What is realism? “Realism is interest in or concern for the actual or real, as distinguished from the abstract, speculative, etc” (The). The word originated from France in 1794, it opposed idealism in not only philosophy but also art (The). The actual realism movement was basically delayed from when realism originated; the realism movement started around the 1840s (“Realism Movement”). A realist looks at things/ situations through a realistic version compared to a average person who might sugar coat things. An example would be a regular person would look at a glass of water and say, “the glass is half full”, while a realist would say, “the glass is half empty”. It’s little things like this that realist take into consideration.
Realism was a way to answer back for the people disapproving romanticism; all of my information is credited to Lorkowski. People believed that is a sensational event occurred, an object of perception is just a mental thing. If something was unobserved due to it being a past experience, it was considered not real. People thought if they looked at the positive claims then that would be justifiable. If something happened that was not caused rationally then it was thought to be a belief, not real. Believed realism was defended and revealed through natural causes and theology. When did realism begin? Realism began in the 1840s and ended in the 1880s (“Realism Movement”).
