Francis (1976), as cited by Bekhet, Zauszniewski, & Nakhla (2008) defines loneliness as an unwelcomed emotional state, feeling of lack of companionship and a wish for interaction that is different from the one being experienced. Bekhet et al. (2008) defined loneliness as the experience of isolation, disorientation, or “lostness”. It is an experience that occurs when a persons network of social relationships are deficient either qualitatively or quantitatively (Potter, Perry, & Potter, 2010).

Social isolation can have a significant impact on mental health. The studies done by the authors, show that those who are socially isolated experience more stress and cognitive decline. Cacioppo, Hawkely, Norman and Bernston (2011) and Hawkley and Cacioppo (2009) show that the lack of consistent human contact sometimes due to the unwillingness of others to befriend the mentally ill. Social isolation is both a cause and an effect of mental distress. When the person isolates more, they face more mental distress.

This unit aims to provide the learner with knowledge of the main forms of mental health problems according to the psychiatric classification system. Learners also consider the strengths and limitations of this model and look at alternative frameworks for understanding mental distress. Victor becomes terror-stricken by the creature due to it’s hideousness, and he flees from his home, leaving the creature alone and isolated. The creature becomes very lonely and angry toward his creator. He then vows to make Victor’s life miserable for creating, abandoning, and isolated him. The word isolation is a term that is used to describe someone as being confined without much, or any contact. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the two characters, Crooks and Curley's wife had isolation forced on them throughout the entire course of the novel.
