The Stereotypical Hero

Decent Essays

On september 11th, 2001 two planes crashed into the twin towers. Many firefighters and police helped people deal with the devastating tragedy. These people are considered heroes because they put themselves at risk to help others. A hero is self-less, they put others before themselves. A hero does what they believe is morally right. The stereotypical hero has not changed much over time.
The idea of a hero is to be humble and put others before themselves. Beowulf crosses the sea and kills 9 monsters. “What man, anywhere under Heaven's high arch, has fought in such darkness, endured more misery, or been harder pressed? Yet I survived the sea, smashed the monsters’ hot jaws, swam home from my journey.” (pg. 30) In the quote Beowulf is saying that …show more content…

For example, in the story Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain does what is morally right by keeping his word. Sir Gawain accepted the Green Knight’s challenge so the the king would not have to. A year later when they met again to finish the challenge the Knight was only testing him to prove he was worthy by testing his honesty and bravery. 60 “it grinds, I think, for me - a blade prepared I must blow I must take as my right! God’s will be done! But here! He may well his knight, but still, no use in fear; I won’t fall dead of fright.” In this quote Sir Gawain is saying that it is his job as a knight to accept this challenge so that the king will not have to endure this challenge. Although he is scared he will not back down from the challenge because of his fear. One can see that the modern day hero is not different from a hero in Beowulf's time for example, on September 29th 2016 a 30 year old volunteer firefighter tackled the teen shooter and held him there until the authorities arrived and put him in custody. “So many heroic efforts were displayed. To the initial teachers and nurse Angie, to Firefighter Brock for your selflessness in detaining the shooter, to the first in team in of responders from Townville VFD, Fork Rescue Squad, Oconee Fire, and Oconee EMS. Thank you.” - Townville Fire Department. This Example shows that the firefighter did what he thought was right, he didn't have to detain the shooter, or even stop at the school when they found his truck. The firefighter knew that stopping the shooter was the right thing to do. Another example of a modern day hero is a bus driver from northern California. On June 7th 2015, this bus driver heard about an abduction of 3-year-old on the news. Later that day Tim Watson was doing his job as normal when he realized a child that matched the description of the abducted child. Tim thought of a plan to get the child to authorities, the kidnapper was arrested and brought into
