The Role Of Women During The Chinese Society

The role of women in the family in traditional China was one of subservience and deference to men. Women were thought more of as property rather than important members of the family unit. Their main purpose was to serve and be pleasing to their husbands, fathers and even brothers regardless of how it affected them. They lived under the dictate of their parents until they were married and once married lived under the rule of their husbands. They had few rights and were not allowed to own property. Their role in the family was a marginal one and revolved around servitude (Johnson, 1983). Early Chinese society placed a strong focus on the male members of the family. Sons were favored over daughters. Husbands were the masters of the home and were to be deferred to. Women were required to be submissive to the males, even their sons. All classes of women were expected to live by this way of life. There were various customs, which would be considered barbaric in today’s world, which women in China had to endure. These traditions and the apparent disregard of the obvious downsides shows one how little women were regarded during these times. One such custom these women were subjected to was foot binding also known as the practice of the Lotus Feet which was common place in China.
