Anthem, the dystopian novella created by Ayn Rand, results in the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, stands-out from the rest of his society due to his higher level of intelligence and his physical attributes which differ him from the rest of the group. In the beginning, Equality is more cautious about not following the laws, and he is more discrete about it. Later on, he shows a more careless side of him, where he is not so up-tight about breaking the societies laws. His carelessness results in a new discovery, where he also does not intent on keeping as a secret from the rest of the society, even though he knows it is a transgression. In the end, his new discovery results him to be carried on into a new evil location, the Uncharted Forest, where he is all alone with the Golden One, and he renames himself “Prometheus”, and he names the Golden One “Gaea.” Equality is now known as Prometheus, and they both share interest in helping mankind, teaching those around them, and showing determination to accomplish all their set goals; Equality’s name change brought him into a name closer to his attributes. As a start, both Prometheus and Equality share an interest in making sure they assist mankind in any way possible. “Prometheus made no answer; but he had set his heart on helping mankind, and he did not give up.” (Baldwin 2). Equality relates to the character in a very personal manner. As stated in the quote, Prometheus has an interest in helping mankind, such as Equality at the end of Anthem. “And here, in this uncharted wilderness, I and they, my chosen friends, my fellow-builders, shall write the first chapter in the new history of man,” (Rand 101). Equality states he aspires to help his friends come to his new home; he says his new world is so much better. Therefore, he believes his friends should come to a better location, where they can begin their new lives together. Overall, Equality and Prometheus share the interest to help mankind, and also share many other attributes. Another common interest Prometheus and Equality share are the aspiration to teach others new ways to life. “After that, Prometheus taught them, little by little, a thousand things.” (Baldwin 2). Prometheus is proven to teach new things to
During his childhood, he was blessed with an individual spirit and the intelligence to understand the knowledge of the world. In spite of this, he reckoned his abilities as transgressions. He acknowledged that the way of life was that “Everything which comes from the many is good. Everything which comes from the one is evil” (Rand 85). Equality strives to accept the totalitarian society and consequently, he desperately struggles to disregard his abilities and subdue his desires. The grisly effects of society are portrayed immensely through the profound sense of guilt he suffers while committing the Sin of Preference. He continually recites that, “We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers are we allowed our lives. We exist through, by, and for our brothers who are the State. Amen” (Rand 21). Gradually, his aspirations contradict with the dogma of society. He discovers that he finds more joy committing the Sin of Preference rather than restraining himself from happiness, which ultimately, allows him to elude his conscious premises. Equality’s belief that “[he] [has] torn [himself] from the truth which is [his] brother men… [he] knows [this], but [he] [does] not care” (Rand 76) marks his complete triumph over collectivism. Prior to his transformation, he belonged to a society in which the Sin of Preference revoked all rights for any desire, which ultimately disallowed citizens to think for freely. If permitted to do so, no
The novel of Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, contributes to controversial subjects in society that are still relevant today. Some issues addressed by Rand in her novel include: equality, social hierarchy, individuality, and government. Throughout the duration of reading Anthem the issues in which Rand makes relevant are not obvious, but more so discussed through conflicts and situations that the main character, Equality 7-2521, encounters. Although many of the altercations that present social issues are provided by either other characters singlehandedly or by a group of the characters in alliance, some of the main issues that arise in this novel are presented within the main character himself.
Equality and Socrates underestimate it as as to empower the good. In order for them to acquire knowledge, both men must fight against the regulations of the dystopian society. Both go to the city and they come across with a society they’ve never seen before. In spite of my Anthem literary analysis, on the theme in symbolism of light, Equality has invented the lightbulb, in which he believes that it will benefit mankind. In regards to his invention, he believes that it has also become a part of him. In the novella, Rand states ‘’..We can light our tunnel, and the city, and all the cities of the world with nothing save metal and wires...the power of the sky can be made to do men’s bidding.” Light symbolizes the knowledge Equality gives to his brothers. He believes that his benefit to society will outway the transgression he has committed. Also, he believes that when shows it to the World Council, they will reject Equality’s limits of his new invention. The World of Council rejects his new technology, because they are unfamiliar with it being standardize to its society. A last reason of their rejection to Equality’s creativity would be, because they are unaware of the power it possesses. For the purpose of knowledge, in Anthem, it empowers Equality to leave society and pursue his oath of liberating his brothers and sisters from
The journey Equality goes on is literally a search for the truth. In the society Equality grew up in, he is told that questions are forbidden. However, he still had questions and wanted to learn more about the world. Eventually, he and a friend find a hole in the ground. Equality then starts to sneak out each night to do experiments to learn more. “Thus did it come to pass that each night … we, Equality
“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil… We have broken the laws” (17). Thus begins Anthem by Ayn Rand, a novella about a future collectivist society and a man named Equality 7-2521. Though the story takes place in the future, all technology that came after candles and glass has been taken away. The word “I” has ceased to exist in anyone’s vocabulary. Every person must agree on everything and feel like everyone else. To accomplish ‘cleansing’ the evils of mankind, society lead its people to believe that nothing can be done independently. The story is told through the eyes of Equality as he purposely defies the laws
To begin, Equality encourages differences and individuality. He and Liberty created new names for themselves, as to separate themselves from each other and the old society. Equality became Prometheus and Liberty became Gaea. “There was a time when each man had a name of his own to distinguish him from all other men.” (Rand 99). Once
Nowadays, individuality is perched on top of the highest pedestal. There's nothing that compares with the ability to stand apart from each other and no one dares take that away. But in Ayn Rand’s novella called Anthem, it is the complete opposite; there are numerous Councils who are in charge of everything for the people. Some of the things include, what jobs and what future people have and also they regulate intelligence and inventions. Equality 7-2521, later renamed Prometheus, is a member of this dystopian society; he isn't at all similar to his brothers. This, leads to his urge to break away from them. The Council and the society damn him because of his actions and brain, but after his escape, he realizes this damnation is hilarious because they are the damned, not him.
