In the stories “Ambushed” by Tim O’ Brien, “The Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty each story has similar and differences in the conflicts, characters and the setting. Every character has similar backgrounds leading to different conflicts. In each story they all use guns to kill their enemy but in each story their conflicts are completely different and cause them to have different prospective on what they do to survive. In “The Dangerous Game” the main character Rainford was going to hunt when he fell off his boat and found himself on Ship-Trap Island where his conflict begins and he is forced to learn how to survive on his own or else he would either die or become trapped there. “Sailors have a dread of that place, I don’t know why. Some superstition” In “The Sniper” a republican sniper made the mistake of lighting a cigarette while on duty and was spotted by his enemy who began to shoot at him. The sniper was instantly put in a life or death situation where he was forced to fight for his life. “Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck a match, inhaled smoke hurriedly and put out the light. Almost immediately a bullet flattened itself against the parapet of the roof.” In the story “Ambushed” the main character was a sniper on duty who came a crossed a man in the frog in front of him who was his enemy. Without thinking and just doing it out of routine, he set off a grenade and killed him “Kiowa tried to tell me that the man
An author’s main goal is to have the reader intrigued by the text with suspenseful and/or dramatic scenes happening throughout the story. The authors of all three stories (“The Sniper”, “Ambush”, and “The Trip”) all portray this expectation flawlessly. Even though the stories have a great chronological order with amazing characters, they also share similar themes and subjects. The following reasons explain why.
“The world is made up of two classes - the hunters and the huntees.” In the short story ‘The Most Dangerous Game’ which was written by Richard Connell there are two main characters, Rainsford and General Zaroff. Rainsford thought that General Zaroff wanted to hunt with him when in all reality General Zaroff wanted to hunt him(Rainsford) himself. Richard Connell uses irony, theme and characterization to develop the plot and characters. The use of these literary devices suggests that Connell wanted to make the story more interesting and suspenseful so the reader can enjoy reading it.
A similar theme was developed between The Sniper and Ambush. The Sniper’s theme is Stay Focused, What has happened… Happened. Ambush’s theme is Don’t Dwell on the Past.
“The Sniper” and “The Most Dangerous” Game are both different stories, written by different authors. Liam O’Flaherty is the author of “The Sniper”. He was born on one of Ireland’s Aran Islands, in a large family. Since the Aran Islands have a tradition of oral storytelling, Liam O’Flaherty’s house was full of different kinds of stories. He also wrote about Irish peasant life and captured the struggles of the Irish Civil War. His best known novel is “The Informal”, and it talks about a betrayal set during the Irish Troubles.
The Sniper, written by Liam O’Flaherty, is a story about a Republican sniper in the Irish civil war in 1922. This story tells of a night spent on a roof looking for the enemy, the Free-Staters. In this short description of the nights events, the sniper kills 3 people; a soldier, an informer, and finally an enemy sniper on the roof across the road from him. In the end this enemy sniper turns out to be the republicans brother. This story shows the the specific characteristics a sniper must have to carry out their duty. A key moment in this text which influenced the sniper is the Civil war itself.
Characters in ¡§The Sniper¡¨ are limited in terms of type and variety to show that war brings out only people who possesses a passion to kill and have the courage to be killed. The story focuses on only one sniper and we, the readers use the incident from his point of view. The only characters that are mentioned are the sniper, another sniper, his enemy and an old woman. Apart from the old woman, all other characters are men who represent figures of war and are present to do nothing but kill. They are seekers of death and bring about a web of deaths. The manner in which these men ¡§reign¡¨ over the city by killing, and that ordinary dwellers are imprisoned within their homes for fear of death shows the evil impacts of war.
“The American Sniper” by Chris Kyle is an account of the deadliest American sniper ever, called “the devil” by the enemies he hunted and “the legend” by his Navy SEAL brothers. From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyle's kills (the previous American record was 109). Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Kyle presents the gripping and unforgettable accounts of
Adversity is when people have to overcome a problem even though it might be hard for them to do. Overcoming a problem can make people stressed out or nervous that they are doing something wrong. Liam O’Flaherty made The Sniper from “The Sniper” face many hard times throughout the story. While The Sniper was protecting himself from danger, Richard Connell made Rainsford from “The Most Dangerous Game” run from his own game. The Sniper faced adversity by being in the military and making the decision to kill people who were after him. Rainsford faced a problem when a psycho man would not let him leave the island until he made it 3 days without getting hunted. People need to
The characters in the stories all forced problems. The characters were fearless, they forced being hunted, leaving their home. They were forced to do thing they didn’t want to. The characters in Harrison Bergeron was Harrison, in The most dangerous game Is Rainsford and Zarff, and in The Sniper the character was the sniper.
Copious bullets, like that of torrential downpour, reign over the battlefield; a setting in which man created through dispute, engulfs each and every individual caught within it. Some are immediately spun into a downward spiral, while with others, it hits them in the midst -- even if they have built an immunity to war’s ways. Two fictional characters, both sharing a similar atmosphere, experience the true affects to war in their own ways. Although war never changes, the individuals do, no matter the situation. This is exemplified through the fictional tales, told by Liam O’Flaherty’s “The Sniper,” as well as Tim O’Brien’s “Where Have You Gone Charming Billy,” and as the main characters are to each their own story, they bear contradistinction to one another in the aspect of war, personality, and the emotional reactions to war.
Adversity is the struggles people face in life. Adversity can be hard. It affects people in many different ways. Some people give up when adversity comes there way and some people take it head on. In the short stories there were many different kinds of adversity. “The Most Dangerous Game” was written by Richard Connell and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty. In “The Sniper” the character faces adversity, because he is in a war. And he faces this problem with another armsman and he ended up killing his brother. This was bad and a rough thing to face, because he killed someone he really cared about. But he was affected in a positive way, because he swore never to pick up a gun again after that. In “The Most Dangerous Game” The character
The story The Sniper takes place during the civil war in Dublin, where a single sniper waits on a roof top to eliminate any threat from the oposing forces. This story is very tense right from the begining as soon as he noticed the enemys watching him and a bullet comes close to hitting him. This story's opening is one that catches your attention and gets you really focussed on the story. The Most Dangerous Game on the other hand starts out with a reputed hunter falls off the yacht he was on and ends up on an unfamiliar island. In which he finds General Zaroff only then does the good part of the story begin, yes the start of this story was a bit
Wars often cause unforgettable losses and can lead to endless pain. The stories, The Sniper by Liam O'Flaherty and The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, both end with unbearable travesties. Both stories portray brotherhood and regret while the main characters fight very different battles.
In the short story “The Sniper”, by Liam O’Flaherty, a gun battle is shown between two snipers on opposite sides of a war. The republican sniper, the protagonist, cleverly tricks the other sniper to believe that he is dead and then, he himself shoots the other sniper and kills him. The sniper is curious to know the identity of the fallen sniper, and turns over the dead man and finds his “brother’s face”. The republican sniper is a protagonist that is least effective, due to poor characterization, more background on this protagonist or descriptions of the protagonist that the audience could relate to could help characterize him better. But this characterization brought mystery and suspense to the storyline which impacted the way we perceived
Two brave men who have bought the enemies and persevered the horror that laid ahead of them. “The Sniper” a short story by Liam O’Flaherty, takes place during the irish civil war. A trained sniper is given a mission to kill. Where as Private first class paul berlin the protagonist in “Where have you gone charming Billy” by Tim O'Brien, he is a young soldier drafted and sent off to fight in the vietnam war where he must face inner struggles and the violence during the 1960s. Though they both are two different people, the two protagonists have similarities and differences in their own unique ways.
