Philosophy, according to Oxford Dictionary, is the study of the general and fundamental nature of reality and language. Therefore, philosophy is an understanding of ourselves and the world around us, it is the knowledge one is willing to attain simply for the sake of knowing and being aware.
Literally meaning ‘love of wisdom’, philosophy is very significant in our lives as it encourages one to better understand themselves through questioning and look past what one has been told in order to attain greater knowledge. This further leads one to be humble, honest and think critically. Overall, philosophy enables one to grow and develop as a person. Socrates attempts to prove the Oracle wrong by questioning fellow Athenians, but he finds no one who harbors true knowledge, instead he found an abundance of ignorance (20e-21e, Apology).Through this method Socrates realized that he himself is wise simply because he knows that he really knows very little, he therefore finds and understands himself and those around him. We further see him referring to himself as a “gadfly” as he tries to not only increase his knowledge but also urges his fellow Athenians to do so. Philosophy is therefore quite significant today as it not only refers to understanding ourselves, but also encouraging others understand and question themselves. Studying the works of Plato and the views of Socrates has made me aware of a higher purpose which may exist as the soul may truly be immortal. This has allowed me to expand my view and look into possibilities which cause me to question myself and be confident in my reasoning which in turn allows me to effectively communicate my thoughts as I feel confident In the conclusion I reach by reasoning. Thus, philosophy is significant for us today as it allows one to not only think, but effectively communicate with others. We see Socrates himself having a great amount of control over his communication, he easily conveys his views by use of simple language simply due to philosophy and the belief he has in his understanding.
