When I began this essay I felt helpless to the thought of promoting Americanism, with me being a normal fourteen year old girl with no money and social status. I then, and I shamefully admit, googled what Americanism is, and how I can promote it. There was nothing relevant to the essay, so I gave up on writing the essay. It didn’t occur to me what Americanism felt like until the Veteran's Day program today. During the program, I felt true Americanism. I pondered how I could promote Americanism, and many ideas appeared. Some ideas were adventurous, but I also had practical ideals, like supporting the troops and helping charities. Americanism isn’t about doing flashy things to look good, it’s doing for America, because you genuinely love America.
America is a gorgeous country, from her tall rocky mountains to her marvelous oceans. America has fought through the worst of battles, but she always comes out triumphant. America is a place where many individuals call home. She is a symbol of hope, acceptance, and new life. For years, people have been coming to her borders, looking for safety. America is an example to the world, of what a country should be to her people. America holds history, shows the present, and predicts the future. America is always moving forward; she is never content to stand still. However, America could not make all these changes by herself; it is her people that call themselves Americans that make her so great. American is an extremely generalized word. What makes
By late the nineteenth century the world was in an Age of Imperialism. The foremost European powers were all competing and swiftly increasing their territorial claims. Americans have always felt the desire to grow and expand the United States, they ultimately proved that with Manifest Destiny, when they settled from the east to the west coast. The idea of expansion overseas was something not new to the United States. The war against Mexico had allowed the United States to be carried into the Pacific and the issuing of the Monroe Doctrine allowed the United States to expand their sphere influence well beyond the Caribbean and into Latin America. American Historian Howard Zinn (1980) says that the Monroe Doctrine was, “Issued in 1823 when the countries of Latin America were winning independence from Spanish control, it made it plain to European nations that the United States considered Lation America its sphere of influence” (p. 297). Also, the very idea of imperialism is deep rooted and is expressed through that very ideal of Manifest Destiny. Bowles (2013) states that, “Many believed it was God 's plan for the United States to control the continent from sea to shining sea” (p. 8). With the outbreak of the Civil War, the idea of expansion and Manifest Destiny would be nonexistent, but this very idea of expansion outside the continent would return into the hearts of many American politicans and leaders at the end of the nineteenth century.
In today's world there is one thing that can be found across the globe. This thing is highly influential, loved by many, and of of the most innovative things to ever be seen. What is this thing? It is America. The modern world would not be the same without it. But what does it mean to be American? To be an American, you must follow one principle: you must chase the American dream. Being American is not about being successful or even having money. It is the simple concept of chasing the American dream not succeeding in achieving it. This essay will explain the American dream and how it relates to the American identity in three ways: Through classic American literature, a study of historical documents, and a close look
What does it mean to be American? It is a privilege to be American because I know that I am safe from the things that plague the minds of people living in other places and I have the right to vote and be free. Some of the ways that I represented these main ideals and feelings on my collage was by adding words like Proud, Safe, and Religious Freedom and by adding things like the I voted sticker and the words I’m Free. I featured pictures from different American patriotic holidays, quotes, important documents and songs, and pieces from our money and absurd measurement systems. Us Americans like to be unique, so we try to set ourselves apart with inventions such as the pickup truck, backwards baseball hat, and air conditioner, which I included
Many people associate the word “genocide” with the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. However, there is a particular genocide much more severe than the Holocaust, the American Indian genocide. It is roughly estimated that ten million Native Americans died due to European contact. Many documents attempt to effectively recount the experiences of the Native Americans and provide accurate information pertaining to their cultures, but the reading that best does this is chapter one of America’s History by James Henretta et al. This reading encompasses a variety of topics; covering Native American society prior to European contact, geography of the Americas, European hierarchy, conflict in the Old World, Native American and European empires, trading networks,
“The arc of American history almost inevitably moves toward freedom. Whether it 's Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation, the expansion of women 's rights or, now, gay rights, I think there is an almost-inevitable march toward greater civil liberties.” -James McGreevey
In this essay I'm going to talk about what it means to be an American. while explaining what it means to truly be an American. One thing about being American is being able to choose anything you want to pursue say you want to become a basketball player, musician, janitor, and many other opportunities in America an American has, being American is a lot easier then many people think but it is also hard there are challenges that come with the life of an average American just as well as there are rewards that come with it.
