The Success of Taiwanese Immigrants

In China, since the reform and opening-up, there have been two waves of immigration in the last century late 70s and early 90s. With the advent of a new century, China’s economy has come into the phase of rapid development and its informatization construction has been developed at a high speed. Surprisingly, at that time, there is growing the third emigration which is a larger scale one. Among these immigrants, the professional elite and the proportion of affluent people increases year by year.

Less than ten percent of Hawaii’s population is true, native, pureblooded Hawaiian. The influx of immigrants came as an reaction to find work for the sugar fields. What this novel does not touch on is the harsh levels of discrimination that some Asian-American families faced during the 20th centuries, some people telling at them to go back to Vietnam, Korea, or wherever they came from, some refusing service, perhaps throwing them out for being different, similarly to how African-Americans were treated during that time, and similar to how some Muslims are being treated today. However, more insidious than moments of outright hostility, and maybe more powerful, are the constant weak reminders that you’re different, that you’re not one of them. America is known as a “melting pot”, a multicultural country that welcomes and is home to an array of every ethnic and cultural background imaginable. Push factors are factors that repel migrants from their country. And pull factors are factors that attract migrants to move. The opportunities of racial minorities such as the Chinese or African Americans different from those of European immigrants because diversity played a big role in the quality of urban setting. In 1880, the Hayes Administration authorized a well known U.S. diplomat named James B. Angell. His job was to negotiate and control a new treaty they were planning with China. The treaty was called the Angell Treaty, which permitted the United States to restrict or prohibit Chinese immigration. In 1882, the Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which eliminated the process of immigration of any Chinese laborers, whether it were skilled workers or unskilled workers for 10 years. The Act also required every Chinese person going on a voyage in or out of the country to carry a certificate identifying his or her occupation as a laborer, scholar, diplomat, or merchant. The United States is a nation built on a strong foundation of immigrants. People have come to America from many parts of the world, for a variety of reasons. Some have been pushed out of their homeland because of poverty and oppresion. Others have been pulled towards a new life in America, due to opportunities to improve their future. In 1840-1950 Swedish Immigrants were pushed out of their country or wanted to leave because of the way things were there.

Being raised in Taiwan and moved to the U.S. at age 14, I experienced two countries with different cultures and languages, and developed a well-rounded personality.
