor. Besides small interactions with them, most of the time she is left alone. Society believes all she needs is a break from the stresses of everyday life, while she believes that “society and stimulus” (pg 347, paragraph 16) will make
In the short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author presents a controversial story about a woman’s mental conditions and her life within her current home. Throughout the story symbols arise to express how the woman progressively gets worse when it comes to her mental condition. This is shown through the animation of the wallpaper that is in her bedroom and the reasons she feels like she has to express her feelings through writing instead of verbally. The different symbols used in the story by Gilman reveals changes in the narrator by expressing the pressure felt by women from their significant other during the early to mid 1900’s.
2. The poster has both denotation and connotation signs. The movie title is on the top part of the movie poster in black and white. This indicates a big plot of the movie where white people ‘get’ into the black people’s bodies and black people are ‘out’ of control of their bodies. Underneath the title, there are some sentences saying, “Just because you are invited, doesn’t mean you are welcome.” This explains
Feminism is considered an important aspect of “The Mark on the Wall” by Virginia Woolf and also “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Both short stories were set in the 1800s during the time where feminism was fought for since women were denied education, could not own their own property, and were expected to care for their husbands and children with complete disregard to themselves. The conventional 19th century norm had a rigid distinction between the “domestic” functions of the female and the “active” work of the male; this ensured women remained second class citizens. In “The Mark on the Wall,” the manly figure reveals the mark on the wall was in reality a snail. The woman doesn’t get up to see if the mark was really a snail, but instead, accepts what her husband says. The man character forces the woman to see reality the way he does, even if she doesn’t want to. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” gender division has the effect of keeping women in a childish state of ignorance and prevents their full development. John’s assumptions of his superiority lead him to misjudge, patronize, and dominate his wife, all in the name of “helping” her. The narrator is reduced to acting like a child, unable to stand up for herself without seeming unreasonable or disloyal. Woolf and Gilman use madness to define an essential part of the reality of women in the 1800s.
As human beings, we play the cards that are dealt to us in this world. In life, every person goes through their individual ups and downs and occasionally may break down to the extent of not knowing what to do with oneself. In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” which takes place in the late 1800s, focuses on the first person narrator who is an infatuated woman. The disheartening story concentrates on a woman who is suffering from postpartum depression, and as well had mental breakdowns. The narrators husband John, moves her into a home isolated in the country where he wants her to “rest” and get better from her illness. During the course of being confined in the room with the wallpaper, she learns new
Charles Waddell Chesnutt is an African American writer who writes many novels and short stories about African American superstitions and folklore of the south in “The Conjure Woman”. “The Conjure Woman” is a collection of folk tales that explore complex issues of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War. Chesnutt writes these stories in vernacular forms to represent the oral act of storytelling and express Chesnutt’s black identity and cultural heritage of African American people. Chesnutt's folktales are narrated either to teach the readers lessons or to represent how African American people are treated by whites as second class citizens. The following essay concentrates on superstitions and folklore in Chesnutt’s stories, and how Chesnutt uses African American folklore
This is a representation of the coldness of the character that is behind the window, and is blurred within the fog. The use of mise-en-scene is also used in the background that you can see behind the window which is of a forest. This is determined by the clustered trees that are crowded behind the character at the front. This is a cliche in horror films as it is a setting that a lot of horror films use, as a forest is a place that has a creepy atmosphere when dark and is a vulnerable place to be, as it is unrecognizable to you. The use of lighting is used to silhouette the character, this makes her the main focus of attraction. It also blocks out any view of anything else behind them and therefore forcing the viewer to look at the character. This is effective in asserting the audience that this is a horror film. The last use of mise-en-scene that is used in order to make it more bright and to make it stand out is the use of costume. The use of costume isn't fully focused on this poster but it is helpful in finishing off the full image of the atmosphere that it is trying to create. The T-shirt is dirty and torn, which can represent a struggle that it took for the character to come this way.
The movie poster that I have chosen is Maleficent, produced by Walt Disney and is released in year 2014. Movie poster is very important as it is considered as an advertisement for a particular movie. With containing the powerful visual elements of the movie such as the famous actors, movie title and attractive image, it can easily grab the audience’s attention. Some of the movie posters may include the main actor’s name as well. These visuals are vital to convey impactful messages to the audience and persuade them to watch. Maleficent is an example of using actress’s name to attract audience. The main actress name, Angelina Jolie is written in an elegant and simple black capital letters in serif typeface and is placed in upper part of the poster.
In the movie of The Conjuring, in certain instances it foreshadows a witch which is considered as a dark presence. This movie poster is effective in introducing or raising awareness of the way is being presented by telling the readers that this film is based on a true story and by showing readers that it will have a mysterious person in search. In the movie, there is a new family of seven, five daughters and their pet dog that moves into an unfrequented farmhouse which took place in the '70s. Strange things have been happening to the house as well with the family, they call investigators to look at the house to find out why weird things have been happening. The reason for the dark presence, appearance in the house is because someone had hung themselves at the house so unfortunately the house is haunted without the new family members being aware of it. The poster for the movie The Conjuring foreshadows a mysterious dark presence not seen by everyone through the specific placement of the shadow, the color scheme, composition and spatial order.
Another major thing you look at when analyzing a poster is its ethos, pathos, and logos. This poster does a good job of appealing to all of these. Its ethos or in other words its credibility is shown in the fine print at the bottom and right above the main title. Above the main title you at the bottom of the poster you see Disney, which is a very credible company that is known for making very good movies that tend to appeal to the modern generation. When you look at the fine print at the very bottom you can make out a few of the actors names and the names of people who helped produce the movie. Most
From trippy patterns to wildly vibrant typography, the psychedelic art style was absolutely endless. The unique art movement was at its best from 1966 to 1972. Although there were many memorable artists at this time, Wes Wilson was known for being the “father of the 60’s rock concert posters.” Psychedelic art was just about everybody’s obsession in the 1960’s because of its unorthodox style and artists that were a part of it.
