A common myth is that hazing is a “reality” in Frats and sororities. We've all seen it in movies and we've all heard stories from our friends. Hazing can be defined as people or individuals who are forced to do something that is psychologically, physically, or emotionally harmful or damaging (Merriam Webster). Greek organizations all over the world have taken steps in developing human rights policies and strict “anti-hazing” policies to get rid of hazing in all forms from all campuses and fraternities. In the 1980s the movie “Animal House”, became a hit. The movie’s “mocking” of the wild side of fraternity life: binge drinking, hazing, sexual harassment, wild parties, drug use, and poor living conditions, became the American public’s view of Greek life. Many television movies and shows depict the ‘crazy side,’ of Greek life and choose to show its negative side. In doing so, many movies and shows do forget to showcase the beneficial side of joining a Sorority or fraternity and show its positive
The binge drinking and partying of fraternities and sororities is now under the concern of the chapter locally and nationally. Every year there is a national hazing awareness week that every fraternity and sorority on every campus in America participates in. The only way to fix the problem is the educate people about the problem. To outweigh the heavy expense on a member’s pocket is the ability to apply for scholarships within a fraternity or sorority nationally. A Greek organization offers aid when needed and if cannot solely help look for other outlets for financial aid for a member. Organizations focus on education and give endless resources to members within the house and on campus. Members of Greek organizations have so much potential to become well-rounded individuals and being in these organizations helps them shape these potentials to achieve the most success as
One of the biggest stereotypes about being in a fraternity or sorority is that you party and drink a lot. Drinking alcohol is not a focal point of Greek life, although alcohol is at almost every social occasion in Greek life. In Blake’s article it is said that no matter what Greek organization you are a part of underage
Currently the target base is corporate Americans who are searching for a community event or hobby happening in the local area. For the fundraising, the target base is largely captive and patrons will be supportive from family member to coworkers are representing. Many patrons’ vendors will be willing to serve in any capacity and will be able to provide, however, professional services and resources and have the edge in being relatively supportive and satisfying. No other patrons are particularly expected to be present at these events at the capacity as the favorable sponsors who have a drive to serve, however, if there was the presence of another charitable organization serving the same exact purpose it may actually be beneficial in the same way. As for the psychographic make-up of the target base market, a large number of people attending these events are expected to be medium income families
The reason I would love to participate and actually be a contillionette of the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Incorporation is because I think this would be a wonderful experience to take part in. I’ve been in two previous events of the same nature so it’s not like I don’t have any experience at all. Another reason is that I actually enjoyed my past experience and actually learned a lot. I wasn’t just there to get and take. I was very happy to be there and to receive and give anything that I could. I most definitely feel like this will be the same. I’m excited that I would come to enjoy my time in this organization, the experience that will be gained, and the knowledge that will be shared, and hopefully I’ll meet new
The article by Carly Stern entitled “The Outdated Double Standard Plaguing Greek Life” has a clear theme, her title states just that. The double standard that exists in Greek Life, chapter recognized organizations, is the limitations Sorority houses have. She starts out stating that “the majority of the 26 recognized sororities are forbidden from hosting parties deserving alcohol in chapter houses… even if residents are 21”. While Fraternities are given permission to host parties by paying extra in insurance to cover the cost of damages, Sororities are not allowed to do so, many of these Sororities are not even allowed to have male guests in their home as guests. With this being the 21st century women are more proactive and independent and they are breaking barriers in academia and I the professional world, but yet under national chapters Sorority sisters are being restricted.

All members receive education about alcohol consumption through GreekLifeEDU, which is required as part of the New Member Experience. Kappa also provides the Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) to all chapters on a rotating basis. We want to generate an understanding that promotes responsible behavior as a participant, friend and sister. In an effort to minimize negative consequences, ASTP educates members about the effects of alcohol on their bodies and promotes awareness about the risks associated with drinking. Our new chapter at Bentley would receive this program within one year of establishment. If desired, ASTP could be facilitated for the entire Panhellenic community. keyinfo no. 5, continued Position Statement: Substance Abuse Kappa Kappa Gamma recognizes the inherent dangers of substance abuse.