Chapter eight speaks of the growth of the American "empire", using political manipulation to control the south. During the reconstruction of the South, many Southerners felt less aided and crippled further due to taxes, political reformation, and of course the loss of slave labor. In terms of political corruption, the Southern states were forced back into the union but were denied representation in the Union, and used political control to rob the states financially. Taking the votes of the newly freed blacks also created a tension with white and black relations that last to even today, commonly from the Ku Klux Klan. If anything, the attempt to create stability to the war-torn South ended up making things worse in both the North and South.
Growing up in the inner city, I did not spend a great deal of my time focusing on what it meant to be an American. My daily struggles were surviving the tough streets of the city of New Orleans. In fact, my perspective of what it is to be an American was tarnished. When I think of being an American I can recall the odds of escaping poverty were huge; for one thing, the feeling
Following the Revolutionary War that lasted from 1776 to 1783, Britain’s thirteen North American colonies entered a period of great uncertainty. Finally free from the constraints of the Old World, the Founding Fathers of the United States were facing the predicament of a small population with limited resources and an unstable frontier. Though it was unclear as to how the colonies would create a New World order, most of the Founding Fathers had agreed upon a single point – that they would avoid the “balance of power” politics that had long reigned in Europe. Between the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Spanish-American War in 1898, the fledgling nation rejected “balance of power” politics and, instead, formed a federation
How would i promote americanism? I would say doing the right things in life like staying with the right people and not getting into the things you probably shouldn't get into like being over whelmed by doing drugs or smoking cigarettes. Many people in the world are always being influenced by the wrong person at the wrong time. In a way people are making our world worse and worse. Thats why we need to stay on the right path and be the person you want to be. They way that i think we all are promoting americanism is being the person you are and growing up to do things for the world and make it a better place.
This essay will examine the rise of “modern America”, there were economic, religious, and aspect of life changes took place and it was greatly changed the Americans society’s perceptions, specifically, the north and the south. The rise of “modern America” was greatly motivated immigrants to come to the United States for economic opportunity, industrialization in the North after the civil war created new businesses and job regulations, and the demand for social changes; all of these factors shaped America socially, politically, and economically.
In the music video, “The New Americana”, sung by Halsey and produced by Lido an example of people falling apart is a close up shot of the rebels all in one line and making eye contact with Halsey. In this scene she is captured by cops controlled by an all-powerful government. They force Halsey and her team to form a line so they can threaten and ask them a series of questions. The cop asks a question to one of the members and they all turn their heads to look at Halsey in succession. This example shows the audience that Halsey’s team potentially sold her out, the lack of trust they have for one another was very small leading to the betrayal of her squad. The troops pulled Halsey from the line and held her as a hostage since she is known as the leader of the Americans.
There is arguably no other international event in the world that celebrates sport more than the Olympics. The modern Olympic Games are perhaps the most prominent media event in the world capturing the attention of billions of people around the globe on a recurring basis (Walters & Murphy, 2008). Zaharopoulos (2007) noted that now that billions of people view the Olympic Games on television, it has become a shared experience of the world. During the 2012 London Olympics, an estimated 4.8 billion people, or 71% of the global population, viewed the 16-day event on television. In the U.S., NBC’s television coverage of the London Olympics became the
George Washington stands at the origins of American national history. Many Americans call him “the father of our country”. Washington commanded the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. He led the American colonists to freedom from British rule. He headed the convention that created the U.S. Constitution, as president of the republic Washington has created a basis for a federal government in which the Americans were able to find their national agreement. Despite his accomplishments as a general, political leader, businessman, and emancipator, Washington can also be defined as a family man. After marriage with Martha Dandridge Custis, he raised her two children as his very own. George Washington loved the country and its people. The country, also, loved him and respected. James Russell Lowell, an American romantic poet, wrote about Washington next:
