What makes a good friendship? Friendships depend on mutual affection, respect, and trust. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men follows the story of two very different men, George and Lennie, during the Great Depression, and how they stayed together as stable farms for a short time until Lenny’s strength led to him accidentally killing the owner’s son’s wife, and his subsequent demise. No, George was not a good friend to Lennie because their relationship was not a friendship, but a symbiotic relationship stemming from economic and mental necessity. George is not a good friend to Lennie because they are together out of economic necessity. Of Mice and Men takes place during the Great Depression, and George and Lennie work together to earn wages to buy a farm, a dream that would be near impossible on just one person’s wages. George often tells Lennie of “a little place [they] can get cheap, but [the sellers] ain’t giving it away” (Steinbeck 56). By earning two wages and being fiscally responsible they can get out of the cycle of stable hand work and have a real life. George uses Lennie’s strength as a selling …show more content…
Before Lennie’s Aunt Clara died, George made a promise to “his old lady [that he’d] take care of him” (Steinbeck 22). Like Lennie wants to protect animals, George also finds satisfaction in taking care of Lennie, and that and their dream allow george to not succumb to the loneliness and isolation that plagues most of the other characters in the book. George is able to put his failings on Lennie, “if I was alone I could live so easy”, but that notion is clearly wishful thinking. With George’s social status and the economic climate, without Lennie he is doomed to the same fate as Candy, living out his days still working as a ranch hand. It becomes easier for George to ignore this however, and blame it on
As Thomas Aquinas states, “There is nothing on this earth more prized than true friendship.” Friends cheer each other up when they are sad and support them when they are happy. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers, George and Lennie, arrive as newcomers on the ranch. Throughout the story, different problems are thrown their way, and their friendship is tested with each one. George shows how true friendship requires sacrifice because friends sacrifice personal freedom, they protect each other, and they sacrifice emotional energy.
Although George traveled with Lennie throughout his life he is not able to call him a friend more than a child. Due to mental disabilities and the death of his Aunt Clara, George has taken the role of caregiver towards Lennie because he knows
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a classic late 1930’s novel about the struggles that come with friendship. It follows George Milton and Lennie Small, two drifters working from ranch to ranch, staying only long enough to collect their wage. Lennie, a mentally disabled but physically strong man, and George, a clever man who is also Lennie’s guardian and best friend, travel cross-country together, in search of jobs that will give them enough money to start their own ranch. The story begins with George explaining to Lennie that if he were to get into any trouble at their new job, to hide in a bush and that George would go find him afterwards. Lennie agrees and repeats the instructions to himself many times, making sure to remember them. He then asks George to retell how they will buy their own land and own
Losing a pet or friend is the most tragic event to suffer through as a human being. We all want to keep everybody we hold dear, but we must learn to live with their death and treasure their memories which make us love them even more. In the book, Of Mice and Men, a loss is very common; almost everybody loses something important to them. Of Mice and Men has many morals, but the moral, “You’ll never appreciate how much you love something until it is gone,” is followed by Candy, Curly, and George.
With his words, George reveal his familiar, yet new feeling about Lennie. Rather than feeling anger and frustration, he have now given up on Lennie and their dreams of one day getting a farm of their own. Additionally, George now can finally keep a job and no longer have to live a life of hiding and hardship trying to save up money for long long months. On the other hand, he would still survive if he had ran away with Lennie and find a new job together and continue to work towards their dream. However, there are times when the people we hold dear make too big of a mistake for us to continue to bail them out.
Thomas Aquinas, an Italian Dominican philosopher, once said, “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.” John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is an amazing example of this quote. The story displays a short glimpse into the life of George Milton and Lennie Small as they hustle for work in the Gabilan mountains of California. The two men truly care for each other and view each other as family, unlike other men during this time who were just searching for money. After watching their friendship progress, the reader may ask themselves, “How does their friendship render each vulnerable?”
George thinks his life would be much easier without Lennie considering he is mentally disabled but at the same time George uses Lennie’s strength and hugeness throughout the book. In the end, the two of them had a dream and to make a dream come true you have to: come up with a dream, don’t listen to people when they don’t believe in you, work towards it even when there’s setbacks. OF MICE AND MEN There were a lot of examples of friendships throughout the story, but they all ended up in a bad way they either fell apart or someone ended up getting hurt. But no matter what, on problem led to another until it was all over. George has always been there for lennie even in the worst situations like in weed, George helps Lennie escape because he was touching a girl's dress and the girl said he was trying to rape her. The guys of the town started a search party for lennie so they could lynch him.
According to Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster's online dictionaries, friendship is "the quality or state of being friends/friendly. " My personal interpretation of the word "friendship" is, as Elaf Agha stated, a relationship between two or more people. In addition to that statement, I believe a true friendship is where two or more people are genuinely friendly towards one another and don't exploit the other friend('s/s') faults. In the case of George and Lennie in Of Mice and Men, George didn't exploit Lennie's strength/lack of intelligence for his personal gain when the boss was questioning George's actions regarding pay. "I said what stake you got in this guy?
Friendships Friendship is an essential part of human life. Friendship is a bond between any multiple organisms that can't be broken. A friend is a someone to rely on and trust no matter what, through the good days, bad days, and the mediocre ones. In John Steinbeck's book "Of Mice and Men" George was there for Lennie no matter what trouble he got himself or George into. George made Lennie's problems his problems.
Friendship Of Mice And Men exhibits that friendship is having each other’s back no matter what type of situation you go through and shutting people down is not the way to obtain it. Pushing people away and keeping in your feelings makes you feel rather lonely but this is only because shutting people down does not contribute to getting a friend. Making someone an outcast due to the color of their skin is not right. A new friendship may sprout if you look past the color of a person’s skin, it does not matter if they are black, blue or green, a friendship should be made solemnly based off the person’s personality which is the only aspect that matters. The story starts off by George and Lennie showing how strong of a bond they share because
Lennie needs George for essential survival and without him, unfortunately he would not live very long. Due to Lennie's disability, he keeps on doing terrible things, because of this, he always depends upon George to ensure him and get him out of inconvenience. George keeps Lennie in great health, making beyond any doubt that what he eats and drink is good for him. “Lennie! Lennie for god sakes don't drink so much”... “I ain’t sure it’s good water”. (Steinbeck 3) This quote shows that George is telling him that the water you're wanting to drink is not pure, which shows George cares for his well-being and also playing a fatherly role. In their relationship, George does nearly all the talking to other individuals as Lennie never truly gets what is going on and isn't very savvy. When George and Lennie are talking to the boss, George tells Lennie to not say a single word because he could have possibly ruin everything. Without George, Lennie would never have any employment and would have never lived long. "But not us! An' why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why." (Steinbeck 14) Lennie may not be firm on his statement, but he still understands that friendship means sticking together, and in that case all his basic
“Nothing hurts more than being disappointed by the person you thought would never hurt you”. In the novel the main characters, George and Lennie both discover what happens when true friendship is put to the test. They discover if their friendship prevails all obstacles or if it just crashes and burns. Illustrating to the reader that George would do anything for his friend even if that means he would be included in the punishment of the crime. Proving to the reader that human nature tells can affect friendship for if humans didn't feel the urge to connect with others Lennie and George’s friendship wouldn't be as strong.
