“You brought us back to life. You did something I thought no one could do. Don’t be afraid. I won’t shut it up again.” This was a quote from a scene at the end of the movie The Secret Garden. During this scene, Lord Craven was referring to the garden that was shut up and hidden until Mary came in and brought it back to life. Symbolically, he was referring to emotions being shut up. This quote hints the theme of The Secret Garden, which is that inside the darkness, there is light. You just have to open your heart and let people in to get there. Mary Lennox, Lord Craven, Colin Craven, and Mrs. Medlock all had to learn this lesson.
The protagonist, Mary Lennox, had to learn the theme the most. To begin, “I was angry. I never cried. I didn’t know how to cry.” Mary said this quote before her parents died and before she learned the theme. This quote shows how Mary had her emotions locked inside her at the beginning of the movie. In addition, “I’ve never had any friends.” Mary says this when she was talking to Ben the gardener, and it shows how she shut herself out from people. Lastly, “See, you have to pull the weeds to give the flowers room.” Dickon says this to Mary and it shows how Mary stopped shutting herself out so she could grow as a person. So, Mary had to stop shutting out people and hiding her emotions to open her heart.
Lord Craven needed to learn the theme the second most. First of all, “No one’s been inside that place for ten years.” This was said by Ben, referring
Inherited money is held in much higher esteem than earned money in Savannah, Georgia. This is a theme seen throughout Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, John Berendt's non-fictional account of life in Savannah. Characters such as Jim Williams, who worked for their money and brought themselves up the social ladder, are seen as being beneath those who inherited their money, such as Lee Adler. The old wealth tend to look down on anyone who wasn't born with their money. Their views of just about everything, including laws and punishments, differ depending on whether the person in question is of wealth due to blood or sweat.
Throughout the story the author shows that Freddie, the main character, is self-absorbed which is his main personality trait and this helps to create the theme. For example, the narrator writes, “Freddie thought back over the past weeks. She was right. He’d never once asked her a question about her life or her mother” (Ryan 24). This example proves that Freddie is self-absorbed and only thinking about his own feelings because he had been spending time with Amy every single days for the entire summer and had never once thought of her feelings or what was happening in her life outside of the bakery. This
At the beginning of the book, there is a part that starts the story and how it affects them later in their lives. When Raina races against her friends to go home, she trips and knocks out her two front teeth. This shows me the theme of how all things, and even things that are meant to be fun or enjoyable may have some weird/terrible consequences. It also shows us how the relationship between her and her friends in another scene in the beginning of the story is that I saw for the theme friendship was when Raina came back to school the day after her teeth were knocked out and people were wondering how was her and if she was okay. Then more people come over and then they ask her if she saw the blood and how much blood there was and if Raina cried. This shows that her friends do not care for her as much and would rather hear Raina’s story from a different side than her own. A theme that seems great for the both scenes that work together is most people
Over the Garden Wall is a children’s cartoon series with a rather dark subject: a visit to the afterlife. The show focuses on two brothers, Wirt and Greg. Unaware of their true plight, Wirt and Greg navigate their way through unfamiliar territory in search of a way home, and meet other unusual characters along the way. The show resembles Dante’s own trip to the afterlife in many ways. Over the Garden Wall alludes to Dante’s Commedia through its settings, the characters, and the aspects that the two versions of the afterlife share, all of which implies that the series is based loosely on Dante’s travels in his Commedia.
In Unfriended, the author starts to present the theme to the reader, when the main character is in a tough situation. “That whole oh I care so much stuff. Just to make everyone like her. She is just trying to fit in with “the girls” when its not working because she is one of us. Who does she think she is?” (Vail 43).
The theme of the story is under some circumstances people can be blind to the truth. Character Edie determines the style of the story by talking about the circumstances of her life as a fifteen year old girl and as an older woman. She retells the stories of those that she has known, and the man that she believed she loved deeply. Sometimes the things we want to happen may not be the things that life has for us. We need to be open to all the opportunities in life that are different from what we believe.
Over time in the book Mattie is very strong if I was her I wouldn't know what to do. One time in the book Mattie gets diagnosed with fever and she survives! She was so close to death. "Oh, my, now that's looking better isn't it? You've beat the Grin Reaper, you have, lassie" Mrs flag says to Mattie when she wakes up from the fever. She was so close to death but she kept fighting. But she isn't done yet. Another time in the story where Mattie showed us the theme was when Mattie was all alone but she went out and tried to find someone to help her. This relates to the theme because Mattie could of just stayed at the coffeehouse but instead she knew she could find someone who would help. The last example I have is when Mattie has to decide what to do with the coffeehouse. She could decide to keep it or she could sell it. Everybody was telling her to sell it but she kept it. She could of said I don't want to decide and Eliza would've sold it but she decide to kept and to have Eliza as a partner. All these examples are explain how the theme is true. But these were three examples were three of many.
In the beginning, there are historical events happening in this story that directly impact the mood of the characters. An example of this would be a direct quote from Mr Frank that says “ The news of the war was good. The British and Americans were sweeping
Jeannette Walls, the author of The Glass Castle, integrates multiple themes to capture the conflict she experienced during her troubled childhood. It takes us along with Jeannette trying to overcome some of her most troubling childhood memories; memories such as her father teaching her how to swim, her mother condoning Jeanette’s uncle’s inappropriate treatment of her daughter, and Rex’s recurring outbursts, shapes Jeannette and her siblings. Jeannette focuses on themes such parents must be responsible and negligence leads to more problems, which we focused on in our trailer to accurately represent her memoir.
In conclusion, the three most important themes to me in the story, abuse, fear, and karma are what made the story so good. He abuses her, she has fear, that he pokes fun at, and he is punished for his actions. Her greatest fear saved her from enduring anymore abuse from
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Guerilla Gardener video, and what Ron Finley discussed. I have always been a sucker for healthy eating and producing my own food, so being able to hear his ideas had kept me interested throughout the entire video.
John Berendt’s novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil follows a New York native reporter as he investigates in Savannah. The story tells us, the readers, how the people living in Savannah deal with a murder case between a well-known man and a well-known hustler. The book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil shows the reader the various speakers, the impersonal tone, and the occasion of the trial.
To begin with, one major theme that continuously played a part throughout the entire book is desire. To many of the characters, it was the one urge that they could never overcome. One
Archibald craven is a big part of the secret garden. When he and his wife first got married they started the garden together and spent a lot of their time in the garden but one day his wife was sitting on a tree branch in the garden and it gave way and she fell and was left very poorly and injured. She was injured so bad she ended up passing away. Her death crushed Mr. Craven and made him angry, bitter and depressed that in turn led him to lock up the garden and forbid anyone to ever go in it.
The author from The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger utilizes motifs loneliness and depression to show how Holden a teenager from the book explains the struggles he had during the great depression. J.D. Salinger uses the motifs of loneliness and depression to illustrate the theme that when people feel lonely they try to connect with people to get rid of it.
