Minimum wage has always been changing through out the history countries. This has always effected all of the citizens in that country. It will always be up to debate on what should be done with it. Should be it be raised, or should it be lowered. Here is a brief summary of five articles from different sources that will go over facts and different views of what should be done with the minimum wages.
The first article was ABOVE THE BARE MINIMUM: But at what cost? by Marina Krakovksy was going over the ideas behind several groups in the United States towards raising the minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour through out the United States. The beginning of the article discusses the what exactly is going on and what bills have been passed to increase the minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour. Shortly after talking about what is going on in the country there is a short portion that brings up the positives of raising the minimum wages to such a high number. For the rest of the article Marina breaks down all of the negatives of raising the minimum wages. This article focuses on if we should raise the minimum wage and the conclusion that came out was that it wasn’t not a good idea to raise the minimum wage this drastically. The next article was The case for $15: What research on the minimum wage does and does not tell us is breaking down all of facts that have been said about raising the minimum wage and taking a view of the situation. The article takes a look at previous minimum
Rex Huppke, a writer for the Chicago tribune, writes about how raising the minimum wage may not be as positive to the society and economy as Americans are lead to believe. After interviewing many specialist and professors concerning this subject, he concludes that despite what other newspapers are saying raising the minimum wage could damage the economy. As an effect of what the media is saying this article was written to inform the public of the real cost of raising minimum wage.
Rex Huppke, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, deftly discusses the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage in the last of a two-week series in “In the Minimum Wage Debate, Both Sides Make Valid Points”. Although I am for raising the minimum wage, Huppke’s presentation of the opposite argument does make one think beyond the gut reading that everyone deserves more money. Huppke’s argument that a large number of minimum wage earners are student of the elderly leads me to believe that a tier of wages would take care of the issue. For example, anyone working less than 35 hours a week would be paid at a certain rate; with full time getting an increase. I am not concerned by the argument that a higher minimum wage leads to lay-offs or price increases when most products sold in America are manufactured by cheap foreign labor. There is already a huge profit margin that could sustain such an increase. Rather than give discounts on goods and services, thus preventing employees from exercising the right to shop, stay or eat wherever the employee chooses, these employers trap workers into giving back the very money they have “slaved” for.
The increase of minimum wage could lead to a better quality of life. Many had lived barely paying for the minimal necessities such as shelter, food, water, clothes, etc. The topic of
The issue of raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour is a heavily debated topic. Both sources against or in favor of the minimum wage refer to a “growing gap” between low-income workers and high-income earners. Sources against the minimum wage believe raising it will increase this gap, whereas those in favor of the minimum wage believe it will decrease this gap. The arguments in favor of the minimum wage rely mostly on ethical beliefs, such as “pay should reflect hard work,” to advance the need for a higher minimum wage. Whereas, the arguments against the minimum wage use quantitative data like unemployment rates and economic analysis involving supply and demand to undermine the policy behind the minimum wage. Ultimately, the
There has been many conversations about what the positive impacts can come to America 's lowest income workers as a result of an increase in the minimum wage, and there has also been equally as many discussions over the negative effects the increase can have on similar people. This paper’s purpose is to combine each viewpoint and objectively analyze the arguments for and against an increase in the minimum wage. I will first discuss the benefits for an increase, then the disadvantages, and in the last paragraph, I will
This paper will explore the pros and cons of raising the current minimum wage to $15.00. It will start with the history and reasons for the minimum wage. It will cite the positive aspects for raising it, as well as the negative consequences of that action. It will then touch on actual cases presently, within the U.S. economy. Finally, I will present my conclusion.
Our entire society in the United States is complicating whether or not our nation should raise the federal minimum wage. Ranging from researchers who have been studying this incompatible topic throughout their entire lives to amateurs who simply expose their opinions without any logical reasoning to the public are still not able to come to an agreement for a stable minimum wage. Many citizens may assume that increasing the minimum wage, $7.25, an hour, by a couple dollars may not make a significant impact to our economy. However, there still coexists a complex reason behind this whole topic that is currently disabling our society to contemplate on a solution. Generally, most traditionalists who believe that increasing the minimum wage may hurt the young and unskilled workers in an economical perspective. On the other hand, a vast majority of researchers may believe that this opportunity wouldn’t kill jobs and may even give the economy a boost by allowing more low-income workers to spend more on necessities. This controversial issue may be the only fire that will never die out in the United State’s economical history.
Since 1938, when the minimum wage was first introduced (at a rate of $0.25 an hour), the federal minimum wage has increased 22 times. The minimum wage is the salary floor, or the lowest possible rate that employers can pay employees.
Minimum Wage Minimum wage has plagued a majority of teens and young adults for years and has never truly let up on them. Minimum wage is a huge part of how Americans live our lives. Many sources used in this paper were U.S News Articles and get information from a chief economist. Minimum wage should be increased because people want to have better lives than they have now which means that they are really fighting big government reps because they need to get better support from people to help increase minimum wage for their own lives. Minimum wage affects many Americans and how they can continue to make a living or how they live their lives.
The article chosen for the paper is called The Argument Against Raising Minimum Wage, published on the Chicago tribune website. The audience attended for this article is for working class people who would be effect by the raise of the minus wage. This article is also useful to the people who have little experience in the work place or who do not have a
In 2008 the United states came into recession due to many factors. Based on the article, the minimum wage should be raised. Ever since that meeting many economists have proposed different plans to solve this issue. One of these solutions for this particular issue is to raise the minimum wage. This would affect the economy, workers, and job growth which will follow in need of help. This plan would help, but there has been research that has gone against the solution stating that there is more cost than the overall benefit. There are still discussions to this day for if which they should raise the minimum wage.
Understanding the potential of an increase in today’s minimum wage is the key to understanding the above statement. As a financial mechanism in American society, the minimum wage has helped to sustain generations of workers. Yet, there are two sides to the debate over minimum wage increases. One side—the proponents—feel strongly that low-income workers need some incentive to earn a sufficient living. Conversely, opponents believe that changing the minimum wage does not always help workers and can
The article I have been working on this week is about minimum wage. My article informs its readers that the minimum wage may be raised by 2020. It also tells why states have already taken actions into there own hands by voting for the minimum to be $9.75 in Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Alaska. The Last thing it talks about is the possible outcome of raising the federal minimum wage. There has been tons of debate about this current situation in the U.S. One side wants the minimum to be raised and the other sides wants it to stay the same. I am going to give you a view of both sides so you can understand where they come from.
This is an article that talks about why the minimum wage is an important part of society. It gives a few good arguments including the fact that companies should have the responsibility to give back and help take care of