Equality 7-2521, who decides to change his name to Prometheus in the final chapters of the novella, had his own vision of a perfect society. Upon discovering “I” while he is reading in the house, Equality 7-2521 becomes aware that he is the center of his own universe, and nobody has control over his actions now. He says, “I understood that centuries of chains and lashes will not kill the spirit of man nor the sense of truth within him” (Rand 58). It is clear that he would never include any of the rules that were present in his past society in his new and improved one. Equality 7-2521 completely let go of his old life and refused to be held back among the masses. Equality 7-2521’s curse that was always frowned upon finally was looked at in a positive way. He is unafraid and proud, finally discovering himself and becoming his own man.
There is a power to individual thinking that forges new pathways that were not there before. Equality’s individual motivations lead him continuously in new paths and allowed him, to discover things that were about himself and in the
At the end of the story, Equality 7-2521 wants to live in a world without the rules and controls the council has set forth. Equality 7-2521 re-invents electricity, surpassing the best Scholars in his society. As well, Equality 7-2521's brilliance continues, as shown as at the end of the novel, when he’s writing philosophies on the meaning of life. The story proves that even though society is equal, human creativity creates a more diverse way of life.
Equality and Liberty met because she worked in the fields near where Equality worked as a Street Sweeper. Liberty worked in nature, and lived in the Home of the Peasants. Again, with strict government laws, Equality was not supposed to have feelings for Liberty, which he does anyways. Nature plays a big part in their relationship too, Equality describes her fields as “black and ploughed, and they lie like great fan before us, with their furrows gathered in some hand beyond the sky, spreading forth from that hand, opening wide apart as they come toward us, like black pleats that
The fiction novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, begins as equality takes a journey to individualism. He begins by writing how wrong he is to be writing what he is, how much of a sin it is. To be thinking as his own, and as an “I”. Ayn Rand is from Russia, which is a communist society. As Rand was growing up in this time frame, she had made the time to give herself an education which was frowned upon as she was a woman. She was not given a sense of “I” it was the normal thing for women to stand back and watch. To continue deeper into the book, Equality's eventual assessment of his writing on his own, changed from being a sin to being and individual activity, from the beginning to the end of the book.
Lionel Messi once said “you have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it. Equality discovered electricity in Ayn Rand’s book “Anthem”,Just like Prometheus, The god who stole fire, sacrificed a lot to show the world there discoveries. They did not fail at what they created and what they did.Although they had different outcomes equality felt a bond with prometheus, Because of how alike they were and how different they were.
Equality is motivated by himself. He wants to invent things. He’s not doing it for fame or to try to impress the council, but for himself. He’s eager to discover and he’s curious about things and how they work. He is very passionate about his experiments and puts a lot of pride and work into them. Equality is much smarter than the rest of his society as it states “It was that the learning was too easy”(21). He dreamed of being a scholar where he can put his talents to a good use;
No “I” and no “you”, just “we.” How could we live in a world like that? Ayn Rand’s book shows a twisted and different form of collectivism. Everyone is told what they have to do for the rest of their future. Children are not even allowed to know who their parents are and are never given the chance to meet them. Although, only one shines in the society that no one else may see until now. Equality finds it difficult to find individualism in his life and in the rules of his society. Equality eventually finds individualism in escaping, to a haven of his own, from his odd society. Equality can then find peace with himself and can live in a more individualistic life in his newfound house with “The Golden One” in the forbidden and
