The documents chosen to go in the learning outcome 9 part of my portfolio demonstrate my understanding and ability to adhere to the appropriate legal, financial, and ethical frameworks under which nonprofit organizations operate and are regulated. One of issues that nonprofit organizations face is the lack of awareness as to the extent that a 501 (c)(3) can lobby. For some organizations it is critical that the organization act as an advocate for its clients and lobby in order for the organization to enact its mission. The first document that I have chosen for learning outcome 9 in my portfolio is a mini essay that I wrote for NMP 600 that addresses how an organization could respond when it is told that it has no business lobbying. As a nonprofit …show more content…
I learned about more than just the law surrounding a nonprofit’s right to lobby, I learned about the different types of lobbying and how they can be perceived by the public. One issue that seems to create controversy particularly within the nonprofit sector is the idea of special interest lobbying. At some point within my career I may be in a situation in which I am asked to comment on my opinions with regards to special interest lobbying. I will be able to not just have an opinion on the topic but will be able to back my opinion up with the knowledge that I gained in the 655 course. The third document in my learning outcome nine section of my portfolio gives a brief glimpse of what I learned in regards to special interest lobbying and how it differs from any other form of …show more content…
I don’t think it is possible to take part in any form of an intensive experience and remain unchanged. The nature of the program requires a huge amount of dedication, discipline and focus. Beyond the educational components of this program I was offered the chance to look inwardly and question certain aspects of my life. This program forced me to start answering the hard questions and to face certain realities that I was previously avoiding. I learned about how I operate as a person, what things need to be in place in order for me to succeed. I think that the academic component the NMP program gave me the skills to be a good leader but beyond that the program gave me the courage to lead with confidence and that will enable me to take my learnings and enact
The nonprofit board and its governance are critical to an organization’s success. Brown (2007) stresses the need for governing boards to be informed, effective, and engaged, especially because the current environment (i.e. increasing competition for resources, etc.) demands high-quality board performance. The purpose of this paper is to examine existing literature as it relates to nonprofit board governance and performance. This analysis includes an examination of nonprofit boards’ roles, responsibilities, and functions along with a review of best practices. In addition, board roles and best practices, and their correlation to board performance is emphasized. Finally, a discussion of the practical implications of the literature as it relates to DavidsonWorks’ board ties the literature to real-world application.
The Federalist papers, published in 1787, were essays were written in response to the Anti-Federalist papers that did not support the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. James Madison's wrote Federalist #10 to argue that while interest groups are essential for liberty, they must be controlled and can only be done under a republic.
In the United States, there are more than fifty different versions of lobbying laws in states and territories. On the Federal level, lobbying is defined as being “any communication made on behalf of a client to members of Congress, congressional staffers, the president, White House staff and high-level employees of nearly 200 agencies, regarding the formulation, modification, or adoption of legislation.” Though there is much disagreement about lobbyists, there have been laws enacted to try and control them and those who abuse lobbying. There is always room for improvement with regards to lobbying laws, because there is still your classic loop holes that people use to avoid being in violation of the law.
The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater

Being in this program has caused me to experience an extreme amount of pressure to succeed in everything I do, or else I will be looked down on as failing to live up to my expectation. Ultimately, this pressure has been positive, as I am now quite good at most of the things I set out to do well, although I have had to lose nearly all of the social aspects of life that children my age typically enjoy. Overall, it could be said that my life was changed rather positively by the event described in this
Some students don’t know the purpose of lobbying or what it is used for. Almost all of the candidates in the 2016 election took money from lobbyists (except for Trump, who is a billionaire himself). APLAC students will read this book and realize exactly how big companies influence politicians. Koch Industries was able to lobby successfully and it and is described thoroughly in the book. The Koch brothers failed with their Libertarian ideas, but they can still keep them alive by giving money to politicians to influence their decisions. This is shown in the book and will be intriguing to the
Nonprofits can also legally advocate for a social justice agenda through activities that are neither political campaigning nor excessive lobbying, therefore eliminating the consequence of losing their tax exemption status. Some lobbying activities that are considered acceptable are nonpartisan analysis, in-depth study or research on a policy issues; discussions of broad social problems; responding to a written request from a legislative body; providing education materials to legislators or the public that are unbiased; meeting with a legislator to discuss social problems without referring to a particular legislative proposal; advocating for better implementation of existing laws and meeting with your representatives to discuss your program.
In April I reported on Trump shortchanging Veterans' charities by only distributing a fraction of the six-million dollars he claimed his website raised when he skipped the GOP debate in fear of facing Megyn Kelly. While researching my Veterans article, I discovered that Trump has made no charitable contributions to his own nonprofit organization- the Donald J. Trump Foundation since 2008, according to tax filings.

Nonprofit organizations broadly described operate to achieve missions that serve the common good. Graduate study in the field of nonprofit management focuses on the development of leadership skills for nonprofit managers and provides education in areas such as general operations, human resources, strategies, and fund development (Nachmias, 2008). Students of nonprofit management also develop proficiency in other matters such as nonprofit legal issues, organizational development, donor relations, financial management and fund-raising, volunteer, and human resource management, and pro-gram evaluation, to name a few competencies (Nachmias, 2008).Many nonprofit management programs have a theoretical component, and most programs rely on experiential learning as a vital element of a graduate student’s education. Future studies of community impact should include analysis components from the fields of nonprofit management education, service learning, capacity building, and nonprofit evaluation, and take into consideration specific factors that may affect study outcomes.
I agree with you that nonprofit organztion have the right to refuse to teach something. I think that children are going to get the knowledge about the world from their friends and the streets. I think that it is our jobs after the parents to educate them on the important of the basis of health life. I think that the girls should be educating on all things health so they can go into adult with the knowledge. I think it is our job to show what is out there so they can be educate on the basis so when the decide is brought up , they will be full
In the American political system, practice of lobbying has had a prodigious influence over governmental action. Lobbying groups are considered to be essential to the proper functioning of the government. National Conference of State Legislatures estimates there are more than fifty different versions of lobbying laws in states. However, they all share a fundamental theory of lobbying as an attempt of influencing governmental decision and policy. Similarly, interest group symbolize an organized group of people who shares common interest to influence governmental activities.
People are important for the success of democracy. After electing their representatives, some individuals wish to be more involved in legislative decisions that affect them, so they take to lobbying and joining interest groups. This often provides them with an atmosphere of individuals who think like they do, while also allowing them to play more of a role than just voting for a few people to represent them. Lobbying and interest groups also allow for issues to be brought to the attention of the legislature and provide a way for these groups to talk to the legislators, whether it is over dinner or at a concert. By voicing their opinions and placing pressures on the legislation, these groups have become successful in fighting for their passions and their views on important
Stakeholders play a critical role in the management and decision-making process of an organization. An example of a stakeholder includes employees, managers, patients, vendors, suppliers, the community, creditors, customers and the government (Daft, 2013). Also, Daft (2013) says, “Stakeholders are groups “within or outside of the organization that has a stake in the organization’s performance” (p. 23). There are a few differences surrounding stakeholder expectations between non-profit and for-profit organizations. The differences in nonprofit organizations and for-profit business organizations are the direction of activities for the end goal (Daft, 2013). Although it is very difficult to measure the impact that a nonprofit has on society, community, or a particular group as opposed to evaluating an income statement from a for-pro-profit organization. The same level of attention should be paid to stakeholder for nonprofit organizations as stakeholders of for-profit organizations.
