The Sexuality of Pablo Picasso Essay

Picasso painted for himself, as a release from the pressures of his society and as a way to express his thoughts and problems in tangible form. For this reason, the events happening around the time of any Picasso work must be understood before the true meaning of any resulting art can be understood.

Steinberg’s essay, “The Philosophical Brothel,” of 1972 was a new account of Picasso’s masterwork, Les Demoiselles d’Avignion [Fig. 13]. Steinberg roots his analysis of the painting in its relationship to the viewer. Steinberg extends the role of the viewer until it is he who completes the painting as the male solicitor of the women in the painting: “The picture is a tidal wave of female aggression; one either experiences the Demoiselles as an onslaught, or shuts it off. But the assault on the viewer is only half of the action, for the viewer, as the painting conceives him on this side of the picture plane, repays in kind.”98 The horizontality of the flatbed picture plane, and the new content it allows, makes the viewer’s role an active

Pablo Picasso arrived in Paris in the year 1900 at the age of just 19, and within a few years he became a well-known artist and a dominating figure in the world of modern art movement. The one piece of art that he produced in 1906 through 1907 was the Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and would change the word of art forever. This became the piece art that helped launch Cubism and a whole new artistic expression. Because of this art and many other, Pablo Picasso has become one of the most important figure of 20th century, in terms of art, and art movements that occurred over this period. This Spanish born artist had a distinct style and eye for artistic creation. There had been no other artists, prior to Picasso, who had such an impact on the art world. The painting shows five women naked with flat figures, disintegrated planes and faces, inspired by African masks. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in goodwill of a level two-dimensional picture of a plane.

Women artists faced many prejudices in the art world. From being allowed only in some art academies to creating positive depictions of women in their art outside of the male gaze, women artists all reacted differently to the goal of representation. Depictions of women in artwork, especially by men, tended to be highly sexualized images, often objectifying the female body through nudity and scandalous positions. In the 1920’s, women began fighting for their rights more tenaciously with the continued pressure by The Suffragettes, an organized women’s group that advocated for a women’s right to vote founded in 1909. The group advocated more fiercely in the interwar period, demonstrating the feminist and more outspoken views of women at the time. Women were ready to take a stand.

As Pablo Picasso once said, “Painting is a blind man’s profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.” Picasso’s passion for art started at a young age, getting his passion for art from his father. Pablo Picasso is known for the innovative techniques he introduced to the art world. Each being influenced from his life around him, to modifications in the colors he utilized, or transitioning to an unorthodox style of painting, and even practicing printmaking.

There are very few things that appreciate with time. Many people love to bank on a rookie baseball player, in hopes his card will be worth thousands. Many invest in land, praying they hit a gold mine like land in Frisco or Prosper, Texas. One of these rare items is art. Art is a luxury, that many high income people love to invest in. Pablo Picasso’s art is some of the most if not the most prominent, pieces of artwork in the world. Picasso was a trendsetter of sorts, helping start many movements including introducing the idea of a collage in his later paintings. Picasso had a habit of drawing his lovers in his paintings. For some of his mistresses, he created lots of art with them as the main subjects of the paintings, as those were the stronger influences. Many of his paintings were centered around one of his mistresses, Marie-Therese Walter. Picasso met the 17-year-old Walter while he was married to his wife, Olga Khokhlova. Throughout their relationship, which spanned nine years, she was the centerpiece of his work. Depending on the depiction of the subject, Picasso showed his emotion toward Walter. The painting, ‘Seated Woman’ of Walter by Picasso portrays a unique style, a powerful use of colors, and a different view of Walter in comparison to paintings of his other mistresses.

His full name though is actually: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso. His signature is worth more than some of his paintings. In fact in some restaurants he just drew a quick face and then signed it (when he was famous). He was one of the most well known people in the 20th century. He was born in 25th of October 1881 in Malaga, Spain, and then died on the 8th of April 1973 Mougins, France. He was a: painter, drawing, sculpture, print making, and ceramics.

While he already had a considerable following by the middle of 1906, Picasso enjoyed further success with his paintings of massive over-sized nude women, monumental sculptural figures that recalled the work of Paul Gauguin and showed his interest in primitive (African, Micronesian, Native American) art. He began exhibiting his work in the galleries of Berthe Weill (1865–1951) and Ambroise Vollard, (1866–1939) quickly gaining a growing reputation and a following amongst the artistic community of Montparnasse.

Picasso was born on October 25 1881, Nationality: Spanish and the movement of his artwork were Cubism, and Surrealism. Art is an artist’s individual interpretation of the subject. Female nude is a piece of art which makes the viewer think what is the artist trying to express by his painting. I was really confused at first when I looked at the art work and it took me a while to figure out what the art really means to its viewer. In general, the visual elements present in the art work like color, shape, lines, curves, and the subject itself are most remarkable visual features. While viewing this piece of art one thing you will notice is the color shade and the sharpen lines of the artwork attracts the viewers and hold you up for a while. Deep color combination of the background and the bright color frame work makes the piece look more vivid and attractive. I am still not quite sure about what is the artist trying to express from this painting but all in all I really liked this piece of

The reclining nude figure seemingly leaps forward ahead of the deep red, blue, and green background. Her curvaceous form exaggerated with each stroke, highlighted with strong black outlines. Femme Couchée defined above all by the drawn line, the curvilinear contours that rivet our attention. His is best known for his colorful palette and serene imagery to represent the vibrate personalities and captured the zealots zest for life of his muses

The piece I chose is Pablo Picasso’s “Nude combing her hair”. I first saw it at the Kimbell Art Museum and remember admiring it. It was finished in 1906 and is oil paint on canvas. The main (only) figure in this painting is a nude woman, standing, who appears to be combing through her hair with her fingers after bathing. Although abstract, Picasso creates a very elegant, raw, and naturalistic form using color, space, and his depiction of figure.
